I'm disgusted with Bush and the Powers That Be...but not surprised they let us down. He's consistently shown his priorities are in furthering the fortunes of his rich cronies rather than what's good for America or the world.

But yes, we knew this was going to be a disaster of epidemic proportions. No excuse for not preparing better AND responding more quickly. If the majority of the people left behind weren't poor and black, they wouldn't've been the majority of people left behind.

On the other hand, it's hard not to feel appalled by the looting and violence going on. Stealing food or water in desperation to feed oneself or one's family is one thing, but raping and shooting are inexcusable. Some of the places in Southeast Asia where the tsunami hit were poor too, but there wasn't this widespread violence....at least not that we heard about.

I also happen to believe we should really think about continually rebuilding in areas which are disaster-prone. A city which only exists due to levees and pumps is not wise...it's going against Mother Nature and only a matter of time till tragedy hits. (And I'm not picking on this area because of the poverty either. I feel the same way about rebuilding million-dollar homes on California hillsides that just washed away in landslides every time there's a hard rain.)
