The primary concern about putting the rope tow back into
service was coming up with a good safety interlock for it.
Orginally, the motor was simply switched on and off with a
knife switch breaker box. That was fine for attended operation
where the attendant could switch it off if there was trouble.
But we wanted it safe for unattended operation and concern was
that if someone got stuck to the rope, they could be dragged
up into the capstan and seriously injured. So Mike rigged up
a "gate" which was simply an AC line cord with male/female
plug combo in the middle of two poles set in front the enclosure where the rope entered. Mike rigged a 3 pole contactor box to key the voltage to winch motor and looped
the 110V AC control voltage through the line cord "gate."
Anyone who got stuck to the rope and was being dragged up
towards the winch enclosure would pull the line cord apart
removing the 110V AC from the contactor and shutting the
winch motor down. It was a fairly simple, yet clever way
of making the rope tow safe.
