Maybe when the creators of the breed said that a Boerboel should be able to catch a hare or kill a leopard, they were exagerrating? Unless the hare or leopard were already half dead.

The only dogs that I've heard of that are completely void of any drive are the ones in 3rd world countries that are being raised and sold as food. When I say "drivey" or when you say "desire and eagerness to work", I mean and I assume you mean the same level or close to the same level of drive that you would see in a good GSD or Mal. One that runs to you on a recall and jumps to your side on a foos rather than one that comes at his own pace and very slow to react. I don't see how this could be expected of a breed like the current Boerboel (a large mastiff type dog) and that is why I keep asking what the working purpose or desired working purpose of this breed would be. Where would it excel where other breeds can't? Or better yet, what breed can the BB compete with in terms of working ability?

Eg. the GSD and Mal. Most would agree that the Mal can typically perform better at personal protection than the GSD, but many GSD's can still perform just as well.

Whether the BB of the past was a different type of dog (smaller, lankier, more drive, etc.) or not, does not matter. We are dealing with the Boerboel of the present and the typical BB of the present does not look or act like this type of dog, IMO.

Don't get me wrong, on one hand I would personally like to be wrong on this but on the other hand I know that if my BB had the same type of drive as my 70 lb. GSD has, the typcial pet owner would be in trouble and therefore the BSL laws could follow.

JMO,
Dan G.
