SALE PRODUCTS
WHY SHOP WITH CHARCOAL Inc
Since 2005 Charcoal Inc. has been leading the way for the distribution and consumption of firewood across the United States. Our mission is simple, to offer the highest quality firewood products, the most competitive prices and outstanding customer service. We are also passionate about our trade as all of our fuel products are sourced responsibly and our team of experts thoroughly examines the quality to ensure that it is to the highest grade. Everyday we delivery firewood, kindling and biomass to homes and businesses in the USA and we take great pride in our companies effectiveness to keep America warm. Feel free to browse our website or get in touch to speak with a firewood and fuel specialist.

For many families, the fireplace is the centerpiece of the home during the winter. Many families love to sit around the fire when they are spending a relaxing evening at home watching movies, playing games, or wrapping presents for the holiday season. Our premium quality firewood logs are a simple and stylish way to keep your home warm and create the perfect family atmosphere. Real harwood logs are a better alternative than the manufactured logs that you will often find for sale in local shops, petrol stations and garden centres. First, they give off more heat than manufactured logs, which tend to burn more like a candle than a warming fire, due to the fact that they are largely made of wax. In addition, manufactured logs tend to produce more soot than real firewood, which makes your fireplace harder to clean. In addition to keeping your home warm during the winter, our real firewood logs are also a great option for camping trips or for bonfires in your back garden. Because we offer firewood in bulk, you will never have to go searching for wood for your fire again. Instead, you can stock up on our hardwood logs, stack them up in your garden and grab from the pile whenever you need to warm the home. If you spend less time searching for firewood, then you can spend more time having fun around the fire. We offer a variety of log types to our customers, including hardwood oak firewood, and ash firewood. You can buy firewood in nets, half pallets, and full pallets.

Our kiln dried firewood come in bulk, which means that you get the best value for your money. You can purchase anywhere from 16 to 72 nets and we offer bigger discounts on the larger purchases, sometimes savings of up to 38 percent. The more firewood logs you buy, the more money you save. Ordering firewood from our website is quick and easy, and delivery is simple and painless. You can choose any day of the week for your firewood delivery, and we will drop your order off right at your doorstep. You can even choose to opt out of a signature, in case you will not be home when your firewood is delivered. The best part is that delivery is free in the USA and at a small fee for the highlights of Scotland and other remote areas. Whether you need firewood for a relaxing evening around the fireplace or for a fun night around a campfire, Charcoal Inc. is the perfect way to stock up on firewood for any occasion.

My condolences to Hilary Levey Friedman and to all of the family, friends, and those who loved Pam Eldred, Miss America 1970. Here is a lovely write-up about Pam:

https://www.nj.com/entertainment/2022/07/former-miss-america-pamela-eldred-robbins-dead-at-74.html

The author Frank DeFord, in his book "There She Is, The Life and Times of Miss America" also wrote a lot of positive things about Pam. It is a great read and can be found on sites like Ebay.

I have read Hilary's books and I highly recommend her latest book Here She Is, in which she gives a thorough look back at the evolution of pageants throughout the United States. Very fascinating read for everyone who loves pageants. IMO, Hilary is one of our best advocates for the MAO.

Casey Close is Gretchen Carlson's husband. He is a sports agent in the middle of a media storm because his client, former Atlanta Braves Freddie Freeman, was purportedly not given a final contract by Close. Freeman is an immensely talented player from the Braves who was seemingly their franchise player and did not want to leave. He ended up leaving for the Dodgers but wanted to remain a Brave.

The moral of the story: Anyone associated with Gretchen Carlson can make a mess of beloved institutions.

It's been a fun couple of nights of preliminaries. This is the first time I have ever got to see live from start to finish a Miss Texas pageant. It is always, IMO, one of the higher profile pageants because generally speaking, the winner goes onto the top 10 at Miss America. There are times where IMO (like last year) where they end up there based on state reputation and nothing more. But from what I am seeing this week, it is this-they have more than one contestant who is ready to compete at Miss America that very day if the pageant was being held. Same with Oklahoma. Then there are the states who clearly have one strong candidate to win and that person might have potential at Miss America but needs the tailoring that their state cannot seem to provide for them. Texas in particular does not have that problem. And it is hard to argue that Texas does not have success with their track record at Miss America. What they are doing does not need to be fixed. That is unless you want to have a Miss America. They haven't had a Miss America since one month after Richard Nixon was removed from office. That's a long time.

One thing I see about Texas is that despite the "type" they seem to consistently send each year, there is a lot of diversity among the kinds of contestants. Not everyone fits the mold that you see make it to Miss America. It is nice to see, quite frankly. I know that they probably do not feel the need to fix what is not broke, so I think that is why you see basically the same types of contestants succeed. The only exception was Chandler Foreman. I had no strong opinions about her either way at Miss America, but I know that she seemed to rub people the wrong way. At first I attributed it to that she wasn't a typical Miss Texas and had what seemed to be a strong personality. But this week during the preliminaries, she did something which rubbed me the wrong way. When she was doing OSQ, a contestant very nicely complimented her on her dress. Instead of answering back graciously, she snapped at the contestant, "Don't make this about me. Go over there an answer your question." It was very rude and I noticed that after that, no other contestant would engage with her. Then she seemed to be eating or getting done eating when she was asked to come out onstage the next night. So, just after a few nights I get why she might not have been a popular choice.

This week of competition has been very interesting in that you have three double preliminary winners. It is not unusual at all to see 2 double preliminary winners, but I cannot seem to remember a time with three of them. Having seen all three nights, I would say with the exception of Matlock winning red carpet (I had 3 ahead of her) the judging was correct. They did stand out in their individual groups. South Lake was FANTASTIC at That's Life. It is a sort of safe and boring song and she sang it like she was selling it to us the first time. I loved it. And she looked great in an evening gown. Carrollton also looked great in an evening gown and her talent was strong. I had a few ahead of Southeast TX in Red Carpet but she didn't have much competition in her preliminary group for talent and we already knew the judges liked her. So, you are going to have these three potentially competing for the win. Of the non-preliminary winners, I thought Park Cities was very strong across the board. I was surprised that she did not win a preliminary, at least in Red Carpet. Dallas has also been strong, although she seemed to come back to life a bit in talent. She was very endearing during her Red Carpet time with her princesses. One seemed to be only a toddler and was wandering around a bit like she was confused. She picked her up and carried her very kindly in her arms, which was very sweet. She looked like a caring, nurturing mother. I would caution everyone tonight that with the judges being aware that there are three double preliminary winners that they may want their favorite to win and they may end up tanking some of the others. So, if the results seem weird tonight, it may be why. They could end up canceling each other out and a non-preliminary winner could win. Here are my top 15 after preliminaries:

Border City
Carrollton
Dallas
DFW
Fort Worth
Frisco
Grapevine
Keller
Lone Star
North Texas
Park Cities
Piney Woods
Southeast TX
South Lake
Space City

As to who wins tonight? Conventional choice says that it was one of the preliminary winners. If not, my money would be on Park Cities. But I still think that even despite me not wanting another Matlock win, she is going to be a Miss Texas, there is no doubt about that. She has quickly figured out what it takes to be successful, and she is extremely confident. I do not like that there are two former Miss Texases on the panel that is judging a former's relative, either. But right now, nothing is going to change that fact and if she competes in future years I think they need to carefully consider that. And knowing Miss America, she would go on to succeed at Miss America. Same for South Lake. I find her to be be bit more down-to-earth and has an energy that draws you to her. Yes, she is conventional Miss Texas, but she has an engaging quality about her. I also see her top 10 at Miss America. But there is something next level about Avery Bishop. She has a distinct energy that absolutely draws you in. She is not a conventional Miss Texas, and I think that would work in her favor. She isn't like Chandler Foreman, Avery has the competitive edge-she is strong in talent, gown, and I saw her interview from last year. She can interview well. But she has a personal quality that I have seen in a lot of Miss Americas that I think Texas should not pass up.

Come on Texas. Do at least one thing to get your state out of the 1970s. If Texas really wants another Miss America, Avery Bishop needs to go to Miss America.

It seems like the night 2 preliminaries were not recorded, so I can only do nights 1 and 3. It was a busy night, they announced the new executive directors of Miss TN Volunteer, the Sparks family. They took over the Alderson duties, but Jane also got a legacy award. They had the same hostesses, and Alexa also made an appearance. She is going to work with autistic children at Vanderbilt University Hospital, which I think is very touching. Great representative for the program.

The competition was every bit as good in SS and gown, but the talent went down a bit. Swimsuit was really competitive. In SS, I had Queen City, Hack City (I still do not know how to spell that) Madison County, Memphis and TN Valley at the top, they all had great presentations. Talent was not too many pickings for the win. I thought possibly Nashville, she had a decent voice but the performance wasn't great. Paris sang decently as well, I had those two the highest. Evening gown was also very strong. Leading that I had Humboldt in a pretty blue gown, Knoxville, who looked very red carpet and Delta Blues looked very good as well. But they all did, it was a great competition. Very glamorous!

Since I will be watching the conclusion TX prelims tomorrow night, I will watch the final night on Friday night and post then. Just pretending like this didn't happen yet, I am going to comment on what I think might happen. Anyone who has followed the program in TN over the last 15 years or so know that it is a pay your dues/wait until your time comes around state. The heir apparent is Noelle Thompson or possibly Katie Hodges and from what I have seen, they are both there to win. However, I see some other possibilities. I didn't get to see night 2 which is unfortunate, but I think some other contestants like Knoxville and Memphis have been coming on strong.

Here is my top 15 based on the 2 nights:

Queen City
Knoxville
Jackson
Lane College
TN Soybean Festival
Memphis
TN Valley
Nashville
Huck City
Delta Blues
Davidson County (only to15)
Paris
Shelby County
Tristar

I will find out soon enough!

Chelsea Vuong and Elizabeth Sartuche are both vying for the title of Miss California this weekend. Both AMAZING young women who would be perfect for the title of Miss California. I think, sadly, they are both in their last years of eligibility. So, one of these two lovely women are not going to be able to win. What is so great now is that it is not the end of the road for great contestants like these. There is now Miss Volunteer America and they can still compete and likely do very well there.

California is always one of my favorite state pageants because of the quality of their contestants. Very rarely do I not appreciate a Miss California. And here is a shoutout to the amazing women who never quite clinched the state title but would have otherwise been very worthy:

Angel Blue
Cheri Gorin
Megan Lyne
Izamar Olaquez
Jane Kennedy

Jane Kennedy in particular was the one that got away. She had Miss America written all over her. I think she is now too old for Volunteer but she was damned near perfection, especially in gown. Now if you have been reading this board for quite some time you all know I love me some Eileen Kim and was thrilled that she won. But there are always the ones that cannot, there can only be one winner.

Looking forward to a great contest on Saturday night

Hello!

If you are careful like I am, you can avoid spoilers and go back and watch pageants. I missed TN Volunteer until I saw it was live Saturday night, so I went back last night and started watching. I will watch each night like I usually do and pretend it is just a different day of the week lol.

First of all, the TN Volunteer pageant would put Miss America to shame. Their production is quite frankly, fantastic. They have an elaborate stage with a ramp where the contestants can walk down during evening gown. The stage is very professional, and they have live music. Not the old tacky kind, this music is modern and they have an electric guitar player, for example. They have an announcer, they have the contestants introducing themselves and talking about their talents. It is so well done. I feel like I am watching a national pageant. Amelia has been incorporated very well into the production numbers and they are taking full advantage of her talents. There are still the princess numbers but even they are a bit more subdued. And everything is running right on schedule, not a lot of fluff.

Of note: Allison did not host night 1. Someone by the last name of Alastair hosted, she is from the Criminal Bureau of Investigation and a journalist. I thought she was very professional and did a good job. Kerri Arnold is co-hosting and doing a very good job as well. They had her out in the audience as she was introducing talent. I cannot stress this enough-without Jay and his antics, the show is running much smoother. It was actually nice not to have to deal with that. I realize he comes with the price of admission, sort to speak, but believe me, his antics get old. None of that, at least for night 1.

Now, down to the competition:

SS-I had Scenic City, Nashville or Jackson as the potential winners. They all really stood out to me.

Talent-You can tell that Volunteer is getting a good reputation and attracting quality contestants, because something happened along the way. They actually got talent! There were only a few of the historically bad talents that TN is known for. The rest were on par with what I have been seeing at MAO state pageants so far. To me, the best were TN Soybean Festival, who did a speed painting of Prince to Prince's music. I thought she was really entertaining with it. She matched the energy of the music without standing around to grin at the audience every few seconds, and her costume, everything worked. Then came Lane College and she has a very good voice, she sang "I'm Here" from The Color Purple. Very good vocalist. The other top I had was Knoxville, she did a very energetic clogging routine to a country music song. Any of those three would have won preliminary talent in my book. Some of the other vocalists were decent, too. I must say, I was very impressed with the improvement of the level of talent.

EG-I thought that Huck (Sp?) city and TN Valley were the standouts in gown, although Noelle Thompson was introduced with the incorrect title and she was first, she looked good as well. I would think they all scored very high.

Nashville won SS and Lane College won talent, both right on target and very well-deserved.

There are a lot of younger contestants this year and not too many returnees. Noelle Thomspon is back and she has to be considered a front-runner. Katie Hodges is back, as is I think her name is Kunis or Rumis. I also think Kailey Duffy competed before. Otherwise a lot of new faces, which is good.

Overall, it was a FIRST RATE PRODUCTION and I can't wait to see more!

Happy Super Saturday in the MAO! There are 13 pageants..err
"competitions" happening tonight. I have several to choose from on Pageants Live, but I thought the best to choose would be Miss Missouri. The others are Arkansas and Louisiana. In the past 4 pageants (17, 18, 29, and 21) Missouri has had the first runner-up and second runner-up. So, I figured this might be a fun one to watch to see who does well. We might need to pay attention to the winner.

Best of luck to all of the lovely women who will be competing tonight, and I am looking forward to meeting more members of the class of 2022.

Ashleigh Robinson is such a lovely young woman. I had her in my top 15 at Miss America and still am not sure why she wasn't there. Even this week, she proved what a genuine and caring young woman she is. She was delightful with her stars (or whatever you call the children princesses in OK) and she just exudes a lot of love and good energy. There is no doubt in my mind how many young people's lives she will continue to touch as a teacher. Best of luck to Ashleigh as she continues on her journey as a forever Miss Oklahoma.

Happy Saturday everyone!

I have enjoyed the Miss Oklahoma preliminaries this week. It is the first time I got the opportunity to see their full preliminaries, and they put on a first rate production. Susan Powell is a bit obnoxious, and she was making all sort of weird comments on Thursday night especially. But they do put on a good show and it is very well done. I am looking forward to tonight.

Based on preliminaries, it looks like a showdown between Bricktown and Tulsa. I get Megan Gold-she has an amazing stage presence and she really, truly stands out from the crowd. She is absolutely ready for Miss America and I could see her doing very well there. In fact, I could see even a top 5 for her. As far as Emily Faith, I will be honest-I am just not getting it. I really didn't have her anywhere near the preliminary talent winner, and I thought that several others outperformed her in gown. But the judges obviously are in love with her. Based on her onstage questioning, she used a lot of pause breakers like "uh" and "um" and she doesn't seem to be a seasoned speaker. But again, the judges do not seem to care. Through looking at some of the posts about her, she was a contestant on American Idol. It does seem like she discussed her musical aspirations in her private interview, and I am wondering if that is what the judges are responding to. Is it like Jasmine Murray or Ariana Afsar 2.0? The thing is, American Idol is nowhere near the juggernaut it was even 10 years ago. Both of them had a history in the program, however. I would say maybe if Emily stuck with it a few years and became more seasoned that she would be a strong enough winner to be Miss Oklahoma. I just really do not see it right now. I think Megan Gold is perfect for the role this year. Full disclosure: like most states, I have very little or no idea of who is competing anymore. This is just an outsider's opinion of what I have seen this week. I know nothing about who is returning this year, who did what in previous years.

I think there were some strong representatives that I expect to do well tonight, particularly Edmond and Tulsa State Fair. I also like Collinsville, thought she did well. I also liked Queen of the West all week, she reminds me like she could do well tonight if all came together for her.

I am looking forward to seeing how it all shakes out, so tune in for live commentary!

Happy Mother’s Day to all! Whether you are a mom, or celebrating your mom, I hope you are all having a blessed day. I trust that we are all still having a pageant hangover today. From the comments I have been seeing, the Miss Volunteer Pageant was a big hit. It seems like a lot of people agreed, including myself, that the production was great, it was well done, and exactly what we having been looking forward to for so long. Let’s face it-we haven’t had this kind of pageant for almost 5 years. 2017 was the last Miss America pageant to feature a traditional competition as we have known. There was glamour, tradition, and great women, what more can you ask for? Here’s my full rundown:

TOP 15 ANNOUNCEMENT
I had 10 of the top 15 in my own prediction list. The rest came from the unlikely but not totally surprised to see them there, including AL and AR especially. I wasn’t totally surprised to see FL more than AL or AR. IN wasn’t a total surprise, either. People’s Choice just that-I didn’t have KS there but at least there is that option for someone to get one more chance to compete. I was really, really shocked that New Hampshire was not there, especially seeing how weaker some of the talent performances were who were there. And she looked great in gown and SS. That will always be one of the headscratchers for me in my pageantdom, but I am assuming she probably didn’t have the interview scores. Everything else was there. I wasn’t totally surprised that HI was not there, either. I thought she did well all week but I would say that I have seen many Miss Hawaiis in the MAO who had the same kind of personality that did not advance. I wish they would, but I am not judging, either.

TOP 16 SWIMSUIT
All in all, I thought it was a great competition. I said it during the week and will say it again-these contestants came ready. They looked fantastic, I thought. There really wasn’t a bad one in the whole group, although I thought AR wasn’t as toned as some of the others. I had her out because of that, I thought the judges were going to have to split hairs. I think it came down to presentation. Even though I loved RI, I thought she didn’t have as much presence during the competition and that she would also be eliminated. I kind of thought KS might last another round because she had a good presentation, better than some of the others. I had out AR, AL, RI and possibly TX after that round. I would have NEVER guessed that OK did not make it through to the next round. She, along with NH, had a great week all week and did well in the SS round. I had her, in the top 5 in that competition. I guess she just didn’t have the interview or composite points, I was just very surprised. And also surprised that AL and AR made it through as well. TX and FL I wasn’t totally surprised that they did not advance; FL based on her overall performance during the week and TX was kind of reserved in her presentation. Although, I did think that FL performed well enough in SS to make it through to the next round.

TOP 12 TALENT
Some of the contestants upped their game from preliminaries, and NJ started off by doing so. She was very energetic, animated, and made a strong case for herself. She set the bar very high, I thought. NY seemed a little more reserved in her presentation from preliminaries but I still think she did a decent job. LA did about the same as in preliminaries, she had a lot of energy about her performance. IN was solid and she has a great voice. I think she picked a great song which highlighted her strengths, she did plenty enough at that time to advance to the top 10. She also reminded me of our dearly departed Leanza Cornett with long hair. GA actually seemed to sing a bit better than in preliminaries as well, she does have some problems hitting high notes sometimes, but it was certainly good enough. SC doesn’t seem to have a good high range though I thought it was passable. TN was good as she was on her preliminary night, though I thought she didn’t quite have the energy level at the beginning of the song. AL good lord, all that was missing was sparklers. She did have a few decent gymnastic moves but it was just so old school pageant cheese that it was hard to take it seriously. AR was about the same as in the preliminary-off key a bit and couldn’t hit the high notes. I just did not think she had the kind of voice that could pull that song off. RI was good as she was in preliminaries-a very solid performance from her. UT-this is where I think she scored high, the dance was very lovely indeed. You could tell she had some serious dance training, I found her very lovely to watch. MS was good enough in prelims but I think she turned it up a bit last night and would certainly have had no questions about the performance. I thought NJ and TN were the best in talent and would have had UT and RI behind them. I thought AR had to be out by that performance. I had AL advancing instead of RI because she seemed so unlikely in the first place I figured she was resonating with the judges. Everyone else I had going forward, and I was very happy I was wrong. I really liked RI, she was one of my favorites throughout this whole competition.

TOP 10 EVENING GOWN
First of all, PROPS PROPS PROPS for that fantastic evening gown presentation. I know some people go back to the Lady in Red production in 1989 at Miss America a lot. Everybody LOVES gown presentations! The contestants appeared to be grouped with the color of their gowns and it was just regal, classy, and got a chance for all the contestants to have their moment and celebrate their glamour and class. After all that work to get there, it is just nice to have your moment to feel like a queen, and I am sure they did. Very well done. I thought the whole competition was pure class. For me, SC led off very strongly and was probably my top pick in that group, but they all looked great. Once again, it came down to presentation for me. Besides SC I had NY solidly at the top, and I thought LA, TN, and GA were all very strong in gown as well. But who didn’t look great and rock it?

By that time, it was hard for me to narrow it down. I was actually thinking SC might have won. She was having a very solid night, but truthfully, nobody was standing out for me as the clear winner. And that it made it even more suspenseful. I thought that NY did enough to get into the top 5. I appreciated that montage from interviews and from what I could tell, they featured every single contestant. I thought that was a great added touch because each contestant got their time in the sun, even if for a few seconds. And I liked NY’s answer. A lot of what I did see was that the contestants are going to have to have a vision and clear plan about how to market the program. After I saw that, I knew that whoever presented themselves the best in that line of interview was going to excel (see MS in the final round.) I also had TN and MS based on their competition all night and finally GA because I still think she stood out among the crowd. I had to eliminate ones who I really liked, including RI and LA because I think they didn’t stand out as much. I did not have NJ or UT in but was glad to see them nonetheless. UT I really didn’t understand but I certainly did with NJ. She was having a great night and really turned it up. I love when contestants do that. She had done well all week but everything she did last night she really put on the exclamation point. She wanted It.

ONSTAGE QUESTION
Overall, I think all five answered relatively well. One thing I appreciated about this round is not having to be cut off with the chimes. Even though it does open up to some rambling, it still allows for complete thought. I thought SC did a good enough job of answering her question. She got a little rambly but I also think that it seemed easier than the others. It wasn’t controversial in any way. I was hoping they were going to stay away from the landmine of this week with any abortion questions. I didn’t think they were going to, but I think NJ had a very difficult answer. Now, to be as constructive as possible, she was asked about how she would handle herself if someone disagreed about vaccinations. She gave her opinion instead on vaccinations and how she would remind someone that it was good to follow the recommendations. She also, and I thought this was very wise, tied it into her platform and mentioned mental health. She was correct about that, that people are having mental health issues. At very least, this moved her up to around 2nd runner-up in my opinion. TN I thought answered well enough as well. MS was asked about diversity and how they would implement a program throughout the Volunteer system. She wisely turned it back to what I heard in the interview questions and discussed growing the program at the local level. However, I am not sure she really addressed the actual question sort of like NJ. UT also had a question which was more difficult but I can’t remember exactly what it was. I do think that she gave a comparable answer. I thought that it was down to MS and TN and that MS would win and TN would be 1st runner up as to avoid any controversy. I had them like this:
4th runner-up UT
3rd runner-up SC
2nd runner-up NJ
1st runner-up TN
MVA-MS
Utah was not on my radar much last night other than the top 10 and she definitely deserved it. She was consistent across the week and did well last night. I didn’t have her in the top 5 and when she was, I didn’t think she stood out. Some of the others did much more. I thought SC might have won at one point during the night but I felt like overall, the competition was MS or TN’s to lose.
PROPS PROPS PROPS for making the show about the contestants. It was nice to have the teen winner perform a full talent, and it was great to have the NFT winner, Miss New Hampshire, perform again. How often does that happen? And here’s the best part of the night. It was announced that there was a certified nurse practitioner there during the week to monitor the contestants’ physical and emotional health. That is SO important and especially in light of what happened to Cheslie Kryst, this is the first time I have ever heard anything mentioned like that. I think it is very important to attend to the needs of the contestants, and that is something that cannot be ignored. Really, of the many good things to come out of this week, that was something that really resonated with me. The contestants need to make sure THEIR physical and mental health was addressed.

When they started with the announcements, I wasn’t too surprised as SC but I was surprised at TN. I thought she did much better in the competition. After she was eliminated, I thought it was going to be MS. Then I was REALLY surprised! When it was the last 2 standing, I really thought Natalie had won. I thought that she probably solidified her win with her onstage question, it was very well-spoken. I figured UT just kind of snuck into 1st runner-up. When she was called, I was a bit surprised. I was sad that Natalie got that close to a national title but I knew she couldn’t have done anything more. I do like the new MVA. She reminds me of one of my favorite Miss Michigans, Stacy Essebaggers. For those of you who do not remember, or may not have even been alive in 2001, but she injured her ankle and went out afterwards and did her preliminary talent, which was clogging. She made the top 10 that year. You could tell she was in pain when she was dancing but she continued on like a pro. I am in no way dissatisfied; just because I was surprised does not mean I was dissatisfied. Overall, it was a great group of contestants and whoever won would be a credible winner. Even though there were some judging decisions I questioned, I think it was a great, well-rounded top 10 and nobody was a head-scratcher. It was a great competition from start to finish and I have to say this. I am in awe that 3 years ago this was merely a possibility and this past week an entire pageant system was born, birthed, and had a grand first year. I am going to post a separate post about it later, but MVA is here to stay. I think after this year they will be able to recruit more, even in the states which did not send a representative this year. There is only room to grow.

WELL DONE EVERYONE. WELL DONE.

It has been a fantastic week of competition. This is the good old-fashioned pageant that we have been looking for. Talent, swimsuit, and evening gown, no gotcha questions, no rambling on about platforms like a boardroom meeting. I commend everyone at the Miss Volunteer America pageant and the system which was created. I will post more about the positive way I see this organization going in another post, but first I wanted to give an overall picture of the week and my predictions.
It is hard to judge “what” the judges are looking for, but I would say I did not disagree with any of the preliminary winners. All were very deserving. The weakest one was GA but it was a weak night in that group. And I do not disagree with her win, I just thought IN was better but again, it was a weak group. Two of the three preliminary winners were dancers, one vocalist. The swimsuit winners were absolutely right on target. There is a double preliminary winner with TN and she is a fierce competitor. There are other non-preliminary winners who have had good weeks and they must also be considered. I think we are all challenged right now to want to compare this to the MAO, but we really cannot do that. It is a totally different system and one which we never saw before in competition. So, it is hard to say what they are looking for. And let’s face it-“what” they are looking for at Miss America changes from year to year and nobody fits into a particular mold. Of late especially, judges are seeming to crown who they fall in love with, which is the case with Emma Broyles, Cara Mund, and some of the others. When it comes down to it, you always have to answer this question no matter which system it is: who is standing out?
Right now for me, TN is probably the strongest “competitor.” She is at the top of the preliminary judges list in her group and I had her very high in EG only behind SC. And that’s just preference. She has to be considered a or the frontrunner right now. Me personally, I would not have a problem if she won. She is a very strong competitor and if this was run by someone else, it would almost be a crime if she did not win. However, for the sake of the program, it cannot happen. It would look bad because she was personally trained by the executive director of the whole program. Even if this were years down the road it would still not be a good look. Some people still talk about the Shindles 25 years later And from a state standpoint or competitor standpoint, I would feel very skeptical to compete in such a system. I am not sure how this will be handled but this would blow up big time. Again, I do not have a problem with it but I absolutely see the problem from the outside looking in. And let’s not forget, there are 50 other competitors who had strong weeks.
I hate to start with the negative, but I work my way up to the top. Here are the contestants who I unquestioningly do not see advancing to the top 15: AK, AZ, ID, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, MT, NV, NM, OH, SD, VA and WY.
Just a note: I really like some in this group, including MN. She has gorgeous eyes and is very pretty, I would love to see her in another system someday.
The next group where I really do not think they will advance but not totally off my radar is: AL, AR, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, IN, IA, KS, NC, OR
A couple of notables or ones I had comments about:
AL-She is from a state which enjoys success in all systems. She has been decent but she just doesn’t stand out in a group. Plus, her talent was really old school pageant cheesy. The only reason I have her is because she is Miss Alabama and that goes a long way.
CA-I think she is really cute and I still like her despite just seeming to lack polish this week. I think had she learned to pull herself together and get a bit more “fierce” rather than silly in talent and over the top in swimsuit, she might have gone a long way. But her overall presentation this week has been way off.
FL-Follow my reasoning here: I think if she had won SS last night I would have put her into the top 15 but it was totally hinging on that. She did well in SS and I thought she looked good in gown too, but she has really weak talent. And she kind of blends in otherwise. I think she needed to do something like win a preliminary to stand out, and she just did not.
IA-She has been one of my favorites this week, really cute, really natural. Even though it was definitely old school pageanty she made a way to make it new. She has an impressive academic resume as well. I just do not think she separated herself and others performed a lot better. But I still really like her.
NC-She is another one who did not quite stand out from the crowd this week, but I really like her. Everything she did she had a beautiful smile on her face, I loved her in evening gown, and she’s a very pretty girl. I gotta say, you grow em right in NC. I absolutely loved Ashlen Batson at MAO this past year, Michelle Warren is still my goddess, I loved Kelley Bradshaw and Kirstin Elrod, and the list goes on.
My in between contestants who I could see it going either way for are: IL, KY, and WA. Some that I am going to mention will be at the end of the category after I have my firm predictions but these three I have to put in the “I wouldn’t be surprised either way.” They could totally miss it or totally be in the top 15, though I wouldn’t really have them cracking the top 10. IL had a decent week and was consistent enough, though not totally strong. KY was also the same way and her talent was unique. WA was also the same way and she’s really cute, it could take her a long way.
Who I have in my top 15:

FIRMLY
GA-With her talent win and strong presentations in SS and EG, she is a lock for me. Depending on how she does, maybe top 5. I do not see her as the winner, though. Even though she is a good competitor I do not think she has the “it” factor.
HI-At very least I have her in the top 15 after her win last night. For me personally, she has exuded something which a lot of the contestants do not. She exudes a warmth, a welcoming personality, and something that draws you to her. I thought she was consistent in evening gown. Her talent was hula and you really cannot judge a hula to be in a poor category. It’s beautiful, I know we have all seen it many times before. But guess what? Not everyone can do it. Just because it is something that a lot of girls and women in HI learn does not mean that everyone can do it, and should be judged appropriately. I could realistically see her maybe only making the top 15 and not advancing or she could be one that goes really far depending on how the judges connect with her. She’s one of my wild cards, but firmly in the 15.
LA-I really cannot figure out how she never won Louisiana. She’s a National Sweetheart for chrissakes. Kaitryana has had a good, consistent week, particularly strong in SS and EG. Her talent was certainly passable. She really is striking onstage and a strong competitor overall.
MS-Preliminary SS winner which was well deserved, played Malaguena good enough to keep her in contention, strong in evening gown. She to me is the kind of classic Miss Mississippi who we came to know over the years at MAO who does very well. I will comment more about her a little later.
NH-You want to talk about “total package”-she has it all. She is a beautiful girl, looked great in a swimsuit and evening gown, and has the talent to back that all up. She was my “dark horse” all week until she became a bona fide contender with her talent win last night. More on her later.
NJ-She has been very consistent across the week. She’s another one this week who I can never figure out how she did not win her state, although NJ has become more competitive these last few years. Anyway, she is not the strongest across the board but she is certainly good in all phases of competition and I really could see a top 10 for her.
NY-She absolutely solidified a spot in the top 10 after last night for me. Jordan is well-rounded, very strong in SS and EG and while not over the moon in talent, certainly gave a good performance which played to her strengths. I do not necessarily have her as the next MVA but definitely top 5 and maybe even top 5 if all goes well. I am not sure she has enough of the it factor to win but a good competitor nonetheless.
OK-Strong in talent, preliminary SS winner and top of the group in EG as well. She is another total package, and she also has the face to boot. To me, she is one of the prettiest contestants this year. More on her a little later.
SC-Very strong in EG, strong in SS and held her own in talent. She started off well but like some of the others had trouble in the high range. She is certainly strong enough for a top 10 finish. Also one of the faces of the pageant.
TN-An extremely strong competitor. It is like I said above-if this were another system it would be a crime for her not to win. She needs to RUN to USA after this is over because she has a look that would resonate at Miss Universe.
The rest of the top 15 would come out of:
NE-Much like the others I have mentioned, she has been consistent, and you take notice of her. She had a strong competition in talent, and she looked good in a SS and EG as well. NE is showing signs of life in different pageant systems and I would say the same here. I don’t know that I would put her past the top 15 perhaps or maybe higher than 8th or so but I think a top 15 is warranted.
PA-She was consistent all week, beginning with a very solid piano performance the first night. She may not jump out at you but she does have something that you remember her. I think she has done well enough all week to crack the top 15.
RI-Another strong pianist and she has been good in SS and EG gown as well. She looks nice onstage and has a natural confidence about her. She was consistent across the week and I would not be surprised to see her.
TX-Since she is TX it is almost a shoe-in for her. She is really cute, everything you would expect a Miss TX to be. I am not sure that she has enough of the it factor, but she was good enough in everything to expect to see her. I think she is really cute. I know TX is a tough state to win for many systems but I am glad we got to know her here in Volunteer. I think she would do great in MAO as well.
UT-She’s one where I almost am assured she would get a top 15 spot. She has been consistent across the board all week, very cute, very natural and confident. She has stood out to me all week and I like what she does onstage. She always has a smile on her face and draws you into her.
WA-She is somewhat like UT in that she always tends to be smiling, having fun, and has a spark about her. I am not sure that she was as strong as UT or some of the others across the board but could be in the top 15.
WI-She has something very cute and natural about her, always has a smile on her face. I loved her talent, from the costuming to her performance. She was good in SS and EG. Maybe not at the top of the group, but consistent. There’s a down-to-earth likeability about her that may resonate well with the judges.

Now, where do I think this is headed, and who do I think is going to win?

With any pageant that has preliminary winners, you are going to see a distribution of them across the top 15. Every now and then one does not make it in, it may happen here, who knows? If that is the case it could be HI, it really depends on how she resonates with the judges. Realistically I see GA in the top 10 and nothing more. Even though she’s a good competitor I don’t get a lot of warmth or charisma from her other than she is a strong competitor. Plus, you are going to have some in the top 5 who are non-preliminary winners. It is just the way that pageants go. This year, I am not convinced that it is going to be a non-preliminary winner who wins MVA. The preliminary winners are all strong in their own ways and I do not think any of the non-winners are strong enough to pull off a win. Here are my picks on who it could be, and why.
MS-She is strong enough across the board. She has a lot of presence about her, you really notice her in each and every competition. She makes a case for herself in competition. I think she is the classic old school MAO contestant who did very well under the former system.
NH-She was my dark horse and still kind of is. What she would bring to the title is beauty, class, and she seems like a great young woman. I think she lives up to her name. She reminds me of a Laura Kaeppeler type winner-a bit more reserved but very regal, very poised. If the judges want that kind of winner, Grace would be a perfect choice.
OK-She is also the same. I could describe her as everything that I said about Grace. She has had a great week, always at the top of her categories, and she is also a beauty. She and NE have been some of my favorites this week.
TN-Right now as far as onstage competition, I don’t think anyone beats her. She is probably the strongest across the board. She is a double preliminary winner against some tough competition in each group. I really do think that she would be the obvious winner if there was not a real conflict of interest if she wins. And it would be well-deserved.
But, with all of this, there are variables. We do not know how any of these performed in interview, which is 40 percent of the score. And with not hearing any of the contestants speaking abilities, it is hard to say who has an edge there. And it is also important to note that I could be wrong, but I do not think the MVA system is going to demand an interview queen. I think they are looking for someone who communicates well but I really do not think they are looking for a MAO interview queen. I would hope not. Seeing the preliminary winners this week, they have been judging fairly and getting it right. I do think this panel will give us a great inaugural MVA. So, who do I really think it is going to be?
Based on onstage competition: hands down TN and she would deserve it. I am not going to be disappointed or jaded if she wins. It WILL be deserved. I saw all of the TN Volunteer pageant last June and she was the same way even before her win. She’s a very strong competitor.
Based on beauty and strong performances: NH or OK. They both have the total package as far as I am concerned. I would give a very slight edge to NH of the two, it’s hard to explain. I think NH has a tiny bit more of the it factor but I think OK could also win. They both have the beauty, talent, and everything else to back up the win. I think I fell in love with NH a little more over the week. She has something about her. I also think that she and HI are well-respected with their wins. From what I remember, they seemed to be the only two who hugged each other after winning, although my only slight complaint about the coverage was that once the winners were announced the livestream stalled a bit each night. So, the others might have, I could not tell. I don’t think they did.
Based on a safe, overall choice: MS. She has the classic look and feel of a national winner. She has certainly done enough to win this week. I think her academic credentials are good. She has the look, I think she has the age and maturity to be a good representative. If they are looking for a safe choice, and very credible, she is it.

So, who will it be? We will know in around 5 hours or so. All I know is that I have thoroughly enjoyed this week and believe me, I doubt few people are going to be grumbling about the winner. There were some fine representatives this week who would serve the MVA very well. You will get a combination of beauty and brains. There are no contestants this week who I felt put off by or disliked. It is a great group of young women and I wish them ALL the best tonight!

Look for a live post during the show!

Happy Saturday!

It is not even 8 hours from the exciting finish of the first of many Miss Volunteer America Pageant. I must say that I have THOROUGHLY enjoyed the competition this week. It is nice just to have a normal pageant back like we all used to know. The competition has been great, lots of great contestants, very well-prepared. I am going to post about this separately later, but the Miss Volunteer America system is only going to grow.

Last night's competition ended on a high note with a spectacular evening gown competition. But I will run down all three.

SS
I was definitely on board with HI's win. She had a special glow to her, she radiated happiness, confidence, and she had a great presentation. She really stood out to me. The other standout was GA-she had a strong presentation, very USA like. FL was in my top group as well, when she came out I had her as a guess for the preliminary win. IL was also strong. CA had a great body but an over the top presentation complete with her almost flinging her cape or whatever you want to call those things. Had she not been so over the top I would have considered her as a contender but it just was so bizarre. She had a great body, though.

Talent
The night started out slow, although not as weak as night 2. KY did a decent aerial performance, I have seen better, but I would think it had to have scored better because so many dancers after her. None of the dancers really stood out to me in any way until we got to NH. Her performance really was beautiful. Absolutely deserving of the preliminary win. She was graceful, a good dancer, emotional, just someone you would want to watch over and over again. I feel like she told a story with her music. I had NE a few before her as a possible winner, she did a very good job on a classical piece. With a few exceptions the pianists have been strong this week. NJ sang Somebody to Love and did very well with it. She has a Broadway type voice and I think she would have hit it out of the park with a Broadway song, but she definitely did well. She has pipes. I would have had her in the top 3 along with NH and NE. NY solidified her place for me in the top 15 with a good enough performance. She sang a John Legend song, it was also emotional, she created a full persona without just singing a song. She sang at a lower range, I don't think she has a great upper range but it definitely worked for her. Some of the rest were not remarkable, but I did want to give a shoutout to two talents I really enjoyed. I love when contestants do talents which are reflective of their culture and life. MT did a poetry recitation about life on a ranch. She dressed cute in a dress and cowboy boots and was very animated and enthusiastic. I thought it was very original and helped me to understand her more. I like the show Yellowstone, partially because we rarely hear stories about the West and ranch life. It was very unique and original and I loved it. Same for NM. She did a Mexican dance with a beautiful dress. It was reflective of her culture and she absolutely brought it to life. Very well done! The only exception was MA. I hate to say this, but it did not resonate with me. She gave a monologue about why she decided to go into law enforcement. Compare it with someone like Kelley Johnson a few years ago at Miss America and it basically came across like a 1 minute or so explanation in an interview question. While I appreciated her reasons, she had no emotion whatsoever and I felt like she was just giving an answer to a question.

Evening Gown
They ended up the preliminaries with a wonderful competition. To me, SC was the clear standout. She looked beautiful in red, elegant, very red carpet. It's funny because she reminds me in looks of the Tori on Cobra Kai and she is a very pretty young woman. Both of them have those big beautiful eyes with a round face. TN was her usual strong self as well, I would have her right behind SC. OK and UT, who had done well in SS, were right behind TN for me, those were my top four. Both very good presentations, OK also had a great walk. TX also had a nice presentation, as did PA and RI. I thought WA and WI were nice as well. But not a bad one in the whole group. The only one that had a bit of difficulty with her walk was WY, sort of like in SS she doesn't quite have good posture. But I really liked her gown. It was simple yet elegant.

Now I will post my full predictions!

Well that afternoon got away from me. But here's a recap of night two.

SS
Holy moly, this was a SMOKING HOT group of women! I could have seen SS go numerous different ways, and apparently the judges agreed. Both were very deserving winners. I had both of them as possibilities. I thought that the tie would have been TN and SC but I thought OK was absolutely a correct choice. I had her slightly behind SC, TN, and UT. OR was strong in SS as well, she wasn't in talent the night before but had to score well. I thought there was even an outside chance she might win. WA would have been next, and then PA, RI, and WI would be after them. The weakest I thought was WY and that was only because her walk was a little bit off, she was leaning front a bit. But she still was quite fit and in great shape. Really not a bad SS in this group. They were fantastic!

Talent
The talent was subpar. For all the good talents the night before, this was a huge letdown. I am hoping tonight redeems itself. To be fair, the talent hasn't been what we knew at the national level for a long time. Even at MAO where it is now 50 percent, some talent is not up to par. But anyway, it was really weak overall. AL was entertaining but it was really pageanty. It was very old school and did not really do justice to a young woman. So was CA. She did a speed paiting routine to Blue Suede Shoes and was dancing a bit in between. She painted an upside down Elvis and threw glitter on it at the end. It was great considering where they were but I think if a clip like that went viral she would be chided. That was followed by CO singing Elvis and she was way off key with no tone. CT played I Will Survive on the piano and it just was rudimentary. She has a great educational background, a Yale student, and I think she would have had some potential with the right choices. I just think she could have picked a better song if she was able to play piano, which she did. DC was decent but nowhere near the level of a Katie Harman. I want to see what FL does in SS tonight because she unfortunately does not have a good talent but was really strong in SS. GA-you can tell she has a good voice but the performance itself was decent. It wasn't outstanding, and she hit a really sour note at the end. She sang "Love Song" by the Cure. It was hardly recognizable. HI did a hula and hula is always nice. It was something you have seen many times over from a HI contestant. IL was actually a decent dancer and I thought she might have won until IN sang. She wasn't perfect but was certainly the best of the group, or so I thought.

EG
VERY strong group in EG. Lots of great gowns, lots of nice presentations. NY really stood out to me, her gown was great. I really think she has enough of what it takes to win NY USA, and that is a strong program. Depending on what she does for talent I could see her in the top 10. LA, MS and NH were all very high on my list as well. These would have been my top 4. KY looked nice, and I really liked MO's gown. It was an ombre green but also had some silver designs, it was very different from what we are used to seeing but very pretty. Same for NV-it was a teal dress with a cape but very pretty teal and nude bodice. NE also scored well for me, she was in a basic white but she has a nice presence about her. Natalie Ragazzo looked very nice in blue, she was one of my other high scorers in this group. And NC was last in this group but certainly not least. She had such a nice presence about her-she just had a glow about her face, a twinkle in her eye, and looked very elegant. Overall, a REALLY nice group. I loved it.

And the final prelims start in a little over an hour, so I will be back with a live post!

I will do what I did today and post the full rundown around midday. Since it looks as if a frontrunner has emerged, I just want to offer a quick comment. TN has been VERY good all week. SHE.CANNOT.WIN. That it unless you want to alienate any future competitors by the state running the national pageant winning the first year. I haven't seen her interview but honestly, she is deserving of the win IMO. More on what I think later, but I am sure a lot of people are talking after tonight.

Swimsuit-SMOKING HOT! This was an impressive group. Best in a strong, competitive group were SC, TN, and UT. I could see any of them winning. OK strong as well. Not a bad one in this group at all.

Good afternoon everyone!

I hope that at least some of you got to enjoy the Miss Volunteer America preliminaries last night. Last night I couldn't figure out which other state was missing, I figured out it was Maine. As of now, the states of DE, ME, ND, and WV are not represented at this year's pageant. However, there are plenty of other lovely contestants who are doing very well. It is just so nice to have a full pageant with talent, swimsuits, and evening gowns. No onstage question with this competition, at least this year. Perhaps they are looking for a well-rounded young woman like Miss America of old and are not so focused on a random onstage question. I suspect the final 5 will have a question on Saturday night. It has not been explained yet whether or not there will be a top 15, top 10, etc.

I am not sure of the scoring other than what they announced tonight, either. I am going to assume it is 1-10 like MAO but I am not sure. So, I will probably not do a rundown of every single contestant not knowing how they judged. I will just give who I thought was best, average, and likely towards the bottom of the group. The contestants are grouped alphabetically-A, B, and C. Maybe they could have been named after the members of the Rascal Flatts LOL. But I digress. Here's a general rundown of last night:

SS
These contestants are not playing-they are fit, I did not see one bad fitness body. It just came down to presentation. My top 3 were KY, MS, and NY. KY and MS had the bombshell TN/MAO bodies and presentations. NY had a USA presentation. I am very curious to see how this panel is judging and what they are going to score. I am suspecting you will see a similar type winner the next two nights. I had LA right behind those three, followed by NH and then NE. They were all confident and had rocking bodies. There were only one or two presentations I thought were lacking, MD being one of them. She had a very strange walk and didn't seem natural at all. There were some that just didn't have enough "pop" or stand out to me. Those were MA, MT, NV, and NM. The others I would say were average.

Talent
I think fans of the MAO would have really enjoyed the talent competition last night. There were a lot of good, enjoyable talents. Nobody could complain about subpar talents. I was totally on board with TN's talent win. She was energetic, seemed to be a very talented dancer, and very entertaining. It was a routine you would want to see again. Right behind her I would have put PA and RI, both on piano. I would have OK behind those two. After them, I would have put WI and then WY. WI did a very lovely dance and she just had a special quality about her dancing-her costume was very pretty, she smiled and she sparkled. WY did an inspirational monologue and she spoke with a lot of conviction. The only talent that really stood out to me which was poor was OR. She had a background track playing a classical piano piece. Either my screen had a lag or it almost seemed like her performance was pre-recorded. Then she kept flying her hands into the air after she played a few notes. Some were weaker like OH, she was off key. SC, who I know competed in MAO, sounded okay except when she was hitting high notes.

Evening Gown
GA was the clear standout to me here. Her dress was very pretty and she had a great presentation. I would have had HI next-she was everything you expect a Miss Hawaii to be. She had a beautiful glow about her and just conveyed a sense of personal warmth. After her I had FL-she looked very pretty in a red gown, very classy. Then I had AL-her gown was very pretty and elegant, and she had a nice presentation. I would have had CA and IL behind her, and then IN. They all had nice presentations and nice gowns. Nobody was bad at all, just some do not stand out as much as others.

Some comments about the contestants:

CA-she looks like Kira Kazantsev, who I was always a fan of. She does have a cuteness about her. I am looking forward to the rest of her week.
IA-There's something about her I like.
LA-I am a HUGE fan of hers, always have been.
MI-she is one cup short of a full pot of coffee. She has a very strange energy and presentation. A bit too much.
NH-I just love her. Did she compete in MAO?
NY-very USA, I am kind of surprised she has never done USA or won Miss NY USA (though it is an extremely competitive state)
TX-she is really cute to me. If this pageant is anything like any other American pageant we will see her in the finals, anyway, so I hope we get to see more of her.

With LA and SC I know they have MAO experience and were runners-up, but how did they never win their state pageants? I just don't get it, especially with LA. She is a National Sweetheart. This is the beauty of the Volunteer system, if one system does not pan out there is always another chance for you to excel and perhaps win a national pageant.

Does anyone know if Miss SD Peyton Wilson competed in TN? The name seems familiar and they mentioned her school. Iknow it was a TN school but I am not remembering which one.

The production reminded me a lot of a TN state pageant. Allison and Jay co-hosted along with Hailey Lewis. She's a lot of fun, I always liked her. There are also princesses during evening gowns. I am not a fan of them but guess what? It keeps the Miss programs going.

I am looking forward to night 2!
