I just want to comment on the pure chaos that has happened after the pageant. First of all, Katelynne Cox came out and said that she was silenced by NBC and the MAO. The pageant happened 24 hours after the third time in our nation's history where a president has been impeached. There was a primary debate happening at the same time. But what she said was quite newsworthy and had it not happened during that time, I think it would have been the story that hit the news. It still might. I read Marilyn VanDerbur's book, and she talked about how she was coming out as a childhood sexual abuse survivor around the time she was asked to judge. She told NBC that she would only judge if she was announced as a sexual abuse survivor. From what I remember, they didn't initially feel comfortable with it, but she was insistent. And she was able to judge and be announced as a sexual abuse survivor. That was either 1990 or 1991. How shameful that we went backwards 30 years later. And how shameful and hypocritical of the MAO for saying that this is supposed to be about social impacts and then saying it's too much. There are MANY brave contestants who shared their story about being sexually violated over the years and surviving it. Mallory's platform was regarding childhood sexual abuse. MAO, YOU created these rules that a contestant needed to show a commitment to a specific platform. And then when someone wants to take on something uncomfortable, you want them to shut up? I do hope that Katelynne has a chance to speak out in the media and confront this. And I hope this story does not disappear. As far as NBC, they kept their own predator on the air for several years until finally women came forward and forced them to do something about it. They have no moral high ground here, but I'm not surprised. I know there is a camp out there who thinks Sam Haskell would have been better right now. I say no, because when you demean women, it's the same thing as NBC and the current MAO did to Katelynne. Same thing, there's no difference.

And there is the other problem. Supposedly, Texas wanted to leave this week. Oregon, the preliminary interview winner, called for transparency. I think that something went seriously wrong during pageant week. Last year, titleholders like Christine Williamson and Annie Jorgensen came forward and talked about their experiences. I highly doubt it has been easier on this year's contestants. During the "orientation", it was reported that the contestants were told they had to tow the line or else. I think they were intimidated into what we saw this week. There seems to be at least some thought that this was pre-determined for Camille to win. I think there might have been a push to pick a certain "type" of winner. I am listening to Betty and Savvy as they are talking, and they are concerned that this has become an academic competition. It's always been that you attract academic types and had someone like Erika Harold win. But I also strongly agree that it seems like with these changes that you have to be a certain kind of woman. Now, I do think that Camille is very pretty and she looks like what you think a Miss America should look like. Some people felt that she pandered to win. I don't know what to think. I do have a different theory. Last year during Nia's interview, she said that she brought in sponsors. During the post crowning conference, Camille said that she was approached by corporate sponsors. Is this part of the "judging" factor now-how much the contestant can bring in? But then again, how the hell can they keep sponsors right now and keep them happy? They all jumped ship with the Haskell scandal and NOBODY came on with these so-called changes. There is no proper management. Camille can probably align with large multi-million dollar pharmaceutical companies whereas Georgia would have aligned with children who are so poor their foster families can get public assistance for them. There was no money in her platform. I HOPE I am wrong.

And then there was the issue of asking about children and being married. I think it is completely acceptable to be in a relationship and be Miss America. Now as far as being married or divorced and being Miss America. The reality is that most young people are delaying marriage to their late 20s and early 30s at least as well as child-rearing. That is our society. If you happen to get married young under the age of 25 (the current MAO limit) or before, it's not the norm. If you are on the road for 300 days a year, how can you grow your young marriage? And how could you justify leaving a small child alone for a year and more? If you are competing for a state pageant, you are still very busy. This isn't the job for a parent or young wife. And if you happen to be under 25 and divorced, that's a rough ride of it. I had a few friends who married that young, it was a mistake for them, and they were devastated that their lives were affected by divorce at such a young age. You think they want to turn around and do a pageant to get over the devastation of the death of a marriage? Some of these things just do not make sense. I know both GA and VA took some slack for their answers, but I don't think it's realistic to be Miss America and be a mother to a small child. And I don't think it's healthy to have a young marriage and expect to grow it properly. Ask anyone and they will tell you the first few years of marriage are the hardest. It's not about whether you support women or not, it's more about growing a healthy marriage. You can do both. I don't think it is wrong to consider the emotional effects of having an absentee mother, which is what you would be if you were off traveling the country when your child is very young.

It looks like we are right back where we started from before this nonsense, and now it did have a national stage for a night. NOBODY likes these changes, and that has to be addressed. My wild and crazy traveling companion said this-we would possibly go to a 100th anniversary Miss America pageant or whatever. But after that, we will not be going if it is like this. They touted that they were online now during the preliminary nights. I saw my first online pageant in 2002, Miss Ohio. And I had dialup still. This is not groundbreaking. But it's not worth it to have the non-contestants there for two days in the winter with bad travel and nothing to do otherwise. And two nights of essentially speaking with a little bit of talent thrown in is not worth it.

Good evening everyone!

What an evening. I would say that all's well that ends well. Congratulations to our new Miss America, Camille Schreier! I do think that she will be a good Miss America. I know there will be some debate about her talent. But, I suspect there is going to be more of a debate about the format itself tonight.

There's a lot I have to say about the competition tonight. I'm sure it reflects the general mood of the viewing public. I did like the judges and I think they were very engaged and seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Other than that, the format needs to go. I don't know if it was obvious to the TV audience, but it was VERY quiet and subdued tonight. That was the least energetic pageant there ever was. There was no energy, everyone seemed so down, sans the Connecticut crowd. Congratulations, by the way, another top 5! You're getting to be a powerhouse state. It is nice to see some of the newer states starting to rise. Also, congratulations to Missouri. A first runner up and a second runner up in three years is quite an accomplishment. I was very proud of Victoria Hill, too. I am quite happy with Camille, too. I hated that we didn't get to see Brianna Mason or some of the others like Darynne Dahlem, but I wasn't surprised at any of the top 15.

Much more tomorrow! I am looking forward to getting to know Camille as much as we can. Please share your thoughts about this craziness otherwise known as a competition. Also, I will respond to everyone's comments tomorrow as well.

Subject: Honestly, this was the worst excuse for a Miss America “pageant” ever. Go back to what worked for years.......10 girls, 10 swimsuits, 10 talents, 10 evening gowns, and call the winners from the entire group of 10. Not this hot mess I saw last night.

Happy holidays everyone!

I had to get back to work-no rest for the weary-when I got back. So I've been missing the past few days. But, I do have the day off tomorrow and will have my full review of the competition or whatever it was. In the meantime, I want to wish each and every one of you a happy holiday! Whether it be Hannukah, Christmas, or Kwanzaa that you are celebrating, or recently the Solstice, I wish you and your family and friends a blessed day and season. I really appreciate all of you who have posted here, and the pageant community is a great one :)

And here's to an awesome 2020!

With many blessings,

Subject: MU TALENT

Top of the evening everyone!

I think that Mu talent was a big drop-off from the first night. It's not that there weren't average or subpar talents on night 1, but it kind of seemed like in Mu, nobody really had any standout performances. Alpha had some really enjoyable performances. There was a lot of debate in the threads beneath about what constitutes talent and entertainment. I think a lot of the talents did not engage the audience as did in Alpha. I do think based on some of the people in the audience that Indiana resonated as she did with me. And apparently did Virginia. But there were not any real "wow" moments. Just a lot more average performances. Here is my rundown of talent:

AK-danced to It’s All Coming Back to Me Now by Celine Dion. (I wanted to dance to this song, actually.) Unfortunately, I think Maile had some trouble with it. I don’t know if it was slippery for her, it kind of looked like she might have slipped. 4-5
RI-did an Irish Step Dance. Bridget set the bar SO HIGH last year it’s hard to ever look at Irish Step Dance again without thinking of that standard. Molly didn’t do bad with it at all, however. I would call it average good, maybe 6.5
MS-I think it was the Midnight Aria. I recognized it, I’ve heard it many times before. She did well with it, one of the better in this group. I would give it a solid 7.
MT-Sang the Smash song. It was a big song, I don’t think she hit some of the notes she needed too well, but it was a nice attempt. 5.5
DE-She sang the Amy Winehouse song Valerie. It was kind of interesting-unique, something you don’t hear a lot. It sounded more modern, I give her props for taking on something original. I would say it was energetic, her voice kind of had a modern edge to it. 6
TX-She played “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” on the flute. It was more entertaining, but straight out of the 70s. The accompany music was very 70s, it almost reminded me of what you would see in a pageant circa 1971. It was definitely more entertaining than technical. I would give it a 5 as far as performance, 6 on the cheese factor.
IL-Sang Son of a Preacher Man. I don’t know, I am not a big fan of this song in competition. It just never goes well. It’s like Proud Mary-you don’t want to try and imitate the original. Ariel has a nice voice, I just don’t think she got a chance to showcase it very well. 5.5
FL-Didn’t recognize the music, but she did a lyrical dance. I thought it was pretty, actually, and she had a nice costume. One of the better talents of last night. 6.5 to 7
VA-Of course, the science demonstration/experiment. I am looking at how she presented herself-she was energetic and engaged the crowd. I would say that her presentation probably won her the win. She had enthusiasm, and there wasn’t a lot of other enthusiasm last night. I think just the energy of it was what drew the judges in. 8
KY-Sang Maybe This Time. Also a song we’ve seen many times over, but a decent performance. I would put it in the average category.6
IN-Sang You Will Be Found. It was a lovely, lovely performance. Tiara has a huge voice and she really connected with the emotions of the song. I *hope* we get to see it.
WV-did a baton twirling routine. Unfortunately, she did drop her baton once. It wasn’t too bad, but it was noticeable. It was probably hard because MO had such a good presentation the night before. It did have some good energy though. 6
WY-Tap dance to 9 to 5. Again like with TX, a little old fashioned, but it was cute nonetheless.
NV-Did a comedic monologue. She did impressions of other people and had some funny moments. It wasn’t outstanding, but it was a nice change of pace. 6.5
NE-Sang Vanessa Williams 😊 It was a good choice for her. I think this is actually a good song for someone who isn’t a soprano. It has a nice melody. I have a good memory-Shawntel Smith sang this in the Macy’s Parade in 1995. I would say Allie’s performance was maybe a 5.5 to 6. It wasn’t bad in any way, just a little laid back.
MD-Played The Swan on the cello. She had a nice performance, wasn’t anything outstanding, but pleasant to hear. 6
ME-I want to say this was a Lindsay Sterling song, she played violin. It had some energy, I put it in the good average range. 6 to 6.5
MI-Sang Feeling Good. If I never, ever, ever, never, ever never ever ever hear this song again at a pageant I will be none the happier. But I doubt I will get my wish. That being said, it’s usually a song for someone with a limited vocal ability. When Mallory started to get into some of the higher notes and more dynamics of the performance, she went off key. I really think it was only a 4.
WA-did a tap dance. It was an energetic dance, I enjoyed the energy of it. I would say that it was probably the best dancer of the evening. 7
LA-sang I Will Always Love You. Again like some of the talents, it’s a huge song to take on. She has a decent voice, but it was just too big to take on for the high notes, I thought. I would give it a 6.
WI-Did a tap dance. It was a little less energetic than WA, it was an average performance. 5.5
NM-Did a hip hop dance. I thought it was good to try something different, and I give her props for it. The only thing is, I am far from an expert on all things hip hop, but it didn’t seem that remarkable. I would say 6 for the overall attempt, but a 5 for the dancing.
MN-Sang Nature Boy. It was kind of a musical theater presentation. I thought she did well with it. She kind of looked like Mrs. Maisel. 6.5 to 7
AZ-played the pageant standard Habanera. It was an average kind of good performance 6.
ID-I am someone who really wish that we would see actual talents instead of contestants just taking on something pageant acceptable. Grace chose to demonstrate her ceramics talent, but the problem was is that you had a short time to get in what you needed to do. Years ago, we saw sewing demonstrations, some contestants would come out with something they had already drawn, etc. I am not sure how you would have scored this, but I do give her a lot of credit for actually demonstrating something she was good and talented at. I am not talented in any way with ceramics, and I enjoyed it. I couldn’t have given it anything more than an average score, but I thought with maybe some more time it would have been more effective. It was in no way weak, just different.
NJ-operatic vocal. She had a solid performance, maybe not as strong as some of the Alpha group, but she was good. I would say 7 to 7.5.

My next post will be the big post about each contestant. Just because the weather sucks pretty badly, we may wait until later to travel or change plans. Everyone's concerns about the weather in New England in December were quite valid. The only good thing is that they are used to this and much more prepared. Today SUCKED.

Hooray! The big day is here! I am excited about tonight. It was a different week, believe me, but despite how this is going to go down, we will at least get to meet some great young women tonight, even if for a little bit. Congratulations to all of the great contestants, the class of 2019. They put up with a lot of uncertainty, adjusted to the changes, and did their best.

As for tonight's competition, I think uncertainty IS the certainty of the night. I said this last year, and I mean it even more this year. If your favorite does not end up in the top 15/7/whatever, don't be disappointed. No one was judged fairly or competently this year. You can't have two panels of judges with a total of 6 judges to be coherent. I do think the cream always rises to the top, and there are always likely on a few true competitors. My big question this year is: what kind of factor will talent be? There was some good talent this year, but there are contestants like SC with good everything else but are weak at talent. The same as the two preliminary winner interviews, MI and OR. How will interview factor?

Unfortunately, we can't speculate too much because it's near impossible to guess what will happen because the judging so convoluted. I suspect that there will at least be some contestants with weaker talents in the top 15, although how it gets whittled down to the top 7, I don't know. But, here is my stab at what is going to happen:

Of the preliminary winners, with their strengths and drawbacks:

GA-Strong talent and very outgoing personality. She has the classic Miss America personality. She’s the kind of person you think of on a talk show meeting hosts like Kelly Ripa and immediately hitting it off. Victoria is also compassionate and is passionate about her platform. I think she checks all of the boxes. The only drawback I see with her is that she may come across as a little more “mature”, and even though she’s obviously a young woman, it may hurt her with younger judges. Her platform might not bring in a lot of money or appearances. I hate to say that, but let’s face it-they’re looking to get any money they can right now.

VA-Camille is also very personable and extremely well-spoken. She has a contagious energy about her, and even though her talent is controversial, she sells it. Like with Kira’s talent, I could see judges saying that kids would really like it. I could see Camille with corporate sponsors (if there are some) and being able to converse and relate to those in the business world as well. My drawback is that like GA, she might seem a little more mature. She doesn’t quite have the it factor of GA, either. With her opiod platform and a national crisis, I think she could get some good press and appearances.

NJ-Jade is cute as a doll. She is young and I think of all of the preliminary winners, the most possibly relatable. I think she would relate very well to the young women in the program, would be good to speak to college aged women and her peers as well as children. She really believes in her latform and finds a way to make it relevant. I believe she could also align with some great health organizations, and she might get a lot of appearances. The drawback is that she likely does not have the higher composite scores that maybe GA or VA have, and we don’t know how she did in other categories.

MI and OR-The two preliminary interview winners. Let’s face it, interview does go a long way in this organization. Both of these young ladies bested 25 other well-spoken women in their individual groups and won big. I would say that of the two, MI has the more outgoing personality. Neither have good talent, and that’s where I wonder how they fall. I would say possibly one gets into the top 7. I like them both, and I could make a strong case for OR as a Miss America, minus the talent. (more on that later) But I just don’t know with either of these. It’s hard to say how influential interview will be this year.

Now, out of the non-winners (at least onstage)

SC-If this were 1.0, I would say that there is a very strong possibility that SC is our next Miss America. She has a great presence, she looks good, and she speaks very well. Also, she cleaned up in the competitions this week. That to me signifies that she is doing well in this system and can do well. I am not writing her off for Miss America at this point despite her talent. It’s not Kristi Glakas bad, but it’s not good. I think if the judges liked her enough, they would forgive her talent. And she would still likely get called for Star Spangled Banners in baseball season. She does have an it factor about her, and at very least, I could see her as the Gabby T of this year’s pageant. And I do think there is an outside chance that she wins. I just think they could forgive her talent if everything else was there.
TX-Better talent than SC, and I just think her story is going to resonate. Her talent was entertaining and far worse has won. She speaks confidently and with conviction, and I do think her message gets across to people. I know she seems to rub people the wrong way, but I didn’t get a lot of that this week. I didn’t think she was over the top or obnoxious. There have been some obnoxious contestants over the years like Kristi Glakas, and the one who really rubbed me the wrong way-Lisette Gonzalez, Miss FL 98. She was so over the top, overdramatic, overconfident. I was afraid she was going to win, and the other contestants looked relieved when she didn't win. I don't see TX as like that. Truthfully, she didn’t come across as outstanding to me in any category, but good in speaking. And I do think she may be a factor, although I’m not sure.

AL-has been very consistent all week with very good talent, especially for Miss America standards of late. She is polished, well-spoken, and I do remember her all week. She looks good, she comes from a state with a great track record.

CA-Phenomenal talent, and she has a lot going for her. I would say one of her strengths is that she really does present herself as a young woman of today, not afraid to speak about her own difficult and challenging journey. Being from a large state, she is already used to all different kinds of people from different cultures, religions, political beliefs, ages. She does really strike me like an accepting and relatable person.

The most consistent other contestants would be for me Hawaii, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Minnesota. I also think Iowa and Rhode Island have been consistent. Then I do think there are ones like Arkansas who might not have the best talent ever, but they do come across well, polished, and could likely make the top 15.

I am going to take a stab at the top 15: AL, AR, CA, GA, HI, MI, MN, NJ, OK, OR, SC, TX, VA, and two others from anyone I said is a possibility. It’s hard to say who, and I could see some of the ones I noted, mainly like AR (hate to say) or maybe MN not in the top 15 for some who have done well. There are so many factors this year. And there is always the one that comes in and surprises everyone out of nowhere.

Who is my Miss America?
I still think that the woman I am choosing has the it factor, the talent, and the personality to back it up. She is compassionate, would do well with people and be the ambassador that the MAO needs right now. I think Victoria Hill will become our new Miss America.

If not her, then I would possibly say NJ or even SC. I don’t think VA has enough of the it factor, but I could see it coming down to her and GA as 1 and 2. I do think she is an outstanding contestant and will be very strong all night. Or, it could be someone flying below the radar right now. We will find out soon enough!

I never heard of Lauren Ash and I really don't know anything about her, but I loved Karamo on DWTS. I voted for him as long as he was in. I thought he actually was a better dancer than he was given credit for. I think he and Kelly Rowland will add a youth factor to the panel, and that's why I think someone like NJ could sneak in and win. If there is any bright spot in all of this, we desperately needed a young panel. We needed more judges, but I do think we have to have younger judges overall.

I usually wish everyone a happy Miss America day, but since it's less than a week from Christmas, Merry Miss America Day to one and all! Do your best to enjoy yourself among all of this chaos and nonsense. I wish your favorites all the best and less than 6 hours from now, there will be a new Miss America! I wish her the best, because it's going to be a challenging year. Also, all the best to Nia Franklin as she pursues a life after Miss America.

We will all "talk" after the pageant. Have a great time, and thanks all for your great conversations the last few days!
