Early in his life, Rajneesh experienced some profound change of consciousness, declaring himself to be enlightened. This remained with him and he became a college teacher of philosophy for many years. He had great charisma and was a good lecturer, and this drew many people towards him.

After one or two decades, perhaps coinciding with the growing number of Western disciples, he turned into the infamous figure as which he is best remembered.

Shortly before his death he admitted that he had duped his followers and not at all lost his ego. I think he was going to be expelled from India, to Uruguay, but unexpectedly died because of illness.

Some intellectuals highly appreciate him for his 'humorous' style of provocation and word-play rather than for being a teacher of spirituality.

Opinions about him differ considerably even among the Advaitins. J. Krishnamurti thought him to be simply a 'criminal', U.G. Krishnamurti called him 'the biggest pimp the world has ever seen' while Shibendu bemoaned his passing as a great loss for humanity.

Maybe he was India's answer to Aleister Crowley. They have something in common.
