I get your frustration; I really do. I think that the pageant and its winners still fail to reflect many things about young women in America. I mentioned this before on here but I am part Hispanic, and I understand wanting the pageant to reflect the diversity of our country. With all respect to Grace, we had a blonde Midwest academic/achiever and she did nothing to bring attention to the program. So, I really do think that for many reasons, Miss America NEEDS to be reflective of what young women in America are like today.
I do not know much about Robin. I have been far out of the loop this year and did not get to follow much of what she has put into place. I am going to plan a post about it later in the week what I am seeing, but one thing that genuinely concerns me is the reports that scholarships are not being paid. If that is the case, her failure to do so could completely end the Miss America Organization as we know it. Some of the changes put into place this year are positive where at least as they called it on the reality show years back "a Senator's wife." But I do get it, there is still very much a struggle in the pageant world, especially MAO, about what judges think a winner should be. Remember that Joy Behar chose Teresa Scanlan.
I like Miss TX, and have said this before, but I really mean it. I think she has a lot of qualities that would be great in a Miss America. She is very pretty and believe me, people would notice her. She looks YOUNG and reflects what young women in America look like. I also think that she could bridge the gap between the pageant, its perceptions, and the non-pageant public. Her father is in law enforcement and I think she could really help start conversations there. I do think that with this panel of judges who seem to be versed in the world of modern entertainment, they might be able to see that in her or perhaps someone else with those qualities. I also like OK in the fact that she did grow up in poverty and really struggled to get where she is. She doesn't have storybook life coming into this. All the millions of Americans, including those in her state, living in poverty need to have a real conversation. I am passionate about this because I work with people living in poverty and these conversations are not being had. The first thing I will tell you is that we do NOT need trite "I overcame this and that and so can you" conversations. That is not the solution to this. It is becoming an epidemic. But maybe Sunny could be a voice of real-life struggles and help to usher in better understanding.
LOL I guess I sound like a politician now. But, I really do hope that the judges do get it and give us a winner who can move this organization forward for the little bit that it has left. It's on borrowed time, and nobody is paying attention. Realistically, if national media got a hold of the scholarship story and they have to give scholarship money which they do not have the Miss America Organization is over. It will not survive financially, nor will it survive in the court of public opinion AND sponsorships.
Let's see what happens tonight. I do have somewhat faith in these judges that they will have the foresight to select a woman who reflects modern young women. I am with you in my skepticism and realistically understand it may not happen. But we can still hope for the best.
