• I don't think too many have questioned Knight's ability to coach. He remains one of the best game coaches in the country. But you can't compare DW yelling at players with Knight's often inexcusable behavior.   • I think "often inexcusable" may be a bit harsh. Other than the salad bar incident, Knight has been a model citizen at Texas Tech. I think certain actions by DW could be compared to Knight (ie Lappas incident) but I don't think thats necessarily a bad thing. They're both firey guys which who hate to lose and I like that. • I find it hard to believe Bob Knight would get such strong support on a board like this. The man can coach and he does stress academics, but his method of achieving his goals exemplifies much of what is wrong with the glorification of coaches. His documented abusive behavior toward players and his unwillingness to follow a standard university code of conduct make him a liability at any school. He is the height of arrogance in that he demands respect from his players but refuses to show the same toward students or university officials. He sets the rules but does not feel the need to follow them.     • Not sure why you make this secondary point as it distracts from the issue raised by the poster, that of whether you think Knight is a coach to be admired and emulated. But in answer to your point, you have to consider it strong support when a coach with no connection to Fordham is praised on our board and then other posters support that opinion.         • I don’t see the wisdom of pursuing a pointless argument over how strong the support for Knight is on this board, not too complicated. On to the main issue, IMHO College Basketball and College Sports in general need less people who under the guise of building character verbally or physically abuse their players. I know there is no shortage of people who would attest to the virtue of Knights approach but there are an equal or greater number of people who having experienced those methods object to them. Many of us contributing to this board have played or coached competitively and know there are many ways to bring the best out of young athletes. I cannot speak for everyone but I do believe some of the methods Knight employs are detrimental to the very goal he aspires. We need fewer Knights in coaching at every level. The great thing about college sports is that you have a choice in where you go and therefore in who you play for. If a kid does not like Coach Knight's style, he can go elsewhere. • While the Bulldogs narrowly lost today, Gonzaga's Mark Few is quite the presence and role model for today's college basketball coaching--in his accomplishments on the court, his recruiting and his adding to the prestige and accomplishments of the institution he represents. Hope Fordham's future will be as bright as Gonzaga's accomplishments have been in the last decade. Congratulations DW and Fordham Rams on a successful season and good luck in the seasons to come!
