Here is the first half of talent. I am going by the scoring system that has been in place for the past 10 years or so.

1-3 below average
4-6 average
7-9 above average
10 perfection

We don't really see a whole lot of 10s onstage anymore. I don't know if we ever really have. Especially now. Years ago, you did. For those of you who are newer, the contestants these days do not have the talent of years past. I think that partially has to do with the fact that the Miss America system used to be a gateway to possible exposure if you wanted to break into the entertainment industry. Now, not so much, and you have USA/Universe if you want to get into the entertainment industry, especially modeling or fashion. I am giving these scores based on what the average contestant is like now. So here goes:

OR-Sang reflection. She didn’t start the night off strongly. She is very average, not the best vocalist. Not terrible, but not very strong. I would give it a 5 overall
NY-did a patriotic ballet dance. It was kind of reminiscent of Keri Schrader, Miss MD 99 and 3rd runner-up to Heather French. However, this was I don’t know, it was a bit on the side where it just didn’t work. Keri’s wasn’t that great, either, but it was more serious. I love Stars and Stripes, it’s probably my favorite patriotic song, especially on the 4th of July, but the overall concept didn’t come off well.
AL-Sang Nessum Dorma. Very solid performance. I’ve heard this done many times over the years, and it takes someone to do it well. She really did. It was the first strong talent of the night, and I could have seen it taking preliminary talent. 9
SD-I am not sure what song she played, she played the piano. It sounded like a modern piece. It wasn’t bad, I would call it a good average 6
KS-did speed painting. I always love this talent. I thought it worked well for her. This was a good example of doing the talent that you have perfected. To me, the standard in this genre was the Haas girl from TN that did this for several years, and this was not quite that, but it was good. I would have given in a 7.
IA-a classical opera piece. She wasn’t quite as strong as AL, she set the bar high, but she did a good job. I would have given in in the 7.5-8 range.
TN-I think she did the same song as she did at Miss TN for the years she competed. She played Piano Fantasy, and it was pretty good. I would give it a 7.5.
DC-Sang You Don’t Own Me. It was an okay performance. She sang with passion, but I’m not sure that she had a big enough voice to take on this. I would give it a 6 overall.
MO-Very entertaining and fast paced baton routine to Last Dance. It had a lot of energy, and so did she. It was a real crowd pleaser and since another entertaining routine won, I’m sure this had to have scored well. I would give it a solid 8.5.
SC-Sang Stand By Me. It was pretty weak; I hate to say. She looked good, but she doesn’t have that good of vocal ability. It wasn’t Kristi Glakas bad, but it wasn’t good, either. I would give it a 4, but I could see where it could be realistically scored a 3. I also think she tried to overperform with the theatrics of the song, and it didn’t really help.
MA-I must apologize, I know she danced but I for the life of me can't remember what the song or style was.
ND-I also did not recognize the song, but it was more of a jazz dance. It was energetic, just not anything remarkable compared to the other contestants. I would give it a 6 on entertainment factor.
CT-Sang Once Upon A Time, the newer version. It was pleasant, she has a Broadway musical kind of voice. It was just a nice song, She had some trouble with the higher notes. 6
AR-Sang Somewhere. She’s not the strongest vocalist ever, and she did have some trouble with the higher notes. I wouldn’t have picked this piece for her. She had a nice performance, and I would give it a 6 for the theatrical side of it, but I might realistically give it a 5.
OK-Did a tap dance to Diamonds Are A Girl’s BF. I thought it was cute, it played to her personality. I heard her talent was very strong and this was a good performance, but it wasn’t outstanding either. I would give it a solid 7 based on the overall appeal of her and her personality.
VT-Sorry, I screwed this up. I said she was among the better of the night, but I was mistaken. She sang Benny and The Jets. It didn’t work, I hate to say. She’s a great gal, but this was not a good idea. Would have to put this down as one of the weakest of the night.
NH-danced to Do You Believe In Love. It wasn’t bad, but it kind of seemed like the pageanty kind of dance that could have been much better. 5
CA-played a very challenging classical piece on the violin. I think it was the same as she played at Miss CA. It was great, very detailed, you can tell her skills. It was either her or GA for me. Solid 9.
GA-I don’t know how to spell it, it is the song Patricia Leines sang in 1996. I think it was the same costume as Miss GA where she kind of looks like a pirate. Very well done, very natural, made it seem effortless. Strong 9.
HI-a classical piece, I think it was Grieg’s Concerto. I think this is what she played at Miss CA last year. Very solid performance. Not quite as dynamic as the 2 before her, but very solid. I hated she had to follow them, because she’s very good. 8 or above
NC-tap dance, I forget the name. From what I heard, she had a very strong talent. She was entertaining, I would say she was better than OK. I didn’t think it was as strong as I heard she was, but it was a solid, fun performance. Solid 7.
OH-sang O Mio Babbino Caro. Katie Harman set the standard SO HIGH with this song. Pardon me if I mention this, but her beautiful voice just rang out in Convention Hall and filled it up and not in a screaming way. It was just pure perfection. So, it’s hard for me to get that out of my mind. That being said, Caroline did a good job with it. Maybe not as strong as some of the others, but good enough 7.5
CO-Also another classical vocal. She also has some decent pipes, and it was a good performance another 7.5. I would say she was about on par with OH.
UT-ballet dance to I Don Quixote. As you have come to expect with UT, very well done. The only thing I would say is that she kind of lacks a strong stage presence or confidence, or something, and she didn’t quite pop like I wanted. I would still give it a strong 7.75 to 8.
PA-Danced to Such A Time As This. It was kind of average-nice but nothing outstanding or memorable. I would give it a 5.

Mu talent to follow soon!

Good evening everyone!

Well, I’ve settled into this “competition”, and it’s over. Sadly, the whole competition was less than 6 hours. And so it was in Atlantic City if you took out all of the Haskell self-aggrandizing, but I digress lol. Congratulations to talent winner Miss Virginia Camille Schreiber, private interview winner Miss Oregon Shivali Kadame and onstage question winner and now double preliminary winner Miss Georgia Victoria Hill! I was half right about tonight 😊 I would say now she’s emerged as a front-runner, but it’s still rather unknown what is going to happen. It’s getting interesting. Both preliminary private interview winners both have weak talents. Both talent winners are also strong speakers as evidenced tonight. I thought VA had one of the better answers last night. And then there’s cute as a button NJ who had a good talent night tonight. Overall, tonight’s talent was much weaker than last night. And as a bonus, I am going to start writing up the talent synopsis when I am done here, though it probably won’t be up until sometime tomorrow early afternoon. It is starting to precipitate here, and it’s supposed to be some kind of frozen precipitation. The free “scholarship competition” is tomorrow at 10 a.m. My wild and crazy traveling companion said that she would not “sit through 2 hours of junior miss interviews without alcohol”. So, we will not be going LOL. If it was just me, I might, but I can see her point. Maybe they will put it online. But there will be a lot of down time tomorrow. We are planning to go to the meet and greet in the evening, however.

Back to tonight’s competition. Talent was much weaker overall. There weren’t a whole lot of winners to pick from. What I said earlier stands-I do believe an Alabama or California should have put themselves in this group because they likely would have cleaned up. My own personal favorite was Miss Indiana. She sang a very heartfelt and moving rendition of You Will Be Found. It was one of those performances that you really felt. Had I been a judge, she would have been my winner. But I fully suspected that and have no problems with Virginia winning. Remember, this is a talent that won NFT a few years ago from Miss VT 2015. She was one that I was just hoping would come through and never did, so she didn’t make the top 15. But it was a lot of fun. Truthfully, I have no idea what kind of judging standards are in place anymore. But the talent judging was for years up until recently, “Do you want to see it again?” Camille made it entertaining and engaging. The only real true top tier talent like some of the ones we saw last night was Indiana. She may have sang herself into the top 15 after that performance. There were some good ones like New Jersey who sang opera, for instance, who have been very consistent. Mississippi was good as well, she also sang opera. I also think Minnesota was one of the better of the night, and Washington had a fast paced and entertaining tap dance. Some decent performances like Maine and I enjoyed Nevada’s monologue more than I initially I thought I would. Other than that, some were decent and others were just forgettable.

Now, the speaking part of the competition was interesting tonight. I don’t know it was the quality of the competitors in this group, but everyone seemed a bit more “animated” tonight, if that makes sense. I still think it’s hard to judge who stands out when it’s so robotic. I do think Oregon spoke well tonight, as well as South Carolina, Connecticut, Arkansas, and Georgia were among the best tonight. Overall, though, it did seem like this group seemed to try and stand out a little more. I don’t know if they observed last night or maybe got some feedback, or something? It seemed like their skills were a bit more fine honed. It makes sense-they got to see what happened last night and maybe saw what they needed to adjust.

Overall, Alpha is a much stronger group, in my opinion. I could easily see Miss America coming out of this group. I don’t have near as many for possibilities in Mu. Now comes the fun part-predicting who the top 15 is. It’s not as hard as I think. To me, there are ones that clearly excelled all week and some who really didn’t. There are some who I also think are strong possibilities. I am going to review the talent, go over generally what I saw from the contestants in the speaking categories, and then post about each contestant each week.

Look for Alpha talent review sometime early afternoon. Thanks everyone for dropping by and keep posting!
