Goodafternoon everyone!
We are almost a week past Miss America, and Madison is busy with appearances. Overall, her win and the pageant seemed to be very well received. Even if she was not first choice for some, I haven't heard many complaints. Many viewers seemed to be happy with the pageant itself, and I was generally satisfied. The only improvement I see for next year is new hosts (I think that is a general consensus) and if they continue the Q&A round all contestants should receive equally easy or hard questions.
Thinking about the winner and top 5, talent still really is not a priority. Realistically, I had CO as the best talent. I would have had IN behind her but there was better talent left in the top 10. Which is why sadly, talent is still going to continue to be a thing of the past. I know there are a lot of people who lament the good talent of years gone by, but they are hidden in the world of pageantry. Contestants who really want to be seen have avenues like American Idol, AGT and The Voice. Some of the best talent in the pageant, which were the pianists (with the exception of MA) didn't even make the top 10. I know some people hold onto the idea of having a talented Miss America, and some haven't been bad the past 10 years but it's never going to be the way it was.
Overall, Grace (under a different leader and scoring) and Madison were well-rounded. Both fit the mold that Miss America seems to like-achievers, academic. This year, Madison is getting a lot of press with being the first military member to hold the title. I have been saying we needed such a contestant for years. We had some contestants over the years like UT 2007 and KS 2013 who brought attention to their titles. Did the final night judges factor this into the equation? I am not sure. I mentioned this earlier in posts that Miss America definitely fits a mold and it is seeming like it is getting harder to break out of it. To the poster last week who I told that I had hopes for this year, I am sorry it didn't work out that way. I honestly thought that we had outstanding contestants who would have brought a fresh perspective to Miss America. I thought IN was absolutely delightful. I could have seen her speaking to high school students about her experience; or on the floor interacting with children. She had something special about her. I have loved Ellie ever since I saw her start competing. I remember in 2022 thinking maybe that she had what it took to be Miss TX in some very competition, and then she rose to the occasion in July. Then she rose to the occasion this past week. She couldn't have done anything more. I thought that she would have been a wonderful choice as she really could have had a unique platform which could have helped unite people, as she so eloquently stated. One thing that was apparent during the show is when NY said that we should welcome people into our country and the crowd fell silent. I still think this organization as a whole is stuck in a mindset of an ideal woman based on achievement. Believe me, there is nothing wrong with that. And this is not a criticism of Madison. I like her a lot, and I do think that she is going to bring good attention to a program which desperately needs it. I just have to wonder how this organization would fare if we started to value different things. This year, I think a case could have been made for each of the top 3. And I do believe that IN was certainly well-rounded enough, TX had a bit of a weaker talent and might not have given the best answer to terrorism (but who would?) and CO was consistent across the night. Given the state of the MAO as it is, I am a bit concerned about Madison not having a mother to support her. Would you really want this for your daughter? Yes, your dream comes true and you have a title of a lifetime, but there is so much wrong with the job of Miss America that I do not think it a bad thing if you get to go back to your state, have a nice time and move on with your life.
Changing of the guard-it was inconceivable even 5 years ago that Oklahoma would be on the outside looking in at Miss America, but that seems to have changed. This is three years in a row where they have been out of the top 10. Maybe last year I could have seen, but Ashleigh Robinson seemed like a very special young woman. When she gave up her title she was given flowers for around 15 minutes, they just kept coming and coming. I thought that Sunny radiated something (no pun intended) when she won and even at Miss America. It's like I said, with a limited judging panel maybe some good contestants were left standing. I do not think Oklahoma will ever be out of it totally, but they could be going into the wilderness. Has there been a change in leadership? CA is in the wilderness after a streak which seemed to begin with Tiffany Stoker in the mid-90s until Crystal Lee as first runner-up in 2013. They had a top 10 and top 15 since, and I am just keeping it real-some that I really questioned how they won in the first place. This is the second year that Miss AL did not place. They are doing just fine but I have to wonder, especially this year, what is going on. Like I said earlier, there were going to be good contestants who did not place. However, I thought AL was very consistent, and she won a preliminary, so she did excel in at least one area. AR had a bit of a dry spell going and they were back this year, as did KY. I just find it interesting that some of the powerhouses are showing signs of life. The only consistent powerhouse over the years is TX and FL. Even FL had their lean years. One of my big questions is whether TX will ever have a Miss America again. It's interesting to think about, because I didn't think they had anyone of that caliber until Averie. And then along came Ellie. So, I think they can. It's wild to me to think about their success yet they haven't had a Miss America in close to 50 years. Practically, I can tell you probably "why" Averie didn't win last year and I realize that maybe Ellie wasn't quite as strong in talent and maybe her answer on terrorism, but those are things that can be forgiven. I do not see anyone at Miss TX this year and in the up-and-coming who I think could win.
Preliminary judging-I actually like the idea of having qualified talent judges and two separate panels. Truthfully, I am not sure that it makes that much of a difference because we did not see spectacular talents in the top 10. I really do like the idea of having specialized judges, I just think we need more of them. The thing is, there isn't an endless supply of money for different judges. I think I would rather even 5 highly qualified judges for a whole week. I like the idea of cleaning the slate after competition and starting with final night judges. Overall, I think the judging was fair and with one or two exceptions that I would have left out and put someone else in, it was full of good contestants who performed well all week. With up to 9 awards and 8 given out, for 3 to only make it proved you needed to excel in all areas. I still would have had a strong case for TN and AL in the top 10. ME was a bit weaker in her first night presentations, and MI's talent just wasn't that strong. I thought MI would have been the wild card all week, she seemed like the type that if she meshed with the judges she would have gone a long way.
After all that, I think I've probably covered it all. Or at least that I can think of right now. What do you think in closing after having some time to reflect?
