I'm not sure the fact that the mountain was named after them implies that their family had money. If you recall, I think in the episode The Deed, their family had lived there for 100 years or so and when the first Waltons showed up, they just basically staked out 'their land'. In the show, the whole plot revolves around the fact that they don't even have a deed to the land, and on public maps it shows it as being free timber land. Doesn't sound like they even paid any money for the land.
