Subject: Still Dune is a future if only a fantastic future.

The relationships between the characters in the Jihad could never happen because the space flight is impossible. There could be no empire wide religion because the space flight isn't possible. yes the fantasy is unreal and will never be real, but you can't have the fantasy if the science supporting it is crap. when your dealing with a story like LOTR's where magic is possible, you can concieve of anything and make it fit just by using magic to describe why it happened. But when your dealing with humanities future(not frodo's future) you have to follow the rules or at least speculate on something that could in theary, actually be. Can you prove that we will never be able to predict the future? Time travel has never been been proved false. How do you explain the empathy between twins? The mind is a crazy thing. Also, energy is everywhere. we are just inefficient at harnessing it at the moment. Antimatter could hold the key. Or something that we haven't even thought of could be the answer. Why is a transporter like on Star trek difficult to percieve? All we need is a computer strong enough to remeber our image and then reconstruct it.

But space flight like in the Jihad is an absolute embarrasment to Dune. Star Wars is a fun ride but it is no where near as complex and wasn't meant to be. I equate Dune with Hamlet. Fiction, but serious fiction. Star wars is no better than the parady that was made from it.

Ender's game has very good theorytical science, even if it is out there so to speak. The latter books get a little mythical and spiritual but all in all, good science.

As a matter of fact, most self respecting science fiction writers try to base there stuff on theory at least, if not on fact.
