In reply to: john strange 's message, "CHRISTMAS AWAY" on Monday, December 03, 06:50:09am

My first two years at sea were in the Blue Flue SS Peleus, known as the Xmas Ship, so I was home for the first two Xmas's but away for all the others.
I was in the Federal MV Westmorland in 1970 when we docked in the Royal Docks at 21.00 Xmas Day at the end of a 'double-header' on the MANZ run. Just managed to catch the last couple of pints in the pub just outside the dock gates. (Can't remember the name)
As we were racing up Channel to catch the tide I can recall feeling sorry for the guys on all the ships going down Channel outward bound, most of which were Scandinavian with Xmas trees at the foremast.
Would give just about anything to do that trip all over again.
Regards Phil in Wet but Warm NZ
