I don't remember what the Waltons' phone sounded like, but when I was growing up in the 60s, in rural West Virginia, we were on a party line. Everyone on the line had a different ring, and we could hear everyone's ring in our house. Ours was 4 shorts. I think nearly everyone in rural areas was on a party line back in those days, so I imagine they were in the 40s too.
