I don't think it was supposed to be holy water...there was no "acid burning" of the skin like they used to visualize that.

What about strangeling? In some scenes on Buffy, vampires "can be strangled", meaning it really really bothers them, coughing and all. On Angel's "Are you now or have you ever been", Angel is hanged and after faking it for the attackers, releases himself. Yet it never really seemed to bother him that much.

Strangeling a vampire seems kinda pointless to me assuming the "no-breath" theory.
