Yeah, I agree that the best explaination for all of the "stuff" is that the Waltons must not have been poor BEFORE the depression. My parents grew up in rural areas in the early 50's and 60's and they didn't even have some of the aminities that the waltons did (like indoor plumbing and bathrooms!) Both my mother and my father grew up in families with seven children and in some ways lacked the extras that the Waltons did. Their families were poor, but were hardly considered in destitute(mom's family had a TV years before they had plumbing), yet it was common for rural families to do without a lot of things (which the Waltons seemed to have)when times were "good" some twenty years after the depression. So in order for the Waltons to be considered truly poor during the depression, you have to assume they had things before the depression. In one episode, Oliva even mentioned that John could have easily laid his hands on $200 before the depression. That was a lot in the 20's!
