maybe i'm one of the few who wasn't surprized.
As i recall everyone was allowed to loose their temper on the show.
Grandma swatted Grandpa with the broom, Grandpa left home and slept on the pool table for a night or two, Olivia permed her hair, Ben worked for a rival logging firm. John Boy and Mary Ellen were always loosing their tempers. Even calm, collected Jason got into a fight at the Dew Drop Inn defending Erin. I think it just made them more like a real family.
