Many of us who have gone abroad or have moved to other places in the Philippines are probably homesick and eager to know what is happening in our town and to our friends and relatives in Tagudin and elsewhere so for this in mind, I've created this message board for I thought that this would be a great medium in bringing us together and in getting us reacquainted and closer to our hometown of Tagudin. Like an excerpt from Alduous Huxley's "Brave New World" I watched with amazement as a young man riding a carabao sent text messages using a wireless cell phone... It was surreal.

I can't help but notice the different addresses of the people making posts in this message board; none of them local. Although a great majority of the posts originate from the US, I have seen posts coming from places as far away as Africa, Great Britain, Canada, Europe, Scandinavia and the Middle East. And not to forget those in the immediate vicinity, i.e., Japan, Australia and Hong Kong.

All far away places of origin that's for sure - brought together electronically to a point of convergence here in this forum. I still marvel at the technology; it's as if we Tagudinians were all gathered in the town plaza as in a town fiesta, conversing and catching up with news and such. I bet not too many people these days appreciate email, the net, wireless and cell phone technology, palpably saying under their breath "why that's old technology".

I had an opportunity to go back home to Tagudin for a visit not too long ago and was totally amazed to see a young man sitting on a carabao in the middle of a field in Taliawen. In his hand was a cell phone. He was texting! It was an incredible sight to behold at least for me.

Besides being amazed, after a while I realized how behind the times I've really become in thinking that folks in Tagudin couldn't possibly have (that many) cell phones. After seeing that young man on his carabao use a cell phone I've become a believer. I believe this world has been shrinking, getting smaller unbeknownst to me.

- I would also like to thank the mayor and his staff for mentioning Seaside Park for the accomodations. The hanging bridge in Ambalayat is fantastic! I never knew that there is such a bridge in Ambalayat. One of the places that I definitely would want to see when I go back to Tagudin. Ex-mayor Lardizabal of
Baguio City passes on

BAGUIO CITY�This city has lost one of its most illustrious sons with the death of Baguio�s first elected mayor, Luis Lardizabal, on Monday in Quezon City. He was 90 years old.

He succumbed to a lingering illness at 8:55 p.m. at the National Kidney Institute.

His body lies at the Mount Carmel Church on Aurora Boulevard, Quezon City. Internment is on Saturday morning at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina.

The city officials, led by Mayor Braulio Yaranon, were making arrangements on Tuesday with the late mayor�s wife Cresencia and daughter Caroline to have his body brought up to Baguio City to enable residents here to pay their respect to Baguio�s longest serving elected mayor.

If it is not possible to bring Lardizabal�s body to Baguio City, Yaranon will lead a city delegation to Quezon City on Friday evening. Yaranon has ordered the flag in front of city hall placed at half-mast to honor Lardizabal.

Addressed by many as Tang Luis (Father Luis), Lardizabal is remembered for his public works and parks development projects, brilliance in law practice and eloquence as a speaker, besides his wit and humor.

Lardizabal was born on June 21, 1914, in Tagudin, Ilocos Sur. He finished high school at the National University in 1931 and worked his way through law school at the University of the Philippines as a piccolo player for the university band. �I was the best piccolo player because I was the only piccolo player then in the university,� he used to tell the mayor�s staff.

After passing the bar in 1937, he set up his law office here and was soon serving clients from all over the country. His legal service for workers and the poor led him to organize the first labor union in the Cordillera region.

His political career spanning 27 years began in 1946 when he was appointed city councilor. He was elected twice for the same office before becoming Baguio�s first elected mayor, defeating rival, Benito Lopez, in 1959.

The Nacionalista Party stalwart lost the mayorship to Guillermo de Guzman in 1963 and he was taken in by the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos, a fellow Ilocano, as presidential assistant on local government affairs.

He returned in 1967 for his longest unbroken term as mayor, defeating Yaranon twice. With elections suspended following the declaration of martial rule in 1972, Lardizabal served until the end of 1979.

Up and about at daybreak and sometimes in his office before his staff, Lardizabal would work into the evening, issuing directives for the immediate repair of potholes, trimming of park hedges or presiding over meetings on major projects.

Still, he found time to serve as governor of Lions District 301-C, president of the Host Lions, supreme commander of the Knights of Rizal, Sir Knight of the Knights of Columbus, chair of the Baguio Red Cross fund campaign, director of the provincial governors and city mayors league and chair of the mayors� league.

He also taught law and sat as dean of the college of law of the Baguio Colleges Foundation.

Lardizabal received from President Marcos the �Most Outstanding City Mayor� award in 1971 under the Presidential Assistance on Community Development and the �Sultan Award� as the most outstanding executive in 1973.

In 1980 Marcos appointed him elections commissioner and replaced him with Philippine Air Force deputy chief, Brig. Gen. Ernesto Bueno.

Lardizabal returned to local politics in 1983 but lost to the fellow lawyer Honorato Aquino for the lone city seat in the then Batasang Pambansa. He made another bid for the mayorship in 1987 but again lost, this time to faith healer Ramon �Jun� Labo, one of the most colorful figures to grace the city�s political history.

Labo, however, was unseated over questions on his citizenship in a court battle waged by Lardizabal. Vice Mayor Jaime Bugnosen took over the post, with Lardizabal unsuccessful in his court pleading that he be proclaimed for having earned the second highest number of votes.

Lardizabal then retired from politics and moved to the family home in Quezon City where many of his former law clients, fellow Baguio politicians, city hall workers and friends visited him.

Relatives said he remained mentally alert until last August, before he turned semi-unconscious and was hospitalized for six weeks for kidney failure and pneumonia.

- Bio (Bee-yoh) Bridge spans what remains of the once mighty Amburayan River that threatened the town of Tagudin when it changed course (visit portions of the old dike). Remember the many "cumaw" stories or tales of little children being kidnapped so that their blood could be spilled unto the bridge pilings for strength? This story was used to scare many a truant school kid into going back to class. There was a deep portion of the river at the Tagudin end of the bridge opposite the Sudipen end. It was a good fishing hole. The "bokto" that inhabited the upper streams got fat feeding on green eelgrass and moss. Since the water was only waist deep in the shallows, it was perfect for little boys to experience their first catch with a "kitang" or the fishing line with multiple hanging hooks. This picture conjures up so many memories. Just think, only my friend Quirino Villanueva (SAS class 57-58) who lives above the river's edge on that promontory now enjoys the view! - It is unfortunate though dry most of the year that the river is getting wider every year and taking big chunks of lands in Tagudin and in the nearby town of Bangar during the flood season. The barrios of Pudoc, Sawat, Pacac and many others are in danger of becoming deserts permanently. I believe this is due to the unabated illegal logging and uncontrolled developments in the uplands where the river is originating. If the Philippine and the local governments and even the local people continue to ignore this problem, these areas of Tagudin will be lost forever. It is very sad but it is the reality. As far as I know, nobody from the government both local and national ever paid attention to this worsening environmental problem in this part of the country. (NT) -- Moderator, 10/22/04 8:03pm

It is Thanksgiving day here in Canada. Hence, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our fellow Tagudinians living in Canada. Thank you for all your efforts in undertaking our previous fund raising dinner dance. You guys are the best! We were able to donate once again to our fellow kailians back home. Attached is the letter that went with our donation towards building repairs for Southern Ilocos Sur Region Hospital (Bio).

Once again, to all the volunteers of Tagudinians of Canada, and all those who came to attend the wonderful occasion, thank you so much! God bless you for doing such a good cause!

SAS Class 1957-58... Some memories -- Deacon Tom Buenavista of Farola SAS Class 1957-58, 10/ 9/04 11:31am [3]
I have browsed this message board a couple of times and so far I like what I see. What you have started here is a good thing. Thank you.

So far though I have only seen one SAS class 1957-58 post from Cetong Batac of San Diego. I know there are more SAS alumni out there from that batch of graduates. So how about it folks... let's hear from you! Let's hear from Polon Villanueva and Elpidio Lubina of Chicago, Leon Encarnacion, Lauro Bunoan and Resting Laranang from the greater LA area, Heli Aquino (nee Pagaduan) and Carmelita Laplana of the San Francisco Bay Area and even Sister Josephine Ong from Rwanda or Tanzania I don't remember where anymore. These are just a few of the many members of this class here in the US, in Canada, Australia and even Europe and Africa. This batch of graduates is special to me not only because I graduated with them but also because this was a premier class in terms of accomplishment.

Those were halcyon days at St. Augustine. True this was a different time and place but it was a time the Church echoed with Gregorian chanting in the afternoons while the sound of laughter was unmistakable from the girl's department as they played volleyball or softball games in their (yikes) bloomers. Although the classes were largely segregated and the boys couldn't get but glimpses of the girls, the grotto and the Church provided good observation venues. One of the few times the school came together was during basketball games and Field Day...

- I remember Mr. Vicente Las Marias (Maestro Ente). Unless you made it to his class you weren't considered to be in High School. He was a scholarly man, always wore those horn-rimmed glasses with pipe in hand. He was mild mannered and soft spoken. In his class no student ever got bored. His stories about Tagudin's history rivals those given in the oral tradition usually related in informal get-togethers. It was during my senior year that I had Mr. Las Marias as my English/Literature teacher. The textbook was Silas Marner. He knew the story inside out. Should a student try to participate in class using fabrications and little white lies to cover-up his not having done the assignment, Maestro Ente would always know. He could sniff a BS artist a mile away. He was a straight shooter, a strict disciplinarian and a shining example for us all. It was a privilege for me to have learned under his tutelage. "KUDOS" to the person/persons who thought of this wonderful project. Now I have something to be proud of about the place that I grew up, not that I have never been proud of it everyday.But this is really terrific. My Mom was from Dardarat, and my Dad(daydi maestro Jose) was from Farola,so this is really a great pride. My family is planning to go home next year(God willing), we will be glad to stop by your resort and enjoy the amenities that you offer.

Tinubong
Tinubong, as a delicacy, derives its name from its container, an internode of buho (bulo in Ilocano) with the node at one end, which is called tubong in Ilocano. The diameter of the bamboo tube ranges from less than an inch to almost two inches.

Normally, the tubong is 15 inches long.

With the other end of the tubong open, a wet mixture of glutinous flour, sugar, coconut milk, small strips of young coconut flesh, cheese and margarine is inserted into the tube.

In the good old days, the tinubong was cooked over charcoal embers until the tubong changed its color from green to a slightly scorched black. Nowadays, however, large-scale tinubong makers use the kind of ovens found in bakeries.

In the old days in Tagudin, tinubong's main ingredients were sweet rice, sugar (tagapulot), and coconut milk. The cheese, margarine, etc. were just recently added. I used to love to eat tinubong when I was growing up in Tagudin.
There is a month of the year when people in Tagudin make Tinubong which is called "panagtitinubong". Could anybody tell me if they still have this practice and what is the significance and what month did they use to do it? Thanks.

- "Tinubong" is made during the month of January but am not sure if it is the last friday. It is done to celebrate our thanksgiving for all our people (Tagudinians) especially our farmers' yearlong harvest. That is why people bring different kinds of gifts to mass and offer them during offertory. Some bring friuts, vegetables,rice, bread, native cakes etc. Greetings! It is great having this website. - Hello Mario, nice of you to stop by. The only time you probably need reservations is maybe during the fiesta and holidays just to ensure your rooms but I am sure they could always remedy it. You can contact Seaside using the Contact page at Seaside Main Page or you can just show up at Seaside. It is open 24 hrs a day. Pool closes at around 10 PM just to allow night swimming. Catering is being considered for the future but this is also good so Seaside could help other businesses in Tagudin especially the nearby restaurants. I am happy to inform you that I have redesigned and just launched the new website for Tagudin and Seaside Park today Oct. 1, 2004. I have thought of changing it to make it truly a global site especially for Tagudinians worldwide. I have added a few things that could serve as a reference for people.

1. The online weather and forecast at the main page for the Ilocos area

2. The clocks showing the different times from certain countries where there are a lot of Filipinos at the main page

3. The online current exchange rate of the peso to the US dollar and currency converter at the photos/rates page

4. I apologize for some minor problems with the guestbook. I just found out that the format that I used was not compatible with some browsers on the old guestbook. It is now working and you can now also read the contents of the guestbook. If you wanted to sign before but couldn't do so please do so now. I appreciate it.

It is nice to see a site pertaining to Tagudin, which is my birthplace. I am living in Canada now for 28 years and in fact I even founded Tagudinians of Canada which still exists for around ten years now. My name is Ed Lorenzana, and probably you know my siblings Cynthia and Israel Lorenzana, who are still managing our Shell Gasoline Station at the Crossing.
I hope to visit Tagudin again, I will surely go to the Seaside Park to see it for myself.

I now live here in Surrey, England, but formerly in Urdaneta City. My father, Bening Zabala, is from Tagudin, Ilocos Sur. His mother is Dauz.
I had visited Tagudin a few times when I was young, and stayed with my Uncle Solomon. I remember Manong Abat well, and Purita, who was also a classmate when we were at college in Dagupan City.
I am researching our family history, and I hope that next time I am in PI, (I go home 2 or 3 times a year,) I will visit Tagudin,and I am glad to find that there is an hotel there already.

Here is a recipe of the most famous Ilocano dish. Many of you know how to cook this by heart but for some of us like myself sometimes guess. Everytime I try to cook pinakbet I always say "kasano iti agluto iti pinakbetten". This is one of my favorite dishes.

6 eggplants ... quartered
4 parya or ampalaya in Tagalog (bitter melon) ... seeded and quartered
5 okra ... halved
3 tomatoes ... quartered
1 onion ... quartered
3 tbsp boggoong nga aramang or bagoong in Tagalog (shrimp paste or fish sauce)
1 cup pork ... cut into small pieces
2 garlic
1 cup water
salt or patis to taste

Saute garlic, onion, tomatoes, boggoong and pork in a frying pan. When pork is cooked, add eggplant, parya, okra and water. Season to taste. Simmer until vegetables are crisp-tender.

SAINT AUGUSTINE.

We pray then on this day that through the intercession
of our dear patron saint, Saint Augustine, we obtain
PEACE, JOY and PROSPERITY for our beloved town TAGUDIN.
We also pray for S.A.S that it may continue its mission
of spreading the Good News to the young of Tagudin and
its neighboring towns.

Ingredients:

5 lb.. Goat meat
2.5 lb. Goat�s skin
1.5 cup of chopped red onions
1.5 cup of chopped ginger
1 cup of Kalamansi or Lemon juice
Optional: goat brain, liver, chili and vinegar (sukang iloko)
Add salt to taste.

Procedure:

1. Remove goat's skin by burning with blow torch or dried bamboo grass
2. Scrape off burnt skin
3. Separate skin from goat carcass
4. Set aside about 5 lb.. of meat
5. Broil meat to medium rare or rare according to taste
6. Slice goat's skin into small strips
7. Slice broiled meat into small-bite size
8. Mix all together the ingredients.
9. Add salt to taste
10. Serve with bottle of beer or gin.

" Kilawen means to eat raw. Normally, meat is broiled just enough so the meat is not slippery when being sliced. How the meat is sliced, varies from one place to the other.

In Vigan, the slices are as thin as possible. If heated in a frying pan and turned to the other side (don't stir) before serving; they call it "Imbaliktad".

In the province of La Union, the slices are big and thick; sometimes described as "binalsig"- cut with axed. They claim, you won't have anything to chew if it's too fine.

Soak the goat's skin in water as long as possible, to make it soft and easy to slice. It's best to slice it last."

Hello to all and especially my Acosta and Bello cousins in Tagudin.

My father - Marcelo Parpana Acosta- was from Tagudin and left for the US in 1929. My family visited Tagudin in 1971 , after my father passed away. I remembered visiting a memorial(?)that had Mr. and Mrs. Marcelo P. Acosta inscribed on it as a contributor. It was a structure surrounding a tree somewhere located around the town or church plaza. Can anyone tell me if it is still exists and if so, can you describe it? What was the significance of it? If anyone has a digital camera and it is still there, I would appreciate a picture . - My grandfather the late Vicente Dauz also came to the States in the late 1920s but went back to PI right before WWII. He passed away many years ago but I am sure he knew your father, perhaps buddies back then. Your father and my grandfather were probably in the same group of Tagudinians who came to the States at that time. They were probably the earliest groups of immigrants from Tagudin. The oldest brother , Alfredo, came to the US, returned to Tagudin , then came back to the US and settled in New Jersey with my cousins. Unfortunately, my Uncle Serge and Uncle Alfredo were the only Acostas I knew since I was so young( age 7) when my father passed away. I know I have many cousins in Tagudin and know a few. I am sure your relatives in Tagudin will be very happy to see you. Tagudin has changed since you last saw it but not a whole lot though. There also many beautiful islands to see in the Phil. THINGS TO DO AND PLACES TO SEE WHILE IN TAGUDIN -- Moderator, 08/ 5/04 9:25pm [2]

I know many of you would be going back to Tagudin for a visit one way or the other sometime soon or in the future. Here are few of the things that you can do and places to see on your visit to Tagudin besides visiting relatives and friends.

A good way to start your stay in Tagudin is to visit the church then the surrounding areas such as the plaza, the townhall, the market, etc. to get yourself reacquinted with the town. It is always a nice experience to see familiar places that you haven't seen for awhile. For the first time visitors, don't forget to see the famous sundial in front of the townhall.

You can go swimming, and swimming is generally good. You can swim in the ocean, rivers in some parts of Tagudin, and of course at Seaside Park. Just be careful swimming in the ocean. There are times when the waves are rough and big and certain areas go abruptly deep. The beaches closer to town such as the ones in Tarangutong, Pudoc, Pacac and others are a bit rocky and harder to get to. These places are more suitable for day picnics than for swimming. The northern part of town has better beaches and most of them are all accessible from the highway. Patique Beach located in Becquez/Sevilla is perhaps the best beach that Tagudin can offer. It is not at par as the other famous and better beaches of the Philippines but I think this is a decent beach.

The junction at Bitalag is a good place to buy fruits and puto (rice cakes). They have chicos, avocados, pineapples, plenty of mangoes, bananas, and yes they have apples which which I am sure are imported from other countries. They have the sweetest chicos. Most of the fruits that are being sold here are seasonal but you always find something here.

If you are into nature, someone told me that there is a place somewhere in Ambalayat where you can pitch a tent and commune with nature. It's in a remote area free from the bustles of the town.

And if you want to venture out to the nearby towns, there's the Santa Lucia church in Santa Lucia where they have the dark Virgin of Sta. Lucia which they said to be miraculous. It is visited by many devotees each year. If you have a strong sense of adventure, Suyo and especially Sigay are still untouched. They have forests, springs, waterfalls and rivers. There are lots of possible places to trek and just be with nature and the local people. Awasan Waterfalls is in Sigay. I heard this town also grows coffee. These areas are all hard to get to since they are all mountainous and the rivers swell in the rainy season. It is probably worth the effort though. Transportation going there could be a problem.

If you want to venture out further you can go all the way to Bessang Pass in Cervantes where more serious trekking is possible. Bessang Pass is about 5,250 feet above sea level and served as the backdoor to General Yamashita�s last ditch defense during the last stage of World War II. It is also possible to reach Tirad Pass (mountain with three protrusions on top which often called "The Three Sisters" and this area is another historic site) from here but it would take a lot of effort on your part. The climate in these areas is milder than the lowlands and it gets cooler as you go higher, and Cervantes is a starting point for trips going to places such as the famous town of Sagada in Mt. Province, the Rice Terraces in Banaue and to Baguio City going on the opposite direction. Actually, Tagudin is one of the starting points for going to the mountain provinces at least from this side of Luzon. Tagudin-Cervantes-Bontoc Road which begins at the junction in Bitalag is also called Highway 4 is a national highway but not well kept and most of it unpaved. I think there is a plan by the Philippine/Ilocos Sur governments to rehabilitate the highway. It would be great if this plan materializes for it would serve as an alternate route for going to the famous places in the highlands and it would shorten travel time to these areas. It would also uplift the lives of the people living in the uplands as well as in the lowlands.

Ex-Chavit aide now a town mayor

TAGUDIN, Ilocos Sur�A retired police officer and one-time close aide of Luis �Chavit� Singson, the governor-elect, has been proclaimed as mayor of this town, one of the biggest in Ilocos Sur.

John Versoza, who retired from the Philippine National Police with the rank of superintendent (equivalent to the rank of major in the military), beat his closest rival, Vice Mayor Rogelio Lorenzana, by a big margin in the May 10 election.

Versoza was the official candidate of the ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats while Lorenzana ran under the banner of the opposition Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP).

Versoza made it in his second try for the mayorship of Tagudin.

He first joined the race in the May 2001 election, but lost to Jose Bunoan, the outgoing mayor and one of the winners in the provincial board, or Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) in the just-concluded polls.

Residents of this town attributed the victory of Versoza to his close association with Chavit.

Besides, Versoza enjoyed name recall for anchoring a program entitled Ilocos Sur Hotline aired every Saturday over radio station DWRS, which is owned by the Singsons.

In the program, Versoza acted as �trouble shooter� on problems, particularly employment, of mostly Ilocano listeners or members of their families working here in the country or abroad, one of the residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Manila Times.

It was not known whether Versoza would remain as anchor for the popular program when he assumes office as mayor on July 1.

Hi!! its a brialliant idea to have a place like this in tagudin..instead of tagudianians going to other/nearby towns to enjoy the same amenities, they can have them right in their own town.. the park does not only offer recreation but also provide jobs for our fellow tagudinians... Congratulations and more power!!!
