Subject: Interesting. Thanks for the insights. It seems to me that the two things that would make a top candidate hesitate to take the UVA job are that the school has only intermittently been "flexible" with admitting student-athletes(UVA has high academic standards-the new coach would need guarantees here) and Gillen was highly regarded when he was hired there and couldn't get it done. What Gillen lacked when he arrived were strong recruiting contacts in the South/Southeast. But it looks like UVA is prepared to open the checkbook wide, plus will have a new arena if they can kickstart fundraising, so that will help.
In reply to: TNRam 's message, "It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone at SC that Odom would have an interest in the UVA job. He was Terry Holland's top assistant at UVA in the late 80s. Holland advocated that Odom replace him there as head coach, but when UVA opened up the search Odom took the Wake Forest job. The current SC AD, Mike Magee, is stepping down in June. Heard Steve Weisman, sports writer for The State (Columbia, SC's newspaper) talk about the situation last night, and his take is that Odom is a second-tier choice for UVA. UVA is seeking a "big name" coach to re-energize the UVA fan base and help fill its new arena. Weisman thinks, however, that if UVA can't get that higher-profile coach, it will pick Odom. One other point he mentioned was that the initial reaction to the Washington Post article from fans on the UVA message board re Odom's possible hiring was largely negative. Makes you wonder if someone at UVA floated out a trial balloon to the Post to gauge what fan reaction would be." on Wed April 06, 2005 08:58:04
