I rarely post now as I feel I have very little to contribute seeing as I never sailed (apart from on The Serpentine & the Woolwich Ferry) !!!!
But some of the postings on here surely belong on the other section?
My apologies to all concerned if I have got it wrong.

Ok, so whats the smell/stink thats stuck in your minds ? On all the different ships you sailed on ONE must have been remembered the most. Despite the smell on crude oil tankers etc etc, mine was the "BEAVEROAK" a converted cargo ship to a container ship, the smell was the the soap supplied called "ASTRAL" and it was highly perfumed, all of us supposed hairy arsed AB,s were walking around smelling like Ladies of the night.

With nostalgia wafting about my nostrils I've come to the conclusion that being at sea in the 50's held no 'bad' experiences, they were merely blips on life's learning curve.

at last some normality prevails.
what we need is a subject like "poofs",which generated more than 200 posts.
this kind of subject brought everyone together and made light banter without the bullying.
can anyone come up with a one word subject that we can all join in on.

in being little more than a fishing village, liverpool was once regarded unimportant,so insignificant was itsstatus, that it wasnt even included in the 16 th century ptolemy map of england.it was the city of chester.regarded as the north wests major seaport.with the river dee its main waterway in the region.however in 1709 liverpool slowley expanded and eventually overtook as the north west:s main seaport.then bristol was overtaken to make to make liverpool the main shipping port for the west coast impotantly it also overtook the ports of spain@portugal in the african@american trades.or {the slave trade} the goree that is oppersite the liver buildings was the trading area for for slaves @the remains of ringbolts can still be found.before the 19 th century we spoke with lancashire accents.but in the first half of the century a multitude of irish immigrants came to lpool by there thousands to escape the crop famines.lipool had as many irish as it did english.the languages were crossed which resulted in the unmistakable {scouse accent}.last but not least hector, just a few yards to the through covent garden to the north stands the church of st.nicholas or as it is otherwise known the sailors church.on the pier head which is in between the liver builings @the famous landing stage are the monuments to the many thousands of seaman who lost thier lives perfoming there duty in the mercantile marine@merchant navy.just a very small portion of lpool culture hector{LEARN} unlike were you are we got culture @style you might be lucky enough to get the odd bag of burlap washed up on your shores.lpool not all bad news hector {terry scouse}.

Hello all, put you heads together and come up with the truth on this, mine was the "RUAHINE" out of KG5, London in 1964, I was a JOS ( a peggy to the bosun and bosun mates plus all the other hanger on's sailmakers etc etc etc ) all from the Isle of Lewis, the food was DIABOLICLE. I used to look at the food on their plates before putting it in the "Hot Cabinet" I even saw some kind of metal clip in a boiled potato once which on returning to wash their dishes was on the side of the plate, the rest had been eaten! Half the crew came down with diarrhoea and the DR refused to admit food poisoning, This is the truth, can anyone beat this expreiance?

What was the most boring place that you went to while in the M.N.I did two trips to Basra on the Esso Canterbury in 1958/1959,this was the most unintersting place on earth for a first trip to sea, just a seamans mission which showed some ancient films.I was glad to sign off and then join the Edinburgh Castle.I never went back to tankers after that.

Hooray !!! The jury has given their verdict on what we all knew was the truth. Henri Paul was a drunk and the Ritz are as much to blame as him for letting him behind the wheel. This should be all put to rest now but for that mad Egyptian Al-Fayed. How long will it be before he gets out of his rat hole and starts other absurd theories?

Did anybody have such a bad night as me when I was sailing from Port Talbot to Swansea? We spent the whole night at sea flying up and down and when we hit the dock at Swansea it knocked a hole in the side of the ship just above the waterline. I think it was on the Kenton or the Coquetside and they put us in a huge dock in Swansea and took the plate off. It rained for three days and the ship rolled over and sank in the dry dock. I stood on the dock in the rain for about three hours in my underwear while the firebrigade tried to pump the water out. It was probably about 1950 or maybe 1951. It was a nearly all Welsh crewe I remember and they were home for the weekend but being the cook and a Geordie I was left on board.

Hi there.
Anyone of you in the UK (sorry to the Australians/New Zealanders etc) know anything about the A1 road?
Went to Barnard Castle, North Yorkshire from Buntingford last year and wanted somewhere to eat on the way. Well, these days it's service stations-incredibly expensive-or wait till you're almost there and you have a place called Quernhow where there's a great transport cafe. It's been taken over now with not such a great menu or service. But on the way up we sped by another one too quickly and can't remember where it was. We think it's about half way up and has a petrol station as well. Can anyone maybe tell me the name of the area please?
