Dennis,
I totally agree with you on teaching our children respect, manners, and etiquette towards our country, towards each other. It bothers me that many put the burden on the school department when in fact parents should start with their children as they are little.
The comments I had given were not just from reading the forum writings, but listening to radio show comments, and conversations among my friends.
You mentioned a draft and these young boys would serve only if they choose. Over the weekend I had talked to a friend of mine who is a Colonel in the Air Force. Dennis, as you know this is a different type of war. My friend, felt that its going to be a bad one and that the draft may not have to be in effect because there a many young men and older that have already wanted to join. I know my son and nephew are some and my other friend has a son who is in the medical field who wants to join. I am proud of these men.
It is our job to teach our younger people about flag etiquette as you stated - but why did our generation stop the "Pledge of Alligence" in the schools? I don't believe the high school does it anymore (I don't think this was the schools choice-perhaps a parent complaining?)
A busy life.....what happened to Sunday being that family day when there was a Sunday dinner on the table or the Family picnic as we took that Sunday drive to the mountains. Everyone now works - stores are opened for business.
We must love our children by guiding them, teaching them right from wrong, spending quality time with them, and yes disiplining them when needed.
And before I say to that young man with the flag on his car about flag etiquette - I would like to go up to any higher generation and ask "why don't you have one displayed at your home." but then you know what - this is called "freedom of choice".
