All's well that ends well! Nobody can argue that an inferior contestant won. This was the first since I think Betty Cantrell where someone just nailed each competition, and even more because Betty bumbled in final interview.

Grace's win comes on the 10th anniversary of Laura Kaeppeler winning Miss America. Well, Laura was January 2012 and Grace December 2022. Both won preliminary talent. 2 out of 3 of the new winners are talent winners, Camille and now Grace.

My hope is that Grace can bring in some new sponsorships. Overall, I think she was a sure thing and nobody can disagree with her win. I still love Averie Bishop but she did every bit as well as I thought she would do, she got awfully close to the crown. And she has a bright future. I didn't think she would get that high. And I LOVED West Virginia. I was starting to think she was going to win the whole thing, but she surely made herself and state proud. They were in the top 16 6 or 7 years ago.

There seems to be a changing of the guard with competition, some of the heavy hitter states were left standing again. More on that later!

Congratulations to all the great people of the state of Wisconsin, especially Grace Stenke!

Subject: SOME THOUGHTS AFTER THIS WEEK

Date Posted: 21:50:44 12/14/22 Wed

This has been a very interesting week at Miss America. It is always fun to predict and then see if we are right or wrong. It’s funny-these are the most pageants I have seen and thought I was certain who was standing out, yet it’s a whole new ballgame at Miss America. There are always times when you may or may not agree with who won, but there is a way that you can tell who is going to excel and not. When I saw Miss TX, I thought Averie was the next Miss America. I haven’t ruled her out, but I am not sure she was up to what we saw at Miss TX. But, you never know! We aren’t privy to interview. Some of the winners nobody ever saw coming. But maybe that’s the fun in all of this. Going into tomorrow night, I don’t think any of us really know what to expect, and who is going to win. Me personally, I do not see one person excelling in all areas, except perhaps Wisconsin and Georgia. I expect to see them in the end.

My personal favorites this week were from non-sash states. They usually are, because despite the wins of Nebraska, North Dakota and Alaska, you still do not see those states on a regular basis. I must say, though-Nebraska has really grown and are sending quality contestants year in and year out. Stephanie has been consistent all week and memorable. Last year’s winner was, they are sending good talent, I am overall impressed.

Some of my personal favorites this week:

Maine-I LOVE her! She has very good talent and something really refreshing and real about her, plus she did well enough in each competition. Maine is always working against fate at the Miss America pageant, but I wish that one of these years they would break through. This would be the year, IMO. She is not unlike Cara or Emma that you would fall in love with her. There’s just something very real about her.
Wyoming-She is absolutely adorable and fresh. I think she mentioned that this was her first pageant or first year competing, but now with systems like USA and Volunteer, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of her. With some good competition behind her, she could excel at a national pageant.
West Virginia-this is a state that is showing signs of life, and they certainly did this year. She is one of my dark horses. She is natural, fresh, enthusiastic, and has managed to blend her SII in a positive way. She is competing like she is not under pressure and just letting us know who she is.
Montana-She has been one of my pleasant surprises the whole week. She has been consistently good. Not outstanding, but good and very likeable. She really has done her state proud.
Maryland-I didn’t know much about her before the pageant, but I really like her. She is interesting, has a great platform, and everything she did was confident yet down-to-earth. Like WV, she doesn’t seem to be stressed out and is really just letting us get to know her.
Delaware-She is such a sweet girl, I just love her to pieces. If I had to pick anyone from this class to be my best friend, it would be her. She is a great spokesperson for the adoptive community and her adoptive parents gave her a lot. She didn’t get where she is by accident. She is just so damned cute and lovable, and she has a gift to share with the world.
Nevada-Getting to know her, I absolutely love her. I would love for another state to have their first win.

We may be seeing a changing of the guard as far as judging. We will see what happens tomorrow night, but what worked in the past was just not floating with these judges. We do need some modern judging. There’s no “what do we need to do to modernize the pageant, get ratings” etc. because we are off the air. The ship officially sank. I don’t even know if Miss America will be on shows like Kelly and Ryan or GMA for a national tour. Sadly, Emma had such a marketable platform with Special Olympics and it was never utilized. So, I think you do what you do, pick a great winner, and see what she can do with her year.
It was nice having Emma host preliminaries. I don’t know why that was never an option before. I think it is good to incorporate the outgoing Miss America. It might have been out of respect for her busy schedule, but it is a great opportunity to have the outgoing Miss America be a part of the process. I don’t think Emma is too sad about giving up her crown. Maybe because she didn’t have nearly as much to do as some of her other Miss America sisters.

I will post my official predictions tomorrow. But for fun, here were my predictions on this board since it has opened:

2008-Elyse Umemoto
2009-Katie Stam
2010-Katherine Putnam
2011-Jalee Fuselier
2012-Kaitlin Monte
2013a-Laura McKeeman
2013b-Kelsey Griswold
2014- Kira Kazantsev (I saw her coming)
2015-I think I predicted Betty after prelims
2016-wasn’t sure, that year was kind of like this year
2017-I had nowhere near the top 5 that year
2018-Holli Conway
2019-Camille or Victoria Hill
2021-Sidney Park

So, you see that I doom my predictions mostly to runner-up positions. I apologize ahead of time for whoever I pick! I will post my complete contestant rundown and picks tomorrow. Until then, enjoy the preliminary commentary!

SII Group 3
NM-She did a decent job answering her question, although I wasn’t quite sure what her platform was. She didn’t stand out in the group.
IL-cultural representation in music. I felt she was very convincing, spoke eloquently about needing more representation in music, and also spoke about her mother’s experiences not being able to compete in the MAO as she wanted to do. Very down-to-earth and you really were drawn to what she said. Well done.
IN-Triple A Project. I am not sure too much details about her platform, but she spoke with confidence. I said this before about other speakers but I think you need to assume that nobody knows about your platform and you need to explain it to the audience, regardless of how you sound. But she did sound confident.
ME-I just love her! Her platform is called Shake Your Beauty and she told a story about wearing a blazer to school as a 14-year-old and being shamed for it. She was lighthearted yet effective about how it affected her and related it to her as an adult. So relatable and she drew me in. I would want to get to know more about her, I hope against hope that we do.
AL-Arts For All, a bit pageanty and rehearsed in her answer, but good overall. She is showing off those good AL interview skills.
VA-4As Autism Awareness. She did a nice job of articulating herself, telling her family story. I think she did a nice job.
CO-Healthy Lungs Healthy Life. She spoke very eloquently about her grandfather and his lung cancer, likened her platform to wanting lung health for everyone. I thought she did a very good job with it, very well done.
NJ-Stop The Traffic regarding human trafficking. She gave some very informative information, including common places where you might be finding victims and how to spot them using a hand signal. I must say that I learned something very practical from her and you never know where it might help someone. Well done.

Talent Group 3
RI-Monologue from On The Basis of Sex. I thought she did a good job with it, well-spoken with good emotion behind it. 6
VT-Sang I’m Still Standing. She is a very lovely girl but wow, it was sooo off key. It was in the Kristi Glakas category. Any hope I had for her of breaking the cut was put away by that performance. I hate to say it, but it was in the 2-3 category.
OK-Dueling Banjos/flute performance. It was the same that she performed at Miss Oklahoma. It wasn’t anything that would blow you away but it was solid enough and entertaining. 6
KY-Clogging to Banjo Fantasy. I mentioned it as she was performing it live. It wasn’t up to the level as Tawyna Mullins, but the judges probably have no idea who Tawnya Mullins is. On its own merit, it was entertaining. I would give it a 5.5 to 6.
TN-Sang What I Did For Love. It was an okay performance, although her gown was very pretty, and she looks great onstage. 5
MN-She did a martial arts dance. Truthfully, I know very little about martial arts and dancing combined, so I was judging it on what I saw. It was energetic, and she seemed to demonstrate a lot of skill. Cobra Kai is popular right now and I think it is neat that we see trendy things in competition, although for her this is a discipline for her that seemed to start well before the show. I gave it a 7 based on what I had seen.
WI-I went back and watched this. My initial thought, which I wrote down, is that it seemed too fast and didn’t keep up with the tempo, but best so far. I can see why she won, it did seem technical and that she clearly is talented at playing. I gave it a 7 just because it seemed off to me, but I am not a judge there.
TX-On My Own. She was definitely in her form last night in talent. It was a strong, solid performance. I gave it an 8. She used the same costume as at Miss TX.
GA-I Didn’t Know My Own Strength. This probably would have been my pick for the win if I was judging. It was a powerful, emotional performance and really resonated with the audience. I am guessing it had to be close with WI. I know some people always make the argument the judges are favoring one contestant, etc. Hard to make that argument when she won SII the night before so I do not think it was that. She already has an award and she is firmly in my top 10. But it was still very good. I would have given in a 9 based on emotion and performance. She really drew you in.

Red Carpet Group 3
NM-Very nice in a yellow spaghetti strap gown. Her answer was good as well. Not the standout in this group, but nice overall.
IL-very nice in gown, nice presence onstage. Her answer was good, she seemed very genuine. Nice overall.
IN-very pretty darker blue evening gown with sequined/beaded halter top, nice presentation. Her answer was a bit hesitant in places, I didn’t think she answered as good extemporaneously as she did in SII, but nice presentation overall.
ME-her presentation and answer to her question were just “okay” nothing that stood out in the group.
AL-gown presentation was nice as you would expect with a Miss AL. Her answer was a bit rehearsed, but I thought it was good. One of the better combinations in this group.
VA-probably the best combo in this group. She had a pinkish-red dress and she had a very nice presentation. Also, she had a strong answer to her question.
CO-nice gown presentation, her answer sounded very logical except towards the end a bit. Overall, very nice.
NJ-Gown was very pretty. I mentioned this last night, but she was asked about immigration and the situation at the border. It seemed like they saved the toughest question for last, nobody else was asked about anything that controversial. She answered well, I thought. She said very humbly that she did not have the answers, and she is probably right. She mentioned that they needed to get good people to figure it out, and I also agreed with that. At the end she kind of rambled about it being dangerous but overall, I think it was a great answer.

And there you have it! There is every contestant, ran down. I will post my overall impressions and then do an official prediction post.

The talent in group 2 was probably the better group of the night. Some nice talents in this group, headed by SC, CA and KS.

SII Group 2

AR-Digital safety. Very well-spoken, very effective at discussing online safety for children and teenagers. She really communicated in a way which I think parents would appreciate, very well done.
IA-ABC’s of bullying. I thought she was very effective, very passionate and sounded very convincing. She spoke about her own experience and gave positive examples. I wrote down that she was one of the better speakers in this group, so I suppose it was no surprise that she won last night.
NV-Breaking Down the Fourth Wall-she was the best in this group, in my opinion. She spoke very eloquently about valuing one’s self and for motivating children. She spoke with a positive tone in her voice and was very convincing.
NH-Mind Your Mental Health. She was very genuine and mentioned that she partnered with NAMI, which is a great organization. She also gave a simple relaxation exercise and related it to each person. Very thoughtful and good communicator.
NE-Very inspiring about her own experience, spoke about testifying about abuse at the age of 8. I thought she was very confident, positive, and inspiring. One of the better of the group.
WA-Making the Invisible Visible. She explained her platform well about her own health struggles and how to support those living with chronic disabilities. She sounded slightly rehearsed but overall, a nice job.
AK-Sexual assault advocacy. Very well-spoken, very articulate. She gave a clear plan about how she would proceed, good details.
OH-Project Purpose. This is a motivational and success program. She sounded very positive and really sold her platform.
OR-Operation Joy. Spoke eloquently about her partnership with American Cancer Society and her own work, motivated by her cousin who died of brain cancer. Very well-spoken.

Talent Group 2

WV-monologue, It’s Not About Dirt. I really liked it, it tied in her platform with a metaphor for life. It was original and positive. She spoke with confidence. I really appreciated it. 7
KS-lyrical dance to It Doesn’t Hurt. She had a lot of energy, a lot of emotion tied to the song. Very good movements as well. I would give it a 7.
MT-Energetic dance to Runaway. She is one of my pleasant surprises this week as well, and she did herself proud with this song. A lot of energy, she had some good moves, very entertaining. I would give it a 6.75.
FL-lyrical dance to You Will Be Found. Beautiful costume, and she looked lovely onstage. Her performance wasn’t as strong as KS but I would call it average good. In 5.5 to 6 range.
NC-This Is The Moment. It was a nice enough performance, but I am not sure if it was in the right key? She has some pipes, that is obvious. The song ended very nicely. I would give it a 6.5 based on ability.
SC-This is not an affront to Jill at all, but her introduction video was without loads of makeup, especially eye makeup. She is very pretty and lovely without all of it. This week she has worn a lot of dark makeup and she really doesn’t need it. She’s just as lovely without it. That being said, her singing was lovely as well. She sang Someday One Day, and she has a very good voice. I would have given in a solid 7.75, one of the better in this group tonight. I really enjoyed her performance.
PA-Lyrical dance to Someone’s Family. This was a nice performance. I never heard this song before but it really made me choke up. She dedicated it to her late brother, it was very touching. Nice overall. 6.5
CA-Fantasie Impromptu. Beautiful emerald dress (before the lights went on). This song I have always heard played well, Catherine was no exception. I would give it a solid 7.75.

Red Carpet 2

AR-Plain white gown with silver accents and silver accessories. Nice onstage presence. She answered her question well regarding her platform. Nice overall.
IA-She was confident in gown, blew kisses towards contestants. She gave a very good answer regarding good boundaries between teachers and students.
NV-Beautiful in light purple, nice stage presence. Very strong answer regarding online presence. She related it back to her LGBTQIA experience and how it would bridge the gap. Very confident. Come on judges! She’d be fantastic!
NH-Gown was somewhat subdued but nice. Good answer to resources for mental health in schools.
NE-Nice in gown, some stage presence. Very genuine answer regarding her criticism after winning Miss NE. She related it back to her own expectations.
WA-She looked very nice in her gown, had very nice stage presence. Her answer to her question was really good. She was practical, talked about her own success about selling things in her career and building partnerships. Very well done. I liked her confidence.
AK-Very lovely in red, though she had a bit trouble walking. Good answer regarding lower income contestants, told about how Miss Alaska contestants share things. Very kind, and it says a lot about the Miss Alaska organization. Very well done.
OH-Very nice presence in gown. She does have a good presence onstage. One of the better gowns in this group. Plain white with cape. Her answer about diversity rang a bit short, though. She said by offering diverse prizes or something to that effect. It just didn’t make sense.
OR-she is really cute, all smiles in her gown presentation. Good answer to her question about how to build a national cancer network, explained how it worked in a timely manner.

I figured since we were waiting, I would just start with what I had. Same scoring as last night for the talent. Parts 2 and 3 coming as quickly as possible! I am going to finish the end of SII and group 2 talent.

Here are the first groups from last night.

SII Group 1
MI-STEAM platform, combining arts with STEAM education. I thought she did well, very positive, enthusiastic tone in her voice, communicated clearly. I felt like I understood her platform. One of the better of the group.
HI-Igniting Imagination in education. Also very good, she spoke about incorporating different ways of learning in the classroom. She is a very good speaker, very clear, I understood what her platform was trying to accomplish.
MO-Pediatric cancer/I think St. Jude’s hospital. A very meaningful and touching platform. She didn’t come across as strongly or passionately as some of the others, but she did communicate well.
DC-Her platform is The Dream Pact. She is an eloquent speaker, but I did not really understand what her platform was all about. She spoke about overcoming adversity, etc. but then was asked a totally different question in Red Carpet. If I were judging, I would want the contestant to tell me exactly what their platform is about, and she really didn’t do that.
SD-Spoke very eloquently about childhood cancer. She provided some statistics which really helped you to understand the need for urgency, also spoke about the lack of medicines and treatment for childhood cancer victims. Very well done. She made me want to go out and get involved.
DE-She is such a sweet girl. She was adopted and told a story about a nasty Valentine’s Day card she received mocking her for being adopted. I really connected with her on an emotional level and you just want her to succeed in life. What a great spokesperson for adoption.
LA-Also one of the better speakers. It seems like her platform is about kindness and speaking kindly to ourselves and others. I thought she was very well-spoken and convincing. Not a lot of pageant fluff, and with platforms like that you sometimes hear that.
ID-Math Matters. She shared her own experience as a new math teacher and why math education is important. I really appreciated her own insight, and she was natural and convincing.
MD-The Write Reason. She spoke very convincingly about the need for students to be competent at writing. It is a unique platform but one which I believe is very important. You all wouldn’t be reading this board if I wasn’t such an enthusiastic writer 😉

Talent Group 1
ND-Singer/songwriter performance of Somebody To Love. I really liked this. It was subtle, yet very pretty. I think this worked with her strengths, and she created a very nice experience for all of us. I would give it a solid 6.5 to 7.
MA-I was not familiar with the song, but in looking up the lyrics she sang it was Glitter In The Air by Pink. It is nice that she took on a modern song. However, her voice was all over the place, unfortunately. She does sound like she might have some power behind her voice but it just did not come across. It was off tone many times. If you are a fan of Mama’s Family, it is like that time Mama tried to sing “Raytown Oh Raytown” where she would just jump between octaves. Truthfully, I would have had to give it a 2-3. It really wasn’t good. I really like her and I hate that it was that bad, but it was pretty bad.
CT-she did an energetic Flamenco Dance. I always enjoy cultural dances, and this had a lot of energy. I would give it a 6 based on the energy and entertainment value.
AZ-she did a clogging routine, I am not sure the name of the song. Her costume was very pretty, and she brought some good energy to it, especially when she tapped a Capella. I would put it in the 6.5 to 7 category for entertainment and technical.
WY-Sang and danced to All That Jazz. It wasn’t great, it wasn’t bad. It seemed a bit amateur to me but it was a good enough attempt. She is a doll, though. 6
NY-I Put A Spell On You. I did like that she tried to make the song original and sing it in a more modern way. However, it just didn’t work out. She had some pitch problems and the performance seemed all over the place at times. It was a 5 for me.
MS-She sang Rise Up. She has a good voice and could hit some of the heavy notes. The only problem you have with this song is that the original is so dynamic that when you hear someone else sing, you are bound to compare it. I would give it a solid 7 in this group.
UT-Classical ballet to La Esmeralda. She has a pretty green costume, I could tell that she had some training. I wasn’t blown away by it, but it was solid enough. 6

Red Carpet Group 1
MI-her gown presentation was average, but her answer to her question was very good. She is a good speaker.
HI-Probably the best gown presentation in the group. She modeled very well, a lot of stage presence. She had a gold/silverish strapless gown and looked very lovely. She also gave a good answer. I would say combined, she was strongest in this group.
MO-She looked beautiful in her gown. Her answer was a bit rushed, however.
DC-Very nice presence in her silver gown, she modeled very nicely. One of the better gown presentations in the group. Shew as asked about renewable or clean energy, she answered very intelligently. Combined she was one of the stronger in the group.
SD-Pretty in red, very youthful and fresh. She answered her question very well, very intelligent and well-spoken. Another one which was strong in this group.
DE-She just radiates cuteness and warmth, and in gown that was no exception. Her answer to her question wasn’t one of the stronger ones but she was certainly not bad at all.
LA-Her gown was nice, presentation was good enough. She was asked a question about gun education, which believe me, in this current climate could be very controversial. I feel she did not answer it and side-stepped the question. With an issue like that I think you need to be very clear and explain yourself, but she did not.
ID-Her gown presentation wasn’t that strong, but her answer to the question was. She is a very good speaker.
MD-She had a nice stage presence in her gown, I noticed her. Also answered her question intelligently, thoughtfully. She has been a nice surprise this week, and especially because she came through in her speaking.

I thought this might be helpful:

2019 Preliminary winners

SII
Victoria Hill, GA
Jade Glebs, NJ

Talent
Victoria Hill, GA
Camille Schrier, VA

Results:
Jade Gleb Top 15, did not advance to top 7
Victoria Hill, 1st runner-up
Camille Schrier Miss America

2021

SII
Emma Broyles, AK
Morgan Fuller, TX

Talent
Sydney Park, NY
Isabelle Hanson, IL

Results
Emma Broyles-Miss America
Morgan Fuller-top 10
Sydney Park-3rd runner-up
Isabelle Hanson-top 10

So, if you win a preliminary you are liking your chances. It is important to note that of this year's winners, 3 out of 4 were from end of group. Emma was last in her group to be interviewed onstage and overall in interview. Morgan Fuller was near last in her group as well. BTW they have the preliminary interviews available with Pageants Live, and hers was awful. I have no idea why she was in the top 10.

This year, I think IA might be the one to miss the top 10. If there was a top 15, yes, but I think her overall presentation was not strong, especially talent. The others are a lock for me.

Good late evening everyone!

It was a bumpy night for those of us not in CT. However, it was still nice to see most of the competition, and we can see the rest of it tomorrow when it is posted.

There are years when there are judging surprises, it seems like it happened both nights this year. I didn't have Wisconsin because I thought she played a bit quickly and was not in step with the accompaniment music. I thought for sure GA had it, but I didn't see other purported strong talents like CA. IA was a complete, complete shocker to me. I think her platform is regarding bullying, I didn't really notice her all night. I guess this means they are liking her in interview. Tonight was hard, though, it's kind of hard to pick out who is standing out. It is just one question and a lot of people were good.

Right now, I do not think there is really a strong frontrunner as you see in previous years. It's kind of hard to pick out who is REALLY standing out because it seems like this could go a variety of ways. Also, some of the ones expected to perform well really are not on their game and even though you can't really predict anything with this new format, I think the preliminary winners are still unexpected.

Tonight, some people really jumped onto my radar and others off. I said if Massachusetts had good talent she was one of my serious picks for the crown. Well, she doesn't. South Dakota was a pleasant surprise for me this week and Nevada has come on very strong. Indiana is going to be a factor until it is all said and done. Wisconsin is at least top 10 and might possibly win.

I am thinking back to 2016 when a lot of the preliminary winners were surprising. And the final night was one of the most boring final nights I had seen, because Savvy Shields clearly stood out the whole night and it was just a formality. You also saw the strongest ones rise to the top. So, I think everything might be fine.

Or not. This year really is unexpected and probably the least predictable I have ever seen. I really have to think this one out this year. But that's the fun!

I will post as soon as I can tomorrow. It just depends when we are able to see what we missed.

Overall, the quality of speaking has gone up over the last several years. That is likely because it is a regular part of the competition now. I didn't really feel like anyone bumbled or totally blew it, nobody got stuck for the most part. Overall, well done.

Group 1
ND-Platform is One Body, One Mind about body image. She started out the group well, very articulate.
MA-Platform is Representation Matters/diversity. She spoke with a lot of passion in her voice, very positive, very convincing. The best in the group, in my opinion. She has a lot of presence and you remember her. She also has beautiful hair like our dearly beloved Cheslie.
CT-Platform is about abuse, either domestic or generational. I think it is a very good and relevant platform, especially generational abuse. She spoke well, very good without getting overwhelming.
AZ-STEPS is her platform, eating disorder related. She spoke about her personal experience and also had a lot of good statistics to back up what she was saying. She sounded very knowledgeable.
WY-Everybody Dance. About body positivity, she spoke with some passion and conviction. I really felt like I could connect to her on a personal level, she is someone who might not be the loudest in the room but you feel what she is saying.
MS-Music is Medicine. She gave a personal story, was well-spoken and seemed to bring the humanity to her speech. I thought she did a nice job.
UT-I missed her platform, her overall presentation was decent.

Group 2
Overall, this was the most consistent and solid group of speakers. There wasn’t a bad one in the whole group, and everyone spoke very well.
WV-spoke very passionately about agriculture. For someone who does not know a lot about agriculture, she gave some good information and helped the audience understand what she was saying, and she was also convincing about what needed to be done.
KS-She spoke in a motivational speaker kind of way. She talked about her hardships in her life. Please do not take what I am about to say in the wrong way, because I really like her and admire her. There are contestants that kind of try to cram in all of their blood and guts into a short time, and she did this both in this competition and red carpet as well. Sometimes it comes off as a bit overwhelming to the listener. I think a general approach would be better rather than trying to cram it all in, and perhaps make it sound so like the listener is not drawn down. I think it would be better to elaborate in interview. Again, this is not a personal criticism. I would like to hear about her story, I admire people like her. We should hear more from her. I just think it is how it is presented rather than why it is presented.
MT-Platform is related to kidnapping. I thought she spoke well, acknowledged it was a difficult subject but discussed a personal story of a child who was kidnapped. I thought she did a good job of presenting herself.
FL-Mental health and substance abuse issues. She does come across as a bit pageanty and rehearsed, but she did speak well. I remembered her in a group.
NC-Platform is Eat To Success. She gave her own personal experience and was convincing as to why she chose her issue, why it was relevant. Good job.
SC-Sexual violence. She did a good job, sounded very empowered.
PA-Substance abuse platform. She told a story of a sibling of hers who died as a result of substance abuse and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Very powerful, very well done.
CA-Platform related to overcoming fear. She is very well-spoken, articulate. She shared her own personal story but did not over-elaborate and sounded empowered. Well done.

Group 3
RI-Cancer-related platform. She spoke very personally about her mother’s struggle with cancer and how it impacted their lives. That is why she chose it. I thought she did a nice job with a sensitive subject.
VT-Mental health awareness. Very good speaker. Very convincing, very articulate. After hearing her, I actually wondered if she had what it took to help Vermont make the top 10 for its first time ever.
OK-Spoke about food insecurity, shared her story about her own grandfather. She doesn’t have some of the strongest speaking skills compared to some others, but she was nonetheless genuine and convincing.
KY-She has the personality of the pageant. Very comfortable with herself, and yet she manages to pull it all together very well. She is either an educator or a school board member and spoke very knowledgeably. You kind of don’t expect it with her and then she gives great answers, was the same way in RC.
TN-also spoke about food insecurity. She’s a bit pageanty and rehearsed when she talks but she did a good enough job.
MN-Very well-spoken about her own experiences with discrimination. I thought she was convincing and articulate, passionate.
WI-I thought perhaps she would be the winner out of this group or winner overall, because she was very articulate and showed that she was highly intelligent. She spoke about nuclear medicine and didn’t sound like a walking encyclopedia. I thought she was very good.
TX-She told a personal story about a young man she mentored, was very effective. At the end she introduced her platform title, it rhymes, but I forget what. She sounded a bit pageanty but overall I thought she did well. Others in the group were better.
GA-Very last of the group, just like Emma last year. Just like Emma has a sibling with special needs. I did think she did a very nice job, was very articulate. One thing that struck me about her was that she seems very humble and talks to you, not at you. If I were listening to her I would feel like I was hearing a friend speak, and I think that is what propelled her to the win last night.

Overall, the trend last year was that last or near last in the group won. We may see that tonight again. I am going to put up a separate post on Wednesday with the preliminary wins since 2018 when this format started to help everyone understand. If anyone has any of the groupings from last year or 2019, could you please send them to me? You can send them via the contact form at the bottom of the page. And then you will have my email address in response, feel free to connect anytime! I hesitate to post it here just because of the ridiculous spam.

A couple of notes on some of the higher profile contestants:

NY-I remember I said that I had her as a contender. After last night, no. I really do not think she is the next Miss America. Her questions just were not up to par. In fact, if she weren’t Miss NY I would just about write her off, but she’s Miss NY and she will be in the top 10 at least. I did see her talent and she isn’t going to set herself apart in talent, either. She excels at gown and should have scored well there.
TX-You all know I love her and would love to see her as the next Miss America. I don’t think she performed up to the level last night that I saw her at Miss TX. She did “well” but they’re going to have to love her personality and her interview skills or else I do not think she will be a contender for the crown. Top 10, absolutely. I just think something is off from Miss TX, although she did beat a very strong 1st runner-up. So, we’ll see. I just am telling the truth as I see it.

Tonight we will better be able to tell who is standing out and not. I am curious to see some of the talents tonight. Do keep in mind that we saw 2/3 in the top 5 each year since the new scoring. 2 preliminary winners and 3 non-winners. That is usually how the top 5 scores each year, so it is important to keep your eye out for the non-preliminary winners who are performing well throughout the competition.

And it will all start again in around 3.5 hours! I will be back live then.

Night 1 is over, it really does fly by. Lots of great competition, so let’s break it down! A few housekeeping notes about the competition:

Contestants are seated onstage off to the side to see the other contestants. I am guessing it will be that way for final night as well. I remember the outrage over contestants being offered a donut when that happened years ago. I like this setup, they are not right there in view of the performing contestant but they can still enjoy the competition.

This is not meant as an affront to either Arianna or Emma, but whoever wrote that banter for them should be fired. When I was a child I organized Christmas Eve plays with me and my cousins for our gathering, and even I was more talented as a child than the banter back and forth. It was pretty bad. They are doing a nice job, just the obviously staged banter is not good.

There is a closing number where the contestants dress in their evening gowns and are grouped according to the color. We see this at USA and also saw it at Volunteer. Very well done. I wasn’t wild about the opening number, but that one was a pleasure to see.

And that’s that! Overall, the production level is not that great, but at least there is a pageant. Sometimes I worry that all that negative press the pageant got last year got it kicked off of Peacock, but I am sure there is more to the story than that.

I will run down each competition and how I would have scored each contestant. The MAO scoring used to be, anyway:

TALENT
It is important to note that some of the contestants announced what they would be performing, but it was not announced by the hostesses. The contestants recorded their own videos describing their talent, which was a nice touch. But some neglected to state their selections. Some I did not recognize, and I have noted that.

Group A
MO-She did a violin medley of Pachelbel’s Canon and the Europe 80s song The Final Countdown. It was an interesting blend of songs, that’s for sure. It was entertaining, although it did not blow you away. I would give it a 6.5 overall, between average and slightly above.
HI-Did you ever watch a performance where you simply did not know what to make of it? She sang and half-danced to Cabaret. At first, it was pretty cheesy. Very pageanty, sort of silly. Her singing was forgettable. And then at the end, she hit some very powerful notes and you kind of forgot that she was so forgettable. Whoever advised her on this was way off, I would say that much. She does have a good voice and probably could have sang something better. I would give it anywhere from a 5 to 7. If they were judging overall performance I would say 5. If they judged the last part of it for entertainment value I would say 7.
MO-Lyrical dance to Impossible Dream. She was very pretty, I thought. Nice movements, a beautiful sky blue costume that looked very good on her. It was a very nice, memorable performance. Probably among the better dancers of the night. I gave it a solid 7.
DC-I do not know the name of the song she danced a ballet to. What I would say is that the tempo seemed too quick for her slower performance. It just lacked energy, along with the fast tempo. It wasn’t terrible, just nothing that would have stood out. 5
SD-sang Bring Him Home. It is apparent that she has a good voice, especially for Broadway type songs. She had some pitch problems and some flat notes, but some of it was really good. It was one of those where you expected the contestant to break through and have that big performance but it did not quite work out that way. It was nice, though. I gave it a 6.5 and would have scored it higher had she not had some of the problems.
DE-Electric violin, Smooth Criminal. Her costume was cute, but it was a very amateurish performance. It wasn’t terrible by any means, just amateurish. 4-5
LA-Clogging to Blue Suede Shoes. Overall, this was a good performance. It was the kind that won talent preliminaries in the past. It was costumed well, and it had a lot of energy. Gracie does seem to be a good performer and it was very entertaining. 7.5 to 8.
ID-Played a medley of Pirates of the Caribbean on the piano. It was decent, had some good energy. 6
MD-Sang I Dreamed a Dream. It was also a decent performance, she had some nice notes. I would put her in the same category as SD. 6.5.

Group 2
AR-Tap dance to Respect. I thought it was good overall, not to the level of LA, but good enough. She did have some good moves, some good energy. I would have given in a 6.5 to 7.
IA-Sorry, I did not recognize the song. It was a show vocal. It wasn’t anything noteworthy. Usually IA sends stronger talent, but this was an off year for them. It wasn’t terrible, but she did seem to have some off notes. 5
NV-The Laughing Song. She clearly is a trained opera singer, and it was good. It wasn’t the best version I have ever heard of this song at a pageant, but she certainly stood out last night. 7.75
NH-Tap dance to Think. She seemed to be having a great time. It didn’t have the energy of some of the others, but I enjoyed her clear happiness and free spirit. 6
NE-A baton dance to Salute. This I really liked. Most baton performances are very high energy and just seem to be about the fast pace. This song had a fast tempo, but I really liked that she really danced to the whole song and did not just twirl for theatrics. Very well done, one of the top of the night for me. 7.75.
WA-Lyrical dance to Keep Bleeding Love. It was pretty, decent. I would have given in a 6.
AK-Acrobatic dance to a song something about No Regrets/I Was Here. It lacked a lot of energy, but she looked nice and it was a nice attempt. 5
OH-Classical piano piece. Etude something. I thought it was far and above, the quality of the piece was really there. Technically sound, very fast-paced and she kept up well. A reminder of talents of yesteryear. A solid 8.5 from me.
OR-Don’t Rain on My Parade. She does have a solid voice, it was a good performance. You could really hear her powerful voice towards the end. 7.5

Group 3
NM-Lyrical dance to Trans Siberian Orchestra’s Carol of the Bells. Good choice for this time of year. Her energy really did not match the dynamic pace of the song. 5
IL-violin performance, it seemed like a classical piece. It was a decent performance, had some good notes and technical skill. 6
IN-Defying Gravity. I wrote it down as “one of the better performances.” She did have a solid voice, and the overall performance was entertaining. I would have given in a 7.75 on par with someone like NE. I hate the song personally, but it is about how the performance was sold. It would have been in my top 5 for the night, so I wasn’t totally surprised at the win.
ME-for me, this was the best in this group. She sang Bohemian Rhapsody in a singer/songwriter style. She has a really strong, powerful voice. It was original and unique, combined with a great performance. I gave it a strong 7.75, I had her ahead of Indiana. I would look for NFT for this if the judges had any sense.
AL-Jazz dance to Bossa Nova (the Elvis Presley song) I liked the arrangement, it was fun. It wasn’t anything that was memorable but it was solid and entertaining. 6
VA-dance to Swan Lake, same as at Miss VA if you have seen it. It was an interesting performance. Sometimes it had a lot of energy, other times it did not. She did a costume change and changed into the Black Swan character. I would give it a 7 for originality, though sometimes the dancing did not match the tempo of the song.
CO-sang a country song, I did not recognize it. This was the weakest of the night. She was really off key and flat. 3-4
NJ-lyrical dance to “Fame” not the late and great Irene Cara’s version. It was okay, somewhat forgettable, especially for the last talent of the night. 5.5

RED CARPET

It dawned on me that everyone enjoys hearing about the evening gowns, so I will have to make a note of who wore what this week. I remember some of them, but I will make sure and make more notes on each of them. If any of you are interested in a particular contestant I can make sure and pay attention and let you know.

Red Carpet group 1
ND-She wore a paler blue long-sleeved sequin gown. Her walk and presentation wasn’t that memorable, but she was a very good speaker and answered the question well.
MA-very nice presence in a yellow gown. She also had a good, solid answer. I would give her an 8 for both.
CT-She just didn’t stand out in either category, although I do appreciate her focus on abuse.
AZ-black long-sleeved gown. She didn’t stand out in either category to me, but she did look nice.
WY-I LOVED her gown. It was unique, young, and modern. She looked really cute and I like her style. She gave a decent answer to her question. I would have given her a 6 for both, presentation and answer.
NY-One of the better gown presentations of the night, she has a lot of stage presence. Basic white gown with slits. Her answer, though, was not very good. She seemed to be caught off guard, she rambled a bit and her eyes were wide open as if she seemed a bit nervous. I would have scored her high for gown and lower for the answer.
MS-Consistent with gown and answer. She is not jumping out as extremely strong to me but she is also consistent and does seem to be one of the better ones in the group. I thought she did well enough in gown and question.
UT-One of the better presentations in the group with gown, a lovely yellow long-sleeved gown with silver accents. Her answer was decent.

Red Carpet group 2
WV-She was one of my pleasant surprises last night, and this was one of the reasons. She looked nice in her gown, and she also answered her question well.
KS-pretty gold strapless gown, she looked very nice in it, had a nice stage presence. Her answer was a bit like her SII pitch, I will address that later.
MT-her gown was very pretty, the presentation lacked energy. Her question was decent.
FL-tall and statuesque in a gold sequined gown, great walk. She had to have scored high. Her question was consistent with what said earlier. She had to be one of the better scores in this competition last night.
NC-Her gown presentation lacked energy, but the answer to her question was very solid. She was very articulate.
SC-Nice in gown, she had a strong answer. She encouraged people to take pictures of her and post them to show she was a sexual abuse survivor.
PA-Pretty in a gold, strapless sequined gown, decent presentation. Also a very good speaker, she was one of the consistent in the group last night.
CA-Nice presentation in gown, it reminded me of Crystal Lee-a basic, long-sleeved lavender gown. Her answer was very articulate. I would have put her behind FL.

Red Carpet Group 3
Overall, this was the strongest group. Lots of nice gown presentations and good answers.

RI-Very pretty in red. Good presentation in gown and she also gave a solid answer. One of the better in this group.
VT-Very pretty in an emerald gown with silver accents. She is very articulate and answered her question very well, probably the best in this group.
OK-Seriously, this is about perfection in gown. If they were giving out 10s just in presentation it would be her. She wore a simple white gown but her overall look was like an old Hollywood glamourous starlet. Her answer was decent but she was so striking in gown that you probably didn’t care what she said. Just based on look and presentation alone, she won the night.
KY-gown was good, but the answer to her question was very good, very intelligent.
TN-very nice gown presentation, her answer was good enough
MN-I love her gown, it was the same she wore to win Miss MN. Very unique apricot color with beading, very original. Her answer was good, too, very intelligent and passionate.
WI-Tall and statuesque in a white gown, presentation was decent. She reminds me a bit of Erin Andrews. Her question was answered well regarding nuclear energy.
TX-Gown was same as at Miss TX, and she has a very good presentation. She was asked about how Elon Musk was handling Twitter. She started by saying that she owned her own business and would not treat her employees like Musk did, which is very understandable. However, then she said Elon should learn how to handle a business like she did. It sounded a bit lofty and kind of self-important. It just wasn’t good, I wouldn’t have scored it well. The first part yes, I agreed with her. But the second part was just a bit off.
GA-Very pretty silver gown, nice presentation. She gave a good, solid answer. She was very consistent.

Good evening everyone!

Night 1 was a great night of competition. Reading some of the comments, it does look like there is a little bit of surprise with the preliminary winners. I wouldn't say it was a total surprise. If I was advising contestants in the future, and they are wanting to win a SII preliminary, I am telling them to get to the end of the group. I am kind of struck how much it seems like Emma's prelim win last year. She won night 1 at the end of the group speaking about a sibling with special needs. And that worked out for her very well. I am not fearlessly predicting that just yet for Hollis, but it will bode well for her being in the top 10. I will run down that in a later post.

As far as talent, the talent was not overwhelming. Only a handful were in an elite group. IN gave a spirited performance, and I think that is what contributed to her win. Plus, she went later in the group. You will see this over the years, a lot of times winners come from later in the group. Every now and then they come from earlier in the group, but a lot of times later. I thought OH had it, she was in a class by herself. She reminds me of the old pianists at Miss America. We will see what she does tomorrow night. There are a few I eliminated tonight because their talent was that weak, but I do think there are a lot of contestants in play.

I do want to mention that I have not ordered the program book, but I do not know the format for the top whatever it is. And when the announced the online voting, they did not mention if it would be a top 15 or top 10. I am guessing perhaps a top 15. I think there should be, but I digress.

The ones that really rose to the top for me tonight were the following:

MA-I am keeping a very close eye on her. It's about time for MA to have a Miss America. Katrina has great stage presence and stands out from a crowd. She has an it factor and speaks very well. I already have her in my top 10 and am looking forward to her talent.

FL-Her talent is weaker, but she does have a strong presence about her. She is at least in my top 10, I am not sure what her talent will do.

My pleasant surprises of the night were the Ws-West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. I thought WV was natural, spoke well, and just had something very likeable about her. She might be one that sneaks into the top 10. WI was a very good speaker and she had to have scored well tonight. WY is absolutely adorable-fresh, young, unique, and I loved her gown.

Overall, the talent that we knew is a thing of the past, and there were only a handful tonight that were wow factor, but that is the new normal now. I think SII is more of a regular competition now and you are seeing it more competitive.

A full rundown tomorrow! Look around 2 p.m. EST.

Until then, good sleeping!

Happy Sunday everyone!

It is hard to believe, but it is Miss America time. The board is cleaned up here, and time for some commentary! I will be posting live during the preliminaries with all talent selections listed either live or the next day. Sometimes it goes very quickly with these preliminaries because there are no breaks in between. That is especially true of the SII rounds, they just move from one to the next.

This is the first year EVER I think that I will not be able to see the pageant live. I will be home around 10 p.m. EST and will start watching then. I am in charge of our work party and there is no getting out of it. Of course, if we had Miss America in AC in September this wouldn't be a problem. So it's not my fault. ;)

As far as my predictions-I do know who I saw during the state pageant season, and I still think Avery Bishop is one to keep an eye on. One thing about her that I found out, accidentally I might add, is that she does ASMR videos. She has a strong online presence. We are officially off the air now so it doesn't matter about "growing the brand." That ship has sailed. I am also keeping my eye on NY. I know, I say it every year, but this year Taryn is very young, modern, and she seems exactly what a modern Miss America would be like.

Of some of the other pageants I have seen, I believe OK is a strong lock for the top 10 and possibly top 5. She is very well-rounded and this is Oklahoma, after all. I believe AR might be back in the top 15 after a few years absence. FL I would base on state reputation, it's hard to say. VA-yes, I believe she will be there in the top 15 as well. But just keeping it real-I rarely say this about a Miss VA, but she has something off-putting about her. She's not very humble or gracious, she has an air about her.

In some of the other states, I hear that OH is the daughter of one of the Farrell sisters. I liked all of them from over the years, so it will be nice to see her. I understand she is quite talented. CA-even though you broke my heart judges (!) it does seem like she is a strong contestant and I would love for CA to finally have a Miss America again. They are well overdue.

It's hard to predict anymore because everything is so random and the judging criterion so confusing, but we'll see what happens. There is a lot, as always, that we don't know. An Emma or Cara could come up and upend everything.

But, we'll find out starting soon! Please post your predictions, let us know about your state and why she is worthy of the title of Miss America.

I will post as much as possible as the night goes along. I am going to write down all the individual talent selections and probably post them tomorrow.

One thing about these preliminaries is that they are very rushed. They can quickly move from one competition to the next without warning. BUT I will be posting a more complete synopsis tomorrow and Wednesday.

Please do follow along as I post live! I love posting live, and it should give you some good insight. I also will let you know who stands out in each group.

I LOVE Vermont. Tough competition tonight! I think KS is a serious contender for the crown. TX, NM, and IL all looking strong. OH was kind of meh for me and then she just completely OWNED that stage. OWNED.

NH is doing well tonight, wouldn't be surprised to see her in the top 5. They have a lot of great choices this year. I wasn't thrilled about the production at the beginning but this is quite a competitive year.

Happy Thursday everyone!

Hopefully you are staying cool where you are. We might hit 100 today in my nifty corner of the country. It is already heating up, yuck!

Very sadly, this news came out that one of the longest running soap operas of all time, Days of Our Lives, is moving to Peacock:
https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/03/entertainment/days-of-our-lives-peacock-streaming/index.html

I know a lot of us felt like it was the end of an era for Miss America and believe me, it was. But other beloved TV institutions like soap operas are being dumped as well. They're just going to streaming services quietly to die. I have seen some commentary from longtime viewers who might not get Peacock, this is an older show with likely viewers in their 60s and beyond who really do not do streaming services.

Is this another sign of the times that some of our past TV icons are just going to streaming to die a slow death? I watched Days from the time I was around 10 until that nonsense with Marlena being demon possessed. LOL I wondered where the hell my mind was and I couldn't do it anymore.

But to me, this is a very sad state of affairs. Peacock is rather boring. Their original programming is not like Netflix or Hulu where it brings new viewers in.
