The settlers of Pern had these enhanced dophins that they transportd to the planet in deep-sleep. Or something. Anyway, they can talk, if a little disjointedly, and work things out. They partner with humans to do all kinds of stuff involving the sea. People who work with dolphins are called "Dolphineers" and are cool.
