I am definitely in two minds about building - I realize the downside w.r.t. time, but I am interested in Junk rigs and am aware that there are issues retrofitting to existing hulls. If I go the build root it would probably be a Benford dory a la "Badger". I also suspect that the total cost of setting up an old boat for getting to Hawaii (or similar passage) might be pretty high...

I have been browsing the LA craigslist entries and am considering getting a cheap (as in give-it-away-when-done-building) 24-28ft with an outboard so that I can practice. It just needs to be safe for 2-3 years...

I hadn't seen that particular ad - I have been concentrating more on boats in Marina Del Rey as I am studying acupuncture nearby. Slips there are overpriced ($375/month for 28ft - the minimum...), and seem to be a little hard to come by without transferring. I live just East of Downtown as I can't afford westside rents and I am considering selling my car and using public transport to get to and from the marina, then staying on board 2 nights a week (the max allowed outside a liveaboard mooring), and sailing on the weekends.

I really need some time on the water under supervision and could also do with more knowledge of the good cheap boats to look for prior to putting this all in action, though - hence the original post...
