Subject: Annual Dinner

The Annual Dinner at the Waldorf was resounding success. Father McShane has proved to be a worthy successor to the great Father O'Hare. I was lucky to have a few words with John Bach, FC 48, who was a great Fordham player and a Boston Celtic then our coach and athletic director. Coach Bach who spent a few years in the Navy during the War before finishing his studies is a class act and still at over 80 a stunning physical presence. He pointed out that it was he who recruited Charlie Yelverton, Jack Burik and Billy Mainor, the heart of our great 1971 team. He said that he never wanted to leave Fordham but when Brooklyn Prep's Joe Paterno called from Penn State with an offer to more than double his then $13,500 salary, he couldn't refuse given the 5 children he had at home. John was with his old player John Anderaise, the Knick announcer and restauranteur Buzzy O'Keefe of River Cafe and Water Club fame. It was also great to see Giants owner Wellington Mara. It was a great night and the remarks by Charles Osgood who has a son at Fordham now and a daughter who is an alumnae, and Countrywide Finance founder Angelo Mozzillo, were compelling and humourous. Surprisingly, Coach Bach said that St. Simon Stocks'Danny Lyons was a more talented player than his teammate Ed Conlin.
