I cannot believe we made the show. And not because we drove the El Camino to the track on Friday, no, that was easy. Except for an alternator that was wired up wrong and we ended up stranded at a gas station. No, that really wasn't a problem. We took care of that in under 5 minutes. The real problem reared it's ugly head on Saturday, about an hour before we were to depart to Weslaco, Tx for the cruise.
You see, before leaving on Saturday, we went thru the entire truck/car, changing every bulb we could find. Just to be on the safe side. Well, it was here that the problem began. You see, after putting it all back together, we decided to go for another test drive, before the actual drive. Everything went well, or so we though. While I was inside getting ready to leave, my son, Abel, came into the house and said.."Hey Dad, do you know you are missing a taillight?" I said, huh? "You mean a bulb is still out?" He said, "no...you are missing the entire taillight."
Oh my God, it was right then and there that I remembered that I forgot to bolt on the rear passenger taillight. This can't be happening. No way! I mean, c'mon, you can't just walk into O'Reilly Auto Parts and say, hey, give me a taillight for my 1967 El Camino. No, you cannot do that. So, after getting up off the floor, my son, Chris, and I took of, retracing our route. I walked about a mile on foot, looking thru heavy weeds. I mean, c'mon, we just had a hurricane. The weeds were as tall as I was. By the way, if anyone is missing a Spinner Style hub cap in a size 14", I found it.
Well, after about 45 minutes of searching, we finally found it. Yeah, broken in one million pieces. Oh the humanity. Who, who would drive over a rare piece of automotive history such as this? Who ever it was, I bet he drove a Ford...LOL! Well, we gathered what we could and made our way to the auto parts store to see what else we could find. One of the large pieces we did find was a clear lens that fits inside of the red lens. It was this clear lens that saved the day. A little red tape, some crazy glue and we were back in business. Check it out, see if you can tell where we repaired the taillight.

Now, the cruise. Or should I say, Dolly Destruction Cruise 2008...LOL! Man, it was about 15 minutes into the drive that I wished I was driving my modern muscle car. Couldn't do that though. That car was being driven by sons Junior and Abel.

And they were having a blast. My other boy, Chris and I? Well, our highlight was driving past all those poor people in line in back of some Salvation Army vans who were handing out free meals for flood victims. Yeah, I felt pretty crappy. Anyway, I have gone on long enough. So I am going to speed it up a little. Much like our cruise. We decided to cut it short and not follow the rest of the cruisers. The 4.10 gears were killing us and the temperature gauge said 230 degrees and climbing...Yikes!...Over all, the car show turned out awesome! Here is a picture gallery and some random pics from the cruise.

Our hardluck award has to go to Joe (Troublemaker) from Raymondville, Texas. They started the drive to Weslaco at about 5:00pm and they never made it. This picture was snapped at Fuddruckers in McAllen, Texas. That is far as the 'ole Troublemaker Malibu could make it. Problems with a bad fuel pump, a broken starter and finally, running out fuel kept them from making the show. Thank's for trying Joe. We really do appreciate it.

By the way, the next car cruise in is scheduled for this coming Saturday. There is no cruise for this one. Just a good 'ole hangout and bench race session. This one will be at the Dairy Queen/Texas Tops on Old 83 in McAllen, Texas. I will keep you all updated on that. Thank's for your time and we will be back with a little bit of video footage of the cruise. Good night...
