Just to skew this thread back to the left (margin)...

One substantive difference between liberalism and conservatism is that liberals tend to be more attuned to the underserved and marginalized populations. Accordingly, we (and I place myself in this category as an unabashed liberal) are more willing to understand the perspectives of others.

The number of absolutist conservatives is significantly higher than absolutist liberals. There is no liberal 700 Club. There is no liberal Rush Limbaugh. There is not a history of liberals killing anti-abortionists or Klansmen or ministers or any other conservative groups. It is because of our world view. I in no way believe that all people who are conservative kill abortion doctors or commit hate crimes. I do not see the world in a way that lends itself to those associations. I suspect that the people I have met who accuse me of playing some part in Jesus' death are not liberal.

Tolerance is part of liberalism. Part of being liberal means understanding that your adversaries are reasonable according to their own paradigms. Part of being conservative means understanding that your adversaries are wrong because they do not agree with you.

Some of you may respond to this convinced that I am wrong. I will continue to hope that in the end, logic wins out.
