Dear Sharon,

On the one hand, I went back and reviewed the postings. Kelly said it bothered her to see flags on hoods of cars. I simply pointed out what is flag etiquette, and said I didn't like flags being used as a bandana. So far, nobody has dared to tell any young people how to act.

On the other hand, why shouldn't we advise young people how to act? I'm your age, I was drafted during Vietnam, and people one generation up from us had no compunction whatsoever telling us what to do. Maybe they overdid it, but it seems people of our generation underdid it. We're afraid to say "Boo" to kids. I'm not sure it's helped.

What's more, these kids screaming aroung in their cars ... they'll only serve if they choose. There is no conscription or draft and hasn't been one in 25 years. Kids growing up with me spent their high school years worrying about the draft (and screaming around in cars!). Blessedly, our children have not had that burden.

But let's not be afraid to act like adults and elders; to tell younger people what they should consider doing; to point out history and tradition; to teach flag etiquette. It's kind of our job, isn't it?

Dennis
