A "bee" is a social gathering of people who share a particular goal. Hence any group getting together to get a job done. A quilting bee, a husking bee, a spelling bee, and a poetry bee are some examples. I think the origin is unclear, being either from Old English or perhaps just from spelling out the first letter of the Latin word "bene" or "good," since such groups usually have a "beneficial" purpose, getting a group together to do a job not easily done by one person alone.

My mother was a great quilter btw as were her grandmothers and aunts. I have a couple of quilts that are perhaps 80-90 years old. Not in the best shape as they were made to be used, and they were!, but still priceless to me.
