EJ. Relax. I'll try to give some answers.

>1) What in the hell is the show about?

David Milch has said that this show sprang from the question "If God had a message for the people of Earth, and there was some urgency about it, how might he deliver that message?" It is rife with religious symbolism, lots of it Christian (which Milch is) but from other religions and disciplines too, and this was one of the puzzles I loved about it. This show has to be studied; you need to note every nuance. I watched every episode at least 3 times and did a lot of outside reading for support.

>2) Did they fucking hire the fucking writing staff
>from fucking Deadwood to fucking write the fucking
>dialogue for this?

The main writers for the show were Milch himself and Kem Nunn, a popular "surf-noir" writer. Some of the other writers were from Deadwood. It was Milch who had the vision, and he exercised total control. I found the language to be quite genuine for these characters in this day and age and in their particular situations. I agree with you that the language in Deadwood was a bit over-the-top, but I didn't really find that to be the case here.

>3) A drug dealer thug and his "colleague" decide to
>stay in the shithole motel for days and become friends
>with everyone, even helping them clean the pool?
>Please.

You have to understand that not even Freddy and Palaka understand what is going on, except that something much larger than themselves is at work, and that they are part of it. They know they are there to protect the Yosts; they don't know why. My favorite scene with them was the hospital parking lot scene, Freddy acting as something of a Greek chorus describing the action, and protecting the Yosts as they help Shaun escape the hospital. It was sheer poetry.
Hint: The Snug Harbor is the "safe haven" where God's chosen gather to receive his messages.

>4) What made you think it was the best show on TV?

The performances were sublime across the board. The two top performances: Brian Van Holt and the fabulous Ed O'Neill, who banished that Al Bundy image from my head forever. I love a great show with a metaphysical theme. It made me laugh a lot.

>I'll watch the last three episodes because I have them
>TiVoed, but it hasn't made much sense at all so far.

Yes, please finish the series. I was delighted with it and only wished that it had been renewed for another season.

Btw, just want to say to you and everybody else that I'm doing so much better now; not 100% yet, but probably at about 85%. I did the grocery shopping thing this morning, which was exhausting, but it felt so great to be doing something normal. Mr. Lynx is totally going to kill me when he gets home from work. :-)
