Now in this case, it is hard to say because TX was standing out all night. It wasn't like she was a WTF winner. However, there are ethics involved here. Was it ethical for RBonney and Crystle to have a relationship with a large sponsor and then that person winning? It looks really bad. It is not ethical. It seems like RBonney was the only contestant who was asked to make a commercial for the plastic surgeon. Right now, it looks very bad. Perception is reality, but the contestants have been very vocal about what has been happening. Another issue was that RBonney was the featured contestant for Crystle's Miss Academy page.
It has been 25 years since Kate Shindle was crowned Miss America, and a few days later the story broke nationally about her father. The thing was-it went deeper than just her father being on the board. Her parents were volunteers for years. Gordon Shindle did not relinquish his position on the board until Kate won. She competed for several years and he never resigned his position. Vicki Gold Levi, who was heavily involved with the Miss America Organization, was one of the judges. There were preliminary judges from Broadway and between them and Vicki, that was a selected panel which would have heavily favored Kate. Between the longtime relationship with the Shindles and the MAO and then the judging panel, it was plain old not ethical. Furthermore, Gordon Shindle never returned to his position at the BOD. It looked as if he got what he wanted and his work was done. This story went national and of course, nothing happened. It was failed leadership from Horn. There were too many ethical rules broken, and the other contestants did not have a fair shot at the title. Was it "rigged?" Possibly. Was it unethical? Absolutely. And that is not to mention that Gordon Shindle could have easily described his daughter to the board of directors and Horn and told them that was the kind of contestant the MAO needed.
What is happening with USA is really giving a bad look to the organization and Crystle. Paula Shugart had to clean up the mess that Trump left and she did a very good job of that. Now there is a whole new era of controversy. I do understand the contestants' frustrations. The sad thing is, I do not think things will change. When the organization itself engages in its own unethical behavior, there isn't much recourse. And the FYI network aired the pageant but they are not going to do anything.
Sadly, I think this is going to be resolved. I am not sure that Crystle will lose her title if she owns the pageant now.
