Subject: Three reasons.
In reply to: Rachel 's message, "I like frames..." on 14:03:53 04/10/05 Sun

One, frames on a site like NIW would be extraneous. Frames were designed for the purpose of making navigation on complex sites easier. NIW is NOT a complex site - and using frames would only complicate it. I like simplicity. It has an elegance to it that complex sites just don't have.

Two, the text, message size, and top-post-open format on the NIW Voyforums boards (which I think are all good as they are) won't work very well with frames. It'll make the replies run off the side of the page more quickly, it will narrow and lengthen the open top posts so that you have to scroll down farther to reach your thread (even if it's the top thread on the board at the moment, you'll still need to scroll further), and if the frames are wide enough, it can mess up the formatting at the top and send stuff like the "post a new message" links off to side so you have to side-scroll.

...as you may guess from that, I hate scrolling, ESPECIALLY side-scrolling, and like to minimize it as much as possible. It's a personal preference, but she asked for opinions. *shrug*

Third, and this is possibly the one most near and dear to my heart - frames started out as illigitmate HTML, and while most browsers now work fine with them, older browsers don't. For several reasons, I use older hardware and operating systems on most of my main computers, so there's only so far I can upgrade my browsers. So the browsers on Max, my desktop computer? Mess up frames big-time. Inline frames in particular don't even WORK on Netscape, and my Firefox on that machine is a beta edition (the version 1 edition didn't work on Max), so I use Netscape a lot on that machine. (Because IE is EVIL.) And even normal frames tend to bug it out. Admittedly, I have my board list, but I'd sometimes like to look at the updates and members pages....
