The story of deathless avatar, palace in the Himalayas etc. appears in the Autobiography of a Yogi, first published in the 1940s in the USA, half a century after Lahiri's passing and in another continent. Perhaps this belief goes back to Sri Yukteswar?

I doubt it. P Yogananda states that he first heard the story from Swami Kebalananda (interesting that he did not hear it from his parents) then later from Sri Yukteswar. He also states that Swami Kebalananda heard the story directly from the lips of Lahiri Mahasaya.
