Subject: A Tomb For Akhenaten ?

Recently, I've been going over a few of the many apparent anomolies concerning the Armarna period and its aftermath.

Now ,as I'm sure you'll be aware that Amunhotep III for some reason choose to have his tomb constructed in the Western branch of the VK. The reasons for this are unclear.

Whatever, we also know that Ay had his tomb also cut in the WV ( Western Valley) Now there are other tombs there, and in particular the unfinished WV25. Commonly referred to as Amunhotep IV' s Theban tomb, presumed abandoned following his relocation to the Akhetaten.

A couple of thoughts on this occured to me.

First, let's consider WV 25, discovered by Belzoni in 1817, it was found to contain intrusive burials dating from the TIP. During Otto Schaden's cleareance of the tomb , season 1972-1973, a number of objects were found which had apparently washed into WV25 from Ay's nearby tomb, WV23.

Now , WV25 does not extend beyond the first corridor, however as Reeves points, the doorway has peculiar design features. Set at the bottom of the 25 steps downward. This doorway is set in an extension ' which reaches out from the lowest step in a design not found in tombs of Kings who reigned before Amunhotep III, or after Ay'. So clearly, given it's WV location, and unique design feature, it is a tomb which could only have been started by Amunhotep IV, or Tutankhamun. Now it is thought that Ay's tomb (WV23) was commenced by Tutankhamun, and probably unfinished at the time of his death. Ay then going on to complete the tomb for himself. However, given Ay ruled only about 4 years, and we know not if WV23 was commenced in the Reign of Tutankhamun, we do not know how much work would of been required for its completion for use Ay. Of course, it seems to me that WV23 could not not have been made in the time Ay ruled. Although it is possible, if only the final three chambers required cutting as I outline below.

Therfore, whilst I had a leaning towards WV25 being commenced for Tutankhamun, and abandoned at his death , I cannot really accept that WV23 was commenced as Amunhotep IV's theban tomb, although it remains possible. Why not of put Tutankhamun in there, unless of course it's final chambers were not cut. WV23 is fairly straight, having only two rooms, and a well chamber with no shaft sunk.

So, any thoughts my friends ?

Ian
