Subject: Why is CCSU not trying to build an on campus arena as well?
With the amount of students that go to CCSU, it'd seem IDEAL for this school to upgrade it's sports facilities substantially, no? ESPECIALLY for basketball... AT LEAST have a sports complex built with a basketball arena to fit 8,000 to 10,000 fans)... It just seems to make sense to me... You can then upgrade the football stadium to see in upwards of 15,000... I saw the football field... from afar... To me, it'd make a ton of sense... This is a state university that has the potential to somewhat rival UCONN(CCSU could be a perfect down the road for the A-10 in both basketball and football, which ain't a bad gig) in the future... enough students go there to do so... my two cents...

Back to reality! CCSU has plans to build a 6-8K on campus multi-purpose fieldhouse to host basketball games. Funding and institutional support are the major problems at this time and the timetable for development could be more than 5-10 year away. We all agree that the school needs it as much as the basketball programs do.
As much as many of us would like to see Central increase its exposure and conference affiliation, some of your comments are a little, well I'll just be nice and say "wishfull thinking." CCSU will NEVER rival UConn in anything - academics or athletics. The state won't let that happen - their eggs are in one basket in Storrs (and rightfully so). The A-10 won't be anything it was in the past, so don't get too caught up in that. We should try to hitch our boat to other medium size New England/New York public schools such as Maine, New Hampshire, URI, Albany, Stony Brook, etc. The model is to be more like Southern Illinois or Western Kentucky. Those are larger schools that can compete as "high mid-majors," in basketball and football but are still distant thoughts in their respective states behind the likes of Illinois, Kentucky, and Louiville. Despite their success they still get very little respect and rare national exposure. IMO that is the realistic goal - to build a strong regional, second-tier program. It doesn't sound sexy or exciting, but the reality is the major (or BCS) conferences run the NCAA, and you just have to make the most of the profile you have. To date, CCSU has done that with the little resources it has been given.

Re: Why is CCSU not trying to build an on campus arena as well? -- SuperSenior, 22:53:36 03/29/05 Tue
What do you mean "rightfully so" that CCSU plays second fiddle to UConn? Tuition is rising every semester and is almost the same as Uconn's. For your information, the education department at CCSU is much better than Uconn's. If you think that a state university such as CCSU (with a similar tuition to UConn and a fairly large amount of students) doesn't deserve a greater chunk of state funding than it currently gets then your a moron. Uconn's football stadium is a joke. They will never be anything than a borderline ranked team (best case scenario). The state carried the burden to build that stadium and bent over backwards to accommidate Uconn. It's a disgrace. CCSU plays in a rundown gym and certainly deserves a completely new on-campus facility (fairly large). It's a disgrace that Uconn plays in a great facility while we play in a gym that is probobly in a worse state than their practice facility. It's a disgrace that a team (UConn basketball team) with very little or no standards of decency gets that much public funding. Need I recite the history of UConn basketball?? Calhoun exposed for donating a ridiculous amount of money to a AAU team that his recruit came from this year, Ben Gordon slapping around a girl, Rashad Anderson running around scaring people with knives, Kellogg getting getting booted for drugs and questionable academics, Selvie was busted for DUI then skipped bail and attacked a woman, Uconn assistant coach arrested for picking up a hooker, Donyell Marshall didn't have the grades to get into U of Maryland (not exactly Yale) but miraculously had no problem going to UConn, Butler was a juvenile delinquent, El-amin busted on drug charges, Cliff Robinson gets suspended every year for drugs, NEED I GO ON???
Meanwhile, Howie kicks off Damien Battles (one of his best players) to send a messege to his team. CALHOUN WOULD HAVE NEVER OF DONE THAT BECAUSE WINNING IS EVERYTHING TO THEM. CCSU basketball players have a great reputation. It's a disgrace and so is your idiotic comment.
P.S. The A-10 is a very good conference. Saint Josephs and Xavier were extremely good teams last year. I also believe Richmond was ranked at one point last season and so was Dayton. George Washington, Rhode Island,Temple are also always pretty good teams.

CCSU vs. UConn -- J.J., 10:30:44 03/30/05 Wed
Super Senior - First, I'm glad to see that you have such high respect for Central, so I am not offended by your comments. I think very highly of this institution too (because I'm an alumnus), but I just think sometimes you need to look all factors, not just basketball.
Academics - CCSU is a great school, one I am very proud to have graduated from. However, the classification and mission of our school is vastly different from UConn. CCSU is a comprehensive state university built on its strong history as a "teachers college." Its primary missions are to educate professionals (teachers, nurses, accountants, etc.) for service in the state economy, and to prepare others for post-graduate education.
UConn is a land-grant, research-based institution built upon its agricultural and research roots. UConn's mission is to educate students (like CCSU), but additionally it is to grant advance degrees (doctorates) and promote research in agriculture, the sciences and other fields. UConn is established in state statutes as the only institution for these purposes. That is why UConn has a medical and law school. Central could not establish those types of programs even if someone were to personally donate $100 million to begin a law school - state law would not allow it. That is why it was such a big deal to have the state legislature ALLOW Central and Southern to issue a doctorate degree in education just 2 years ago.
Athletics - No argument here. CCSU runs a clean and proud program because of the great people (student, coaches, administrators), but also because we are small. I am very proud of the style and accomplishments off all the CCSU teams. I too think Howie runs one of the best programs in the entire country! Not becasue of our record or NCAA appearances, but becasue of the type of student-athletes he recruits and our "team personality." But the major difference is that at CCSU the university supports athletics, and at UConn athletics supports the university. UConn faces the challenges of running a multi-million dollar athletic BUSINESS, and yes, sometimes they break some of the rules. Yes, I am mad that the state would buy UConn a $92 football stadium (and yet doesn't do crap for CCSU), but their was stadium support for "other" reasons.
Budget and Politics - As you know, UConn is almost 2x as large as CCSU so comparing the 2 is that much more difficult. However, the CSU system (CCSU, ECSU, SCSU, and WCSU) is larger than the UConn system, yet the entire CSU budget dwarfs the UConn budget. Here is where I have no answer except to say because the missions are different maybe it costs more to run a research university than a teaching one (personally, I don't buy that). The other reason is really because UConn has the law school and tons of alumni and Husky fans throughout the state and in the legislature, they get soo much more additional political and budget support. National Championships and Big East sports don't hurt either :) Honestly, that the part that really sucks - its all about politics and clout, and CSU has very little when compared to UConn.
In the end, I don't disagree with you that all CSU students get the shaft from state. CSU tuition is on par with UConn, but they get much less resources and facilities from state government (there is more than enough info to support that argument). I've been saying that for years, but the only way to change that is to make this information well known to all students, faculty, and alumni and then TAKE YOUR CONCERNS TO YOUR LEGISLATOR AND THE STATEHOUSE! CCSU's problems aren't in New Britain, they're in Hartford. So I don't think we disagree about the challenges Central faces, its just that I have an understanding of why they exist, but I don¡¦t see any changes in the near future without a grassroots effort to face them.

How much do you think your tuition is going to go up if CCSU has a similar budget to UConn? The CCSU athletic budget each year is a little over 3 million....UConn's, probably 25 times that much. Not to mention the size of the athletics staff and how much that would have to increase to support a larger program. Ever compare the staff pages on the UConn site to that of the CCSU site, there is no comparison. Your attempt to make a point is lost on the fact that you can't compare apples and oranges. The two schools will never be equal when it comes to athletics and if you don't realize that then who is the moron? Want to know why you know so much about those UConn players, because it makes the news. Just because it doesn't make headlines doesn't mean it doesn't happen at other places too.

Re: Why is CCSU not trying to build an on campus arena as well? -- SuperSenior, 22:20:50 03/30/05 Wed
Did I ever say the athletic departments should be equal? I'm pretty sure I never did. It is fairly obvious that Uconn has many more people on the athletic staff than CCSU, and I am not debating that point. My point is that Uconn has built its athletic department with state money, and I feel CCSU deserves the same respect. We basically play in a high school gym. It's a disgrace. J.J. made great points that the entire CSU funding is dwarfed by Uconn. CSU students get far less funding per student than Uconn students do. How is that right? My point is that people have become complacent with CCSU getting shafted by the state. Howie has built a program with great players and role models, and since there is no pro team in Connecticut (and like uconn, numerous CCSU alumni still live in the state), I don't see why it is such a outlandish claim that CCSU's athletic department (and academic) deserves a great deal more funding. CCSU could develop a great fan base if the facilities were upgraded, which would allow us to explore options to move to a better conference (A-10). Uconn's athletic department wasn't built over night and required a great deal of state funding. Why isn't CCSU given the same respect? Uconn's football team was given a golden ticket to Division I, and we can't even get a new on-campus athletic facility. You act like Uconn deserves ever cent they get while we scramble for pennies that Uconn drops. You act like Uconn pulled its athletic department up by its own bootstraps, which is certainly not the case. If we were given more money and respect, I could see CCSU developing into a popular little athletic program, but it doesn't look like it will ever happen.
I NEVER SAID THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENTS SHOULD BE EQUAL, BUT THE VAST DISCREPENCIES BETWEEN THE TWO IS A DISGRACE. IF YOU CAN'T SEE THAT THEN, YES, YOU ARE A MORON. Thank you J.J. for listening to my whole argument instead of putting words in my mouth and then bashing me.

Noone is saying what is happening is right, I'm just saying that that is the way that it is and it isn't going to change. Want to know how I know? I'll give you a prime example. CCSU has not had a person in charge of tickets and promotions for more than a year now. The position is sitting there and waiting, but noone at the school or the state will give the ok to hire anyone to fill that spot. This is a very important job that has gone unfilled for a very long time. I agree that the discrepancy is wrong, but history has shown that this is not going to change. My points have always been that we need to try and do better with what we have, not complain that we deserve more.
As for UConn being dependent on state money, that is not entirely true. All three BIG coaches make more than a million dollars a year, and that money is not paid by the state, it is paid for out of fundraising money. I know the state fund them tremendously (believe me I know), but they have also done an unbelievable job fundraising and helping to support themselves. The two new buildings they are putting up have all been privately funded.
As for bashing you, the negative comments on this board did not start until you started them. Check the board, this is not a negative board, but you are the one who used the word MORON first, I only responded to it. Don't expect others to sit back while you take shots at them and call them morons.

More good points -- J.J., 11:24:32 03/31/05 Thu
Insider - while I agree CCSU need to do better with what we have before asking for more $, you also pointed out that Central is playing with one hand tied behind their back (unfunded positions, etc.). How can CCSU maximize it programs when it it at a distinct disadvantage compared with other schools? In reality, only a few CCSU teams are really struggling and C.J. was recently quoted in the Courant that all teams (except MBB and WBB) are not fully funded with scholarships. The facilities need upgrades and the administartion is not fully staffed. To me that all sound like a question of funding. So if that is all true, what things do you think CCSU must improve at its current level of funding? Again, I don't expect to get what UConn gets in terms of funding, but a substainial increase is warranted, even if that means UConn gets a little less from the pie in future years.
Yes, today UCONN athletics is a big business supported by tons of revenue - enourmous ticket sales, local and CPTV television deals, Big East $, BCS $, tons of merchandising, huge corporate sponsorship, wealthy alumni funding, and of course, state support. The reason UConn currently has so much non-state revenue is becasue the state has invested heavily in past years and built the political support and infrastructure for their current success. We all know Calhoun's salary is not fully paid by the state, but the state provided the imputus to build a national program. Again, I am not lobbying for UConn-like funding, but instead a commitment from the state and the CSU system that it is a goal to make this the top REGIONAL program - and to do that CCSU needs more $. The history and success of UConn is a great thing, however this should not be done at the expense of Central.
Finally this is a board meant for free thoughts, and it is not a board for personal attackts (of posters, players, coaches, or administrators). I think it is healthly to disagree on any topic, but lets all remember to respect the opposing person's view. This is the perfect forum for any positive suggestions from posters or readers of this board to help CCSU improve its athletic program.

Re: Why is CCSU not trying to build an on campus arena as well? -- inside, 11:46:57 03/31/05 Thu
Agreed, more money is the answer. But don't expect it to come from the state. Gov. Rell has all but said that budget increases are not a possibility, in fact, the exact opposite is happening. The athletic budget at CCSU has remained the same for the past three years, and with the rising price of everything, that in effect means you deal with less money each year. You want to know my solution, we need to FUNDRAISE! But in order to do that, we need to to fill all of the positions so that can happen. When an AD is worried about tickets, and not fundraising, that is a problem.
Agreed on the board comments. And apologies to anyone who I may have offended, I was probably out of line, but not the only one. I realize everyone's goal is the same on this board.

Speaking of Fundrasing -- J.J., 12:53:40 04/01/05 Fri
On a related note, look at the political clout UConn wileds in the legislature. They basicly blocked a state audit of their foundation's finances (CSU also opposed the bill). A compromise was reached to only audit public funds every 2 years. Just check out the last parargraph from today's Courant article:
"The foundation has strong support among many in the legislature, which is filled with UConn alumni and supporters. The board includes numerous prominent citizens, including Capitol lobbyist Jay F. Malcynsky, Austin, and current and retired corporate executives. The donors to the foundation represent a who's who of well-known alumni, including Charles R. Klewin, the chairman and founder of Klewin Building Co. Klewin has been involved in various building projects on the campus, including the Homer D. Babbidge Library and the Dodd Research and Archives Center. Klewin was criticized recently for hiring former Gov. John G. Rowland as a consultant for his company after Rowland resigned."

More news on UConn's athletic dept -- J.J., 09:35:22 04/04/05 Mon
And what does this increased revenue for UConn yeild? Side contracts for officials and coaches, and questionable ethics. UConn's AD just recived 2 free cars from a dealership that works with UConn. The Legislature created this monster in Storrs and look at the results!
