We may have done this topic before but it's worthy of a repeat.....One of the Wackoos and I were talking about special cold drink concoctions from when we were kids and I jokingly said us poor Southside kids never even had ice cubes for our drinks back then! That got me to remembering the iceman who delivered blocks of ice to us. I'll bet none of you rich kids ever got ice in big blocks to put in what we called, the 'ice box', but I'll bet a few of you others, like George, and maybe #212 will remember. We were given a card with different price amounts on the four sides of them. There were 4 prices on the card, 10, 15, 20 and 25 cents. If we wanted a 15 cent block, that amount would go on top of the card. If we were having a good week, financially, we may have gotten a 25 cent chunk! Wow, when that happened we felt rich! The iceman's name was Mr. Cea and he rarely uttered a word except "hey, you kids get offa my truck"! When he went into a house to deliver the ice, we would jump on the back of the truck, chop a small piece of ice off with his ice pick and run like the devil was chasing us! Ahh, those little ice chips sure tasted good on a hot summer day! I remember Mr. Cea would throw a piece of burlap over his shoulder for when he carried the ice into the houses. Anyone else remember the iceman?
