Subject: To turn down the NIT is bunk. Obviously not all the best teams make the NCAA field due to the automatic bid. It is still a high caliber tournament. Sitting it out is tantamount to sulking and projects a poor image for their program. If your team has a chance to play basketball you play, simple as that. I went to the Rutgers/Michigan semi last year and it was an excellent game. I even got to watch Frank hand out awards to top it off.
In reply to: RamRunner12 's message, "As a fan, I might be disappointed, but the NIT has obviously fallen in prestige over the years. I don't think declining an invite is an altogether bad thing, because such a move sends a message as to what expectations you have for your team: to play for a national championship each year and a refusal to accept less. However, in certain circumstances, I think the NIT can be extremely beneficial. How much would a bid have helped a young team like ours, offering postseason experience and competition against quality opponents? And the NIT can be used as a stepping stone as in the recent case of GW. Again, I don't think declining is a bad move: it really just depends on the status of your program." on Tue March 15, 2005 12:23:26
