Is anything ever conclusively proven in the Buffyverse? I assumed the fact that he didn't store them safely was just another instance of Spike's incompetence. He was always hatching these grand schemes (St Vigeous (sp?) Day, the Gem of Amara, the Yoko Factor, etc) which he was never able to pull off. As for this friend, just who might this be? Spike, to my knowledge, had no friends. He had been killing his own kind for two years - his reputation in the demon community was not exactly sterling. And just how dumb would a demon have to be to trust Spike with an integral part of any plan?
All that aside, I will have to rewatch the episode to see if maybe I was misled. It is my least favorite episodes of season 6 as I found Riley hard to take to begin with but Riley with an even more insufferable wive was sheer torture. I was also sad to see Buffy break up with Spike as it meant no more Bronze balcony scenes (I must be a bit of a pervert as I found that scene extremely aah - interesting).
