Here is the first half of talent. I am going by the scoring system that has been in place for the past 10 years or so.
1-3 below average
4-6 average
7-9 above average
10 perfection
We don't really see a whole lot of 10s onstage anymore. I don't know if we ever really have. Especially now. Years ago, you did. For those of you who are newer, the contestants these days do not have the talent of years past. I think that partially has to do with the fact that the Miss America system used to be a gateway to possible exposure if you wanted to break into the entertainment industry. Now, not so much, and you have USA/Universe if you want to get into the entertainment industry, especially modeling or fashion. I am giving these scores based on what the average contestant is like now. So here goes:
OR-Sang reflection. She didn’t start the night off strongly. She is very average, not the best vocalist. Not terrible, but not very strong. I would give it a 5 overall
NY-did a patriotic ballet dance. It was kind of reminiscent of Keri Schrader, Miss MD 99 and 3rd runner-up to Heather French. However, this was I don’t know, it was a bit on the side where it just didn’t work. Keri’s wasn’t that great, either, but it was more serious. I love Stars and Stripes, it’s probably my favorite patriotic song, especially on the 4th of July, but the overall concept didn’t come off well.
AL-Sang Nessum Dorma. Very solid performance. I’ve heard this done many times over the years, and it takes someone to do it well. She really did. It was the first strong talent of the night, and I could have seen it taking preliminary talent. 9
SD-I am not sure what song she played, she played the piano. It sounded like a modern piece. It wasn’t bad, I would call it a good average 6
KS-did speed painting. I always love this talent. I thought it worked well for her. This was a good example of doing the talent that you have perfected. To me, the standard in this genre was the Haas girl from TN that did this for several years, and this was not quite that, but it was good. I would have given in a 7.
IA-a classical opera piece. She wasn’t quite as strong as AL, she set the bar high, but she did a good job. I would have given in in the 7.5-8 range.
TN-I think she did the same song as she did at Miss TN for the years she competed. She played Piano Fantasy, and it was pretty good. I would give it a 7.5.
DC-Sang You Don’t Own Me. It was an okay performance. She sang with passion, but I’m not sure that she had a big enough voice to take on this. I would give it a 6 overall.
MO-Very entertaining and fast paced baton routine to Last Dance. It had a lot of energy, and so did she. It was a real crowd pleaser and since another entertaining routine won, I’m sure this had to have scored well. I would give it a solid 8.5.
SC-Sang Stand By Me. It was pretty weak; I hate to say. She looked good, but she doesn’t have that good of vocal ability. It wasn’t Kristi Glakas bad, but it wasn’t good, either. I would give it a 4, but I could see where it could be realistically scored a 3. I also think she tried to overperform with the theatrics of the song, and it didn’t really help.
MA-I must apologize, I know she danced but I for the life of me can't remember what the song or style was.
ND-I also did not recognize the song, but it was more of a jazz dance. It was energetic, just not anything remarkable compared to the other contestants. I would give it a 6 on entertainment factor.
CT-Sang Once Upon A Time, the newer version. It was pleasant, she has a Broadway musical kind of voice. It was just a nice song, She had some trouble with the higher notes. 6
AR-Sang Somewhere. She’s not the strongest vocalist ever, and she did have some trouble with the higher notes. I wouldn’t have picked this piece for her. She had a nice performance, and I would give it a 6 for the theatrical side of it, but I might realistically give it a 5.
OK-Did a tap dance to Diamonds Are A Girl’s BF. I thought it was cute, it played to her personality. I heard her talent was very strong and this was a good performance, but it wasn’t outstanding either. I would give it a solid 7 based on the overall appeal of her and her personality.
VT-Sorry, I screwed this up. I said she was among the better of the night, but I was mistaken. She sang Benny and The Jets. It didn’t work, I hate to say. She’s a great gal, but this was not a good idea. Would have to put this down as one of the weakest of the night.
NH-danced to Do You Believe In Love. It wasn’t bad, but it kind of seemed like the pageanty kind of dance that could have been much better. 5
CA-played a very challenging classical piece on the violin. I think it was the same as she played at Miss CA. It was great, very detailed, you can tell her skills. It was either her or GA for me. Solid 9.
GA-I don’t know how to spell it, it is the song Patricia Leines sang in 1996. I think it was the same costume as Miss GA where she kind of looks like a pirate. Very well done, very natural, made it seem effortless. Strong 9.
HI-a classical piece, I think it was Grieg’s Concerto. I think this is what she played at Miss CA last year. Very solid performance. Not quite as dynamic as the 2 before her, but very solid. I hated she had to follow them, because she’s very good. 8 or above
NC-tap dance, I forget the name. From what I heard, she had a very strong talent. She was entertaining, I would say she was better than OK. I didn’t think it was as strong as I heard she was, but it was a solid, fun performance. Solid 7.
OH-sang O Mio Babbino Caro. Katie Harman set the standard SO HIGH with this song. Pardon me if I mention this, but her beautiful voice just rang out in Convention Hall and filled it up and not in a screaming way. It was just pure perfection. So, it’s hard for me to get that out of my mind. That being said, Caroline did a good job with it. Maybe not as strong as some of the others, but good enough 7.5
CO-Also another classical vocal. She also has some decent pipes, and it was a good performance another 7.5. I would say she was about on par with OH.
UT-ballet dance to I Don Quixote. As you have come to expect with UT, very well done. The only thing I would say is that she kind of lacks a strong stage presence or confidence, or something, and she didn’t quite pop like I wanted. I would still give it a strong 7.75 to 8.
PA-Danced to Such A Time As This. It was kind of average-nice but nothing outstanding or memorable. I would give it a 5.
Mu talent to follow soon!

- I thought Connecticut was Judy Garland compared to DC ,Oregon , Arkansas, and South Carolina. I don't think she had problems with the high notes at all. I also think you're being very generous Iowa's score. To me her voice was extremely annoying and grating. I agree about New York--very disappointing performance. I can't remember what Massachusetts did either it was something like "The end of the dream" or something like that --she was maybe a 3 and that's being generous. And I guess apples and oranges but I thought that Colorado and Alabama we're better than Georgia just my opinion I guess , although I can see how people would disagree with that. -- No name, 16:06:09 12/17/19 Tue
- 1-3: OR, NY, KS, DC, SC, MA, ND, OK, & NH bc they were local level talents. 4-6: SD, TN, CT, AR, & PA. These talents don't strike me as state winners if talent is 50%. 7s to opera singers IO & OH. I didn't care for IO's voice either. I didn't want it on TV & should have lowered it a point for that. OH is a screamer at times & I didn't care for the over the top presentation of a song most know as a tender plea, rather than a temper tantrum. I think UT is talented but not a ballerina, which makes it hard to score her with the 8s of AL, MO, HA, CO. All very talented & well presented but a 10 is rare, 9 fantastic, & 8 exceptional. I gave 2 9s. I LOVED VT. I loved that this could be on a reality show (& the hiphop dancer. The end got a little weird but I just didn't care bc Modern! Adds 3 pts, lol. CA was the other 9. Her music was perfection but she could have done more in the presentation/ costume selection. GA was my 10. She looked fierce, modern, exuded confidence & had the chops. -- No name, 18:43:29 12/17/19 Tue
- Thank you for your honesty! Our state protested and filed complaints against our state winner's results, which is one of your 1-3 range. I will not say state nor name to not embarrass our candidate. Hopefully, we will can get new leadership changes so that our state and locals would become fair to young women. So your board is refreshing for those that believe our representative is smart and beautiful, but couldn't believe she got pass prelims with her talent and won at state. -- No name, 19:33:18 12/17/19 Tue

- Wow, some great input from everyone on this thread! I always love hearing the opinions of others to see where we agree and differ. LOL this ought to be fun with three judges all week. At least the final night judges have to possibly pick through 10 or whatever they decide. Mu talent to come right now! -- Owner/Moderator, 01:21:19 12/18/19 Wed
- I like New Hampshire state talent better, why do they change from lyrical to jazz. Also probably the same for NY I read he state talent was better -- No name, 06:05:03 12/18/19 Wed
- Feel the need to chime in as well about Miss CT!! You’re all correct, not technically perfect, but man I’m telling you, between her story and that gorgeous red gown, you could feel the emotion and she SOLD it, and the crowd roared more than ANY other talent in 2 nights (obv because were in CT but still it holds weight). I’d give it a solid 7, above average, right behind the opera singers who were all truly fantastic! -- No name, 11:05:56 12/18/19 Wed

- Yes, isn't it fun to be the home state? ;) She did get a lot of support this week. I am working on my big post right now about all the contestants, but I do think she has done well and I had her as one of my better speakers. She very well may get into the top 15. That's a whole other topic in itself right now, though. -- Owner/Moderator, 17:24:07 12/18/19 Wed
