Date Posted: 17:30:37 12/13/03 Sat As previously stated, anybody can join the Forum discussions, post, etc., but if I come across any threatening language or excessive cussing on the forum, I will give a warning. Then, if it keeps up, VoyForums will be notified. Anyone wondering about what's been going on with this Dankus thing? Okay, well, here is the Official Story: Part 1 - Posted a thread on http://forums.dankus.net titled "Speech Codes" seeking comment on a story about Ellis County students vs. Political Correctness; of the dozens of replies, only one - Anthony Smith - had me re-word what he wanted quoted. I quoted others' answers, and put them in my story. The story was written two months ago. Part 2 - After finally waiting two months, the story ran in the Dec. 4 issue of our paper (Page 6; Community); I checked on http://forums.dankus.net to see a message from Blake Barton, one of the students I had quoted; a member of his church contacted his mom, telling her about the story; after I had confirmed the story, and the quotes, I began receiving threats from http://forums.dankus.net members, who happened to be ex-Midlothian High School classmates. Part 3 - After relaying the threat information to my editor/publisher, they instructed me to file complaints/charges; I told them I was not comfortable filing charges considering these guys were not serious, so instead, my editor/publisher decide they want a story about it; the story appears the following week on the front page of the Dec. 11 issue. I subsequently get banned from http://forums.dankus.net ... Part 4 - Because of the nature of the entire situation, fellow reporter Sherry Long began researching freedom of speech on the internet for a follow-up story on the threats and http://forums.dankus.net ...The Supreme Court ruled that any content, private or otherwise, on private/public forums/message boards/instant messages were in fact not private and can be supoened by a Court of law; terroristic threats have been made, and violators have been put on trial, sent to prison because of it. The second part of the Dankus ordeal will hit newsstands in about two weeks. So there you have it. http://www.elliscountypress.com [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
