Happy Miss America Eve! I had tried to get this together earlier and the day really got away from me. The MAOT pageant has just started. Truthfully, I am not interested enough in watching it.

I hope you are busy planning your tomorrow evening, good food, maybe a party? This week kind of snuck up on everyone, but it was an enjoyable week. The fashion show was very well done last night. They played music the first hour but once it started it was very nice. All the contestants had red gowns and walked the runway in them. Both the teen and Miss contestants wore dresses. I couldn't get exactly what but Jovani is partnering with Miss America. They also announced that Miss America is partnering with the American Heart Association, which is welcome news. To get back into the public eye, we do need to partner with some well-known charities.

I want to first state that if your favorite does not make the top 10 tomorrow night, please do not be upset. First of all, the competition this year is REALLY good. There are an above average number of contestants who are really shining and did everything right. There are only 10 spots with an 11th for the People's Choice. There could easily be a top 15 and it would be filled and still some deserving contestants could be left standing. It is absolutely no reflection on them. But the bigger issue is that there were only four judges for preliminary panels. You may get some really unusual results for the top 10, anyway. I trust that the cream will rise to the top. But once again, the results could be a bit unusual, and it is no fault of your favorite. You do the best you can, and I have no doubt each contestant gave it their very best. They can all feel proud of themselves. They are all still trying to compete amid a lot of changes in the system.

Keep in mind there are 10 spots open, 1 people's choice, and the potential of up to 9 preliminary winners in this year's format. Even under the old format not everyone made the top 10 and some not even the top 15. In the 2001 pageant, the only year with a top 20 Miss GA won a preliminary swimsuit award and was not in the top 20. In 2015 Miss IA won double preliminaries in Alpha, which was the toughest talent group of the week and failed to make the top 10. So, you really never know. I do not see any scenario in which all 8 preliminary winners make it into the top 10. So, here are my thoughts on the contestants and their chances:

DO NOT SEE ADVANCING-Although they did their best, I did not see anyone in this group who overall stood out over the more consistent competitors this week. Some might have even excelled in one competition but did not in the rest. They are:

AK-She attempted to do her own style of His Eye is on the Sparrow. I admire that she tried to make it original, but it did not seem to work that well. She did not stand out among the other competitors but I am sure Alaska is very proud of her.
CT-She seems like a lovely girl, she just really didn't stand out in any competition where I found her to be near the top of the group. I wish her the best for her future and she represents such a beautiful state.
DE-I mentioned to a previous poster that she seems quite ambitious and I have no doubt she will go far in life. She speaks very eloquently and always had a smile on her face. While she didn't stand out this week I am confident she will be a great Miss Delaware.
DC-Jade has won in 2 major systems and that in and of itself is impressive. I think it speaks to how talented and accomplished she is. Her talent was very good, she was a bit more laid back in other areas of competition. However, she's a lovely young woman and I admire her success in two programs.
IA-Unfortunately, she just didn't stand out to me this week in any of the different competitions. She did speak very nicely and was very heartfelt about her diabetes diagnosis and how competing in the Miss America system helped her. I am proud for everything she has accomplished.
KS-Courtney was really energetic in tap and she looked nice in gown. I just think overall, she didn't have enough spark to stand out from among the tough competition this week but I know she came at her absolute best. I wish her much success as she continues as Miss Kansas.
NV-She was very cute and entertaining in talent. I didn't think she stood out among the other contestants, but she always had a nice smile on her face and exuded a lot of happiness.
NM-She had a nice voice and was able to successfully take on Never Enough. She didn't quite stand out to me in other areas this week but I know she's got a bright future ahead of her in her beautiful state.
ND-She did very well with her onstage question and did well enough in talent. I just do not think she had enough to separate from the competition but she had a very good week and should be very proud of herself.
OH-I really enjoyed her this week. She is youthful, a good piano player and seems very goal oriented. I just am not sure she did enough to stand out in the tough competition but I think she's a wonderful young woman.
PA-She always had a nice smile on her face everything that she did, and she has a very unique and interesting platform regarding the environmental impact of the fashion industry. She seems to be very goal-oriented as well. I wish her the best and I would love to hear more about her platform.
SD-She was a very nice singer and I thought she looked great in her talent gown. The big question is did she pick it out before TSwift started showing up in red as well? (haha) She always had a nice smile on her face and I know did her very best all week.
VT-I think Yamuna is a very interesting and accomplished young woman. I have read a little bit about her and her life, and she seems quite fascinating. Although she didn't seem to set herself apart this week I trust she will go a long way in helping to educate our young people.
VA-I really, really liked that she chose emotional abuse as a platform and I enjoyed her talent. I just did not see some of the energy of previous Miss Virginias but I really do like her and I really think she showed us who she was this week. I got a clear sense of her and I liked what I have seen. Best of luck to her in her future, it's going to be a bright one.
WY-She is a very pretty girl and I think she would thrive in the USA system. I really hope she gives it a try there. She is tall and has a commanding presence. She also had a young, chic wardrobe. While I did not think she stood out among this year's competition I think she has a lot of potential for other pageant systems, and I hope she gives it a try.

LONGSHOTS-I would not be totally shocked to see any one of these in the top 10 but I am leaning towards not:

CA-She did very well in fitness in gown; in fact, I would have not been surprised to see her as a preliminary winner in each. Her talent was a bit weaker for me, she just sounded so stiff and wasn't able to really connect with it. I just didn't get anything from her that would really put her into the top 10, though.
IL-I really liked her all week, and I really liked her talent. She didn't quite stand out as much as some of the others and seemed not as strong as some of the Miss Illinois of the last few years, but I do think she put her best foot forward. I am just not sure she was quite at the level of top 10.
KY-I think gown was her strongest category and she comes from a state which has no shortage of success at Miss America. That is why I am not counting her out. Realistically, I am not sure she is as competitive as some of the others.
LA-She also comes from a state with no shortage of success at Miss America, and I know she is at her best. Her talent was definitely entertaining. I am just not sure she stood out in other categories enough.
MN-She is very cute and I liked her vibe. She has had a good competition, and she was consistent in all categories. I think it would all come down to interview.
MO-I think she was on the better end of average for all of her competitions but she did not quite have the spark that would have set her apart. I think she was actually wise to change her talent for Miss America, and she did a nice tap dance. I liked her costume, too.
NE-She was a beautiful dancer, and I loved everything about her performance. She might not have stood out as much as some of the others and Nebraska is having some success at Miss America, so I wouldn't be totally shocked to see her.
NJ-I hope she gets an NFT if we do not see her in the top 10. She gave a beautiful, heartfelt performance of Over The Rainbow. It was really nice. I didn't think she stood out to me in other categories enough, and that is why I do not necessarily have her solidly in contention.
WA-She was doing well the first night of competition, and she is really cute and fresh. I just think her talent was a bit weaker and because of that, she might not make the top 10. But I did think she was very likeable and I know she's got a bright future ahead of her.

ANY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING I COULD SEE IN THE TOP 10, HERE IS HOW I BREAK THEM DOWN:

DECENT POSSIBILITY-All of these contestants have been not the loudest or have "the most" presence but have been consistent and performing well throughout the week:

AZ-Tiffany is one of my pleasant surprises of the week. She looked good in fitness and gown and I was really impressed with what she did with Because You Loved Me. I would have given her a 7 in just about every category, and that consistency can help you get into the top 10.
FL-I saw the state pageant and she did very well, but I am not sure she has brought that fire this week. She seemed a bit off the first night, she bumbled her words a bit when she spoke in OSQ, didn't seem confident in fitness or like something was off. She recovered nicely the second night with a strong talent. She wasn't quite consistent all week and seemed a bit off but the state reputation alone makes her at least a consideration for the top 10.
HI-She is also another contestant like AZ who while didn't knock every category out of the park was very consistent. HI contestants bring the aloha spirit and Star does seem to have a special spark to her. She just reminds me of one of those contestants that if they like her, she will go far.
ID-She was another one of my pleasant surprises this week. I noticed her a lot on the first night. Her talent would have been just fine if she stayed with piano. Sadly, some people do not see athletic talent as something to be judged, but I do. I think she nealty figured out how to do both. She is probably one of Idaho's strongest representatives in a long time at MAO.
ME-With her preliminary talent win she has to be at least considered. I didn't see much from her the first night but she also has something very unique about her. I hate the phrase "typical pageant girl" but she's really not. If that resonated with the judges we may see her the top 10. For many reasons, I would like to see her there.
MA-Had Chelsea not made that unfortunate talent choice I would have had her in the next category. Talent is only 20 percent but it does make a difference because there have been many well-rounded contestants. She is highly intelligent and if she so eloquently told the judges in interview how she could fix the MAO's problems I think she sold them. She is also pleasant and likeable, and she's a great young woman. If she doesn't make it it's probably the talent.
MT-She is another one of my favorite pleasant surprises this week. She is definitely the best Miss Montana has sent in years. Like some of the others while she doesn't scream stage presence, there is something about her. She has been very consistent all week and I would LOVE to see Montana have some success. If there is any year, this would be it.
NH-Another one this week who is a pleasant surprise. She has identified herself as a doctor, and she has been very consistent all week. I like her spark-she definitely has one. She seems very intelligent, and there's something about her energy that is very positive. Her talent was engaging. I think that's a word I would use with her-engaging. I think if she engages the judges well we will see her in the top 10. She definitely has charisma.
OR-Allison is very cute and she seems to have something that draws you in. Once again, she has been consistent all week. Also, OR has had big successes the past two years and I believe that they are program whose time has arrived. I could very easily see another top 10 this year and based on her likeability I think she could go far.
RI-I keep saying this but she is another one of my favorite pleasant surprises this week. She has been consistent and although she doesn't have the loudest charisma, she has an understated elegance. Her talent was a nice performance of Imagine, done with just the right amount of energy. I really would love to see her.
SC-She is iffy for me, perhaps the most iffy of the whole competition. You definitely notice her onstage; she's got a great look. She did look nice in gown, and her talent was spoken with passion in her voice. I said that she resonated with people in the audience but to be fair, it could have been her own cheering section. I just don't know, because she has been inconsistent and sometimes a little off her game as well.

COULD REALISTICALLY MAKE TOP 10:
AR-She is a very strong possibility for me. She has been good all week, her talent probably scored very well. Her state is certainly successful at Miss America. After a few years out I think it's time for them to return, and Cori has been strong all week.
GA-Georgia is successful enough and has a great program that whoever they send you must consider a chance at the top 10. Tara has certainly been consistent across this week and she has a commanding way of speaking. I could easily see her in the top 10.
IN-Speaking of pleasant surprises, she has been VERY consistent this week. She really shined in every competition, including talent. Of all of the contestants this week, I felt like I connected WITH her. I know what she is about, who she is, and what she brings to the table. She has one of those unique qualities where she really reflects herself when she competes. Indiana hasn't had much success since Katie Stam, but I really think that could change this year. I really hope that we see her in the top 10. She's certainly done enough all week to earn it.
MI-With the preliminary win she's got to be considered for the top 10. She is really cute and she may not be the most memorable in each category, but she's also got something very likeable. Sort of like Teresa Scanlan, only a little more mature and polished. She is just one of those contestants who if the judges like I could see going very far.
MS-With her preliminary fitness win you cannot count her out. Also, based on state reputation and success alone, I have her here. If she was from another state I'd say no. Also her talent is if I am being honest, subpar to some others I have seen this week. But with the win and state reputation she has to be at least considered for the top 10. Of all of these I am mentioning she would be the least surprising not to see advance.
UT-She has been extremely consistent this week, including in talent. UT always sends a talented winner and this year is no exception. Sarah really shines onstage, you notice her, she always has a nice smile that conveys enthusiasm. If UT sends a good candidate we usually see them in the top 10. I really see that as a possibility this year, and I see her going far if that happens.

MY STRONGEST POSSIBILITIES FOR THE TOP 10:
AL-She won preliminary gown and she was strong in talent as well. AND this is Alabama who is usually a staple of the top 10. I think she's a lock for the top 10 and possibly the top 5. She's just about firmly in for me.
CO-Madison has been very consistent all week, and like Indiana, she is the few who I really got to know onstage. You know exactly who she is. She also has the kind of resume Miss America loves. I think all of those things will get her into the top 10.
MD-With two preliminary wins, I think she is a lock for the top 10. Her talent was consistent enough, and I feel like her platform is young and relevant. It would really be nice to see Maryland finally have a Miss America.
NY-Miss NY always also has to be considered as a top 10 potential as of late, and Amelia is certainly well-prepared through all of her experience here and Volunteer America. That being said, I am just keeping it real. She seemed stronger at Volunteer America than she is this week at Miss America. Look at Victoria Hill who competed at Miss America and then wasn't as strong at Miss Volunteer America. She did well enough on her dancing but I have seen better when she competed at Volunteer America. I am a big fan of Amelia and would want her to do well; I think she might have done better with a little more energy. But she's still going to have the best competitive edge going into tomorrow night.
NC-She was memorable the first night and after that amazing talent, she catapulted into a top contender. There are no holes in her competition, she has strong presence as well. Of the talent winners she is the one I could see in the top 5.
OK-Sunny has been on fire all week, no pun intended. She is shining throughout the competition and she absolutely has her A game. She did at Miss Oklahoma as well, but her talent has improved since then. While she's not the best singer she made the most of the song. Of the non-preliminary winners she has been the most consistent to me.
TN-She had a really great week, including a preliminary win. I had her high in gown and she did impress in swimsuit. Her talent is certainly good enough, not outstanding, but I have seen a lot less win. She has been very consistent, confident, and she really has brought her A game. She is a solid contender for me.
TX-She's Miss TX after all. I am going to be honest-her presence hasn't been overwhelming this week, somewhat like Averie last year. They both seem a little bit more subdued than at their Miss TX pageant. However, I could probably say the same of Ellie at Miss TX. I do not think she has to have a lot of overwhelming presence to make you notice her elegance. She just has something about the way she carries herself and even though her talent isn't perfect, she has something about her that draws you in. She is young and contemporary and I think she looks like a young woman of today with a touch of regal.
WI-Lila is doing great all week. She definitely has energy, her talent was probably second best to me on talent night, although ME was very good as well. Look, Wisconsin is one of those states where if they have someone with potential they see it every time at Miss America. Lila does have strong talent, was memorable on the first night and has a lot of stage presence. Although it is not likely I haven't totally ruled out back-to-back wins for Wisconsin. I am not sure she is quite as strong as Grace but she's got a lot going for her.

So, who do I see winning?

Truthfully I am not sure. If they are going strictly by competition it could be anyone's to win. I have seen a lot of strong competition all week. This could go many different ways. We do not even really have an idea of who will be in the top 10. It could be filled with more surprises than the same old same old. I did look over the judging panel for final night and they definitely have an entertainment focus. I do think they would gravitate towards a younger, modern-type winner. If that is the case I could definitely see TX take it, also OK. If they are looking for a classic winner with a marketable talent, I could see it going to NC. But I really am not sure. Here's a longshot prediction, without any real basis, just a possibility: I could see either NY or TX missing the finals. I am saying this because they are usually so certain but nothing is guaranteed. I did see somewhat of a dropoff in Amelia's energy this week and while it makes sense to have her there, nothing is certain. Also with Ellie, although I would love to see her win her energy is a bit off as well. I know it's hard to say when she won a preliminary but she does have a somewhat quieter vibe than at Miss TX. So, I just don't know. I could be totally wrong, but I do not see this out of the realm of possibility because there have been many other contestants who have stepped up to the game this week. If they are going for cute/personable like Teresa and Cara, I am going to say MI. People like to see interesting crowd-pleasing talent. I could see her getting some invitations from morning shows to stop by and do that. I could also see CO as an overall strong pick. Let's face it-Miss America has never shied away from picking a strongly motivated winner. Grace (nuclear engineering), Camille, Cara (in law school), Teresa (now in law school), Deidre (physician), Erika (lawyer) the list goes on.

So, tomorrow night is going to be interesting, if anything! Who are your picks? Please let us know.

Miss Wisconsin became Miss America 1973. She crowned Miss Colorado Miss American 1974. Miss Colorado crowned Miss Texas Miss America 1975. That began 50 years ago.

Miss Wisconsin became Miss America in 2023. She crowned her successor Miss Colorado in 1974.

Last year Miss TX was 2nd runner-up. This year she was first runner-up.

TX is winning next year.

This is tongue in cheek but really interesting nonetheless.

TX first runner-up
IN second runner-up
KY third runner-up
RI fourth runner-up

Perhaps one of my favorite top 3s ever. Each of them would have been amazing. I truly thought Ellie had it.

Plenty more to say, I need a bit of a breather right now!

There seemed to be a lot of buzz about this. I will give Robin and whoever decided this credit. I do think they tried to mix it up and try something different. Or, maybe not. Maybe it was a way to move quickly through the competition and save money. I had concerns about having talent all in one night for the contestants, but especially for judging. I can definitively say that sitting through 51 talents without as much of a 5 minute intermission was difficult. You did feel like it dragged on. What might have excited you if talent was throughout the night like it had been before wasn't just as exciting. For example, there were some really good/entertaining talents at the end including Alabama and Arkansas. If you are dragging on and getting bored or wishing for it to be over, the contestant might not be judged fairly. And that's what I think might have happened last night.

From a viewer with no contestant I am actively involved with, I think it needs to change back. Even if there are only two competition nights it would be better to sit through even 26 and 25 in one long evening versus 51 without a break. I think that scheduling this simultaneously with the teen pageant WITH a big talent competition is what sunk this idea. From what it seems like, it started late last night because they were still trying to finish from the teen competition. I am not against having both competitions at the same time but 100 talents in the span of 5 hours is simply not practical.

And the hostesses-they were the WORST I have ever seen. I will be the first to say that hosting pageants is a skill that likely takes practice and fine tuning over time. If Lindsay was a MAO titleholder she might have had some experience hosting Miss MD at some point. Not everybody knows how to do it. That was painfully obvious last night. They kept ad libbing and making comments about the contestants, they and others could be heard talking on the microphone while contestants were performing. And then it came to a screeching halt when they were confused over Miss NC and Miss KS. It was really, really bad.

Three words for next year: GET DENA QUERBAN.

I cannot imagine you will see this for a second year in a row. This is just one person's opinion, I am sure people in person have their opinions and I certainly know the contestants will.

I am going to watch the fashion show at 7. I am not overly interested but I am paying for it so I might as well take advantage.

Tomorrow I will post my full predictions but I'll be stopping by to answer any questions or give feedback if you would like on any contestant.

VA-ballet, Paint It Black I liked this. The arrangement of the song was good, it was an instrumental but it had some good energy and captured the vibe of the song. I liked the costume, it was pretty and she had some good skills. The only distraction, and I hope production did not decide this, is they kept flashing lights on the floor. I imagine it could be very distracting. 7 for me

IL-flag routine, The Call I really liked this as well. It is a talent we do not see a whole lot but it very nice nonetheless. She did a good job with it, I could feel her emotional connection to the music, and she "convinced" me with her performance. 7

MT-vocal, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again MT has been one of my favorite pleasant surprises, and this was a nice surprise for me. She has a nice, clearly trained voice. She didn't shout the song, she handled the emotions and key changes appropriately, and she has such a nice, smooth voice. I remember when Stacy Momeyer, Miss AZ 1997 sang this and her voice just filled Convention Hall. I imagine that the same thing would have happened under different circumstances. Very well done. 7.5 to 8.

AK-piano/vocal, His Eye is on the Sparrow. She did attempt a fresh attempt on this, but her voice was a bit flat. I admire the chance she took with it, it is a traditional gospel song and I like creativity, I just do not think the performance itself was good. It was a bit mediocre. 5

NH-vocal, Come Rain or Come Shine This was a solid performance, IMO. It was a classic and she sang it with enthusiasm, a nice Broadway style performance. I really enjoyed it. I haven't mentioned her much but she has impressed me this week. A good 7.5 from me on this performance.

MI-speed painting, Beat It. This was a preliminary winning performance. Obviously I did not reflect the judges feelings about this song. In my scoring along, I gave it a 6. I have seen more "dynamic" presentations with livelier music, and a more dramatic finish. Please do not interpret this as I do not like Maya, I think she's very cute and fresh and I could see her going a long way if the judges think so as well. I just thought it was a bit gimmicky and she did the smiling at the audience and hamming it up more than some other speed painting I have seen. But, if it is scored as something the public would want to see again then I suppose they went with the entertainment factor.

GA-lyrical dance, I Surrender She did a nice job with this. Her costume was very pretty, she flowed nicely with the music, it wasn't overdone, just very pretty. I gave it a solid 7.

NM-vocal, Never Enough She has a decent voice. There were a few sour notes at the end but she did have the voice to be able to take on this song successfully. There are many who I have heard who do not. Overall, I gave it a 7.5.

NV-fiddle,Millionaire's Hoedown. She was cute and entertaining. The song was upbeat and she moved around the stage, seeming to have a good time. 7

CT-dance, Feeling Good This was another performance for me which was somewhat mediocre. It just moved a bit slowly and I didn't feel as connected as I did to the other dancers. It lacked a bit of energy. 5

VT-vocal, Listen This is a huge song to take on if you do not have the pipes for it. Caressa did, unfortunately, this was not a good performance. She just didn't have the ability to take this on. It was a bit off key, and she couldn't handle the high notes. 5

HI-poetry loss and moving on from grief. This seemed more like a monologue rather than a poem. However, I really connected with the message. It was about grief about losing someone and being able to move on. It was very relatable and I really connected with her on a personal level. A strong 7.5. This definitely was not a fluff performance. It was very heartfelt.

AL-vocal, When You Believe Very lovely. She has a nice, strong voice, it was a nice performance much like Indiana where she didn't need to scream, she just needed to connect with the emotions of the song. It was one of the better vocals of the night, especially pop vocals. A solid 8.5 from me.

AR-tap dance 9 to 5 Very entertaining, the remix of 9 to 5 was a good one, it had a lot of energy. Her performance was energetic, enjoyable, and fun. If there was any dance from last night where I think the judges would have rewarded a dance performance, this would have been it. 8

TN-jazz dance, medley from Hamilton. She had a solid enough performance, it was certainly on par with everything else she has done this week. I would have given it a 7; it wasn't exceptional, just solid and consistent like she has been all week.

NJ-vocal, Over The Rainbow. We have heard this song at least 15 million times in pageant land. She made me feel like I had never heard it before. It was very heartfelt, soulful, and she very much just sang from everything in her. It was a wonderful performance. 8.5

TX-rhythmic gymnastics, Hold My Hand. You all know how much I like her, and it pains me to say this, but it was one of the weaker of the night. Her energy wasn't really there. It is the same as at Miss TX and she won a very competitive state with it, so if all of the other aspects are there she will be fine. I just didn't get a lot of energy from it. 5

And there you have it! I am going to post an overall reflection next.

OH-piano, Moonlight Sonata She wasn't as strong as the other classical pianists, but it was decent. It seemed a bit less dynamic than WI, for example, but solid enough. 7 to 7.5.

OR-violin, The Storm (Vivaldi) I thought it was spirited and entertaining. It was mentioned that this was the same talent selection as Grace last year, and part of the beauty of this piece is that you do get to show energy with it. I thought was a solid performance and she was engaged with her playing. 7

DC-operatic vocal O Mio Babbino Caro This was the first talent of the night that I felt was really strong besides UT. Jade has a very nice voice. It sounded as if she might have had a bit of hoarseness or that she had a problem with the microphone, but it didn't matter. I forgot to mention her last night but she was one of the better talents of the night. 8

LA-jazz dance, Hit Me With a Hot Note. She was probably one of the best dancers up to that time. She was entertaining and kept up the energy throughout the song. I am certainly not a well-trained dancer (I danced when I was a child, took lessons for 6 years) so I cannot tell the technical aspects but she seemed to have good movement. 7.5

SD-vocal, Blank Space. She had a good Broadway type voice and performance. There were a few sour notes at the end and some were a little high for her to take on, but you can tell she's got a good voice. 6 to 6.5

KS-tap dance, Shake Your Groove Thing Lots of energy from Courtney. As far as entertainment value and energy, this had a lot of it. I liked her costume, it was a pretty sky blue that matched her coloring. It wasn't to the level of a Nicole Messina but it was certainly good enough. 7.5

NC-operatic vocal, with the confusion I did not get the title We rarely see 10 talents at Miss America; I can't think of the last one. This was a 10 talent. She has an amazing voice, I would put her up with Marisol Montalvo and Helen Goldsby. I am just about certain we see her Sunday night and you will be blown away. I cannot also stress enough how well she handled the confusion and being asked what she was performing for talent.

OK-vocal, My Man It was probably hard to follow that but she held her own. Her vocal skills and presentation improved since the OK state pageant. I would have given in a solid 6.5 but if the judges had to give a 7 it wasn't that strong, so I would say 6.

IA, vocal, I'm a Star It was a mediocre performance. She seemed a bit off key and there were some sour notes at the end. 5

NE-contemporary dance, What Was I Made For. Nebraska has been sending some beautiful dancers of late, including 2021 who I thought was a strong possibility for the top 10. This was another beautiful contemporary dance-she just flowed effortlessly, she seemed very light yet her movement was very good. It was a performance which really worked on so many levels. 8

MN-Latin dance, Don't Stop the Party. It was entertaining, she chose her costume well, and it had a lot of energy. She seemed to have good movement and overall, it was a fun performance. 7.5

FL-operatic vocal, Sempre Libera She also had a good voice like Jade. Strong performance, it was hard to hear opera after NC killed it but she was definitely very solid and done very well. 8

AZ-vocal, Because You Loved Me I think when a contestant tackles Celine Dion they've got to do it well. This was not her belting out in a Celine way, this was an originally styled performance of the song. While it didn't blow me out of the park like some others, it was nonetheless very pretty and original. 7.5

MD-ballroom dance, Conga I know that a lot of people were going to paying a lot of attention to her because she is a double preliminary winner. It was definitely entertaining, she kept good pace with the music, It isn't the stuff that dreams are made of but Cara won with less of a talent. Overall I would give it a 7 to 7.5 for entertainment value and costume. I couldn't give it an 8 so they probably scored it around a 7 if they were thinking like me.

IN-vocal, I'll Be There Once again, she is doing well in each competition. She has a nice voice, she sang with a lot of emotion. I felt pulled into her performance. She didn't oversing some of the notes she could have ala Mariah Carey, she just sang a very nice performance. I forgot to mention her last night but she was a very solid talent for me. 8

WI-piano, Revolutionary Etude She did very well with this. It was a spirited performance, very well played, she was very energetic and drew you into the excitement of it. A solid 9 for me. It was an example of the good piano playing you expected from years past.

CO-HERstory, flying an airplane. This is exactly what a HERstory should be. It had a strong message about her learning to fly. She was costumed well including having earphones, there was related music playing in the background. This is the kind of performance that you should aspire to if you are giving a HERstory talent. You really have to make it about the overall presentation, and she did. I also found it to be inspiring. Solid 8 for me.

Here are the first 17 contestants.

ID-Fantasie Impromptu with a second half basketball routine. I appreciated its uniqueness. I felt like probably she wanted to showcase skills that weren't generally appreciated. She would have certainly done well with playing piano, she did a good job with it. I suppose I would give it a 7 overall.

DE-tap dance, Devil Went Down to Georgia. She had some energy at the beginning of the song but it slowed down for the second half. It wasn't anything that would have set her apart from the crowd. 6

MO-tap dance, Baby I'm a Star. She maintained her energy throughout the dance, she had a dazzling costume, good entertaiment overall. 6.5

UT-piano, La Campanella. Probably not as strong as WI but she definitely gave a good performance. You can tell she has good skills. 8

KY-vocal, I Who Have Nothing. The singing was good but the performance was really weird. She overacted a bit, some over-the-top gestures that took away from the effectiveness of the song. You don't have to overperform the song, the lyrics and emotion are enough. I would give it a 6 for overall attempt.

WA-jazz dance Salute. The performance itself was a bit weaker. Her costume was cute, it was a pink version of Janet Jackson in Rhythm Nation. 5

CA-HERstory, equine involvement. It was a good story about her life, but she sounded rehearsed and robotic. I had a hard time connecting with her emotionally because she was so rehearsed.I would give it a 6 overall.

PA-clarinet, Festive Overture. I6t was an okay performance, decent but not a standout. 6

NY-contemporary dance, Beyonce medley. I have seen Amelia dance many times now but this is a performance which did not blow me away of hers. I can't explain, it just wasn't a blow you away type of performance when I have seen her do one before. It certainly wasn't bad but I think had she been on she could have contended for a preliminary win. 7.75

ME-aerial routine. Tchaikovsky was playing in the background. It's hard to explain an aerial act-we have all seen one. I would say that it really was entertaining, unique, and she displayed a lot of talent. 8.5 for me

WY-HERstory motivational. It was very generic, I couldn't get the gist of why she was never giving up. It was a weaker performance. 5

MS-jazz dance, I Wanna Dance with Somebody. It was okay, it wasn't anything that would have set her apart from the competition tonight. 6

RI-vocal, Imagine. It was understated but very nice. She has a nice voice and it came through nicely. 7

WV-HERstory teaching. I really liked her relatability, she spoke from her heart about being a teacher. I felt like I could emotionally connect with her. 7

ND-vocal, As If We Never Said Goodbye. It was decent, she had some nice moments, a few sour notes and a nice ending. 6.5

MA-piano, Beat It. Chelsea is a fantastic classical piano player who when I first heard her thought she could win a talent preliminary at Miss America. I have no idea who told her or suggested to her that it was a good idea to change her talent. Maybe she was concerned that she would blend in with the pianists. You all know what a big fan I am of hers, but I am afraid she just killed her chances for the top 10. She also used an accompanying track which was way off. It wasn't good. It was perhaps the weakest of the night, I will just leave it at that. I hate to post something like this about someone so talented, but it was probably the biggest faux pas I have seen at Miss America.

SC-HERstory, women/feminism. To the poster who said it was like Barbie, it was. I am not sure she was allowed to copy it verbatim, but it was similar. It was a lot of contrasting in examples. She used a passionate tone of voice and it did seem to resonate with some of the audience members. I would give it a solid 7.

And there is group 1! Iill post the second and third groups tomorrow.

Talent is ready to start!

This moves VERY quickly, and it is hard if they group the contestants like they did last night to type and observe at the same time. So, what I likely will do is post at the end of each group and then do a complete rundown of contestant talent selections, because I know a lot of people enjoy seeing them.

I'll be starting in around 2 minutes!

Good evening!

This year, the competition is really rocking! There are a LOT of quality contestants this year. I would say in any given year that there are maybe 20 contestants who could make the cut. This year I am telling you there are going to be some quality contestants who do not make the top 10. There are a lot of contestants who are really standing out. But...

There are only four judges. I was thinking about my college statistics or research course (I forget which one) but they said that even numbers do not work out well for polling or something where you need to make a one or the other decision. It is usually why there was an odd number of judges. There are four judges total. In my opinion, you need more to get a consensus. So, do not be surprised if your favorite does not make it. I think it is going to be VERY interesting with no composite scoring. In a way, I like that idea. It is not clear, at least it wasn't tonight, who is judging. If it is the same panel they might go with the same contestants they liked in preliminaries.

Thinking about the preliminary winners yes, it is obvious the judges are liking Maryland. See the below post about the breakdown of the preliminary scoring. They are looking for well-rounded young woman. There are PLENTY of good contestants and this is just the first night. So many of them really brought their A game and they are determined to stand out. There might have been around only 5 tonight where I think they probably aren't going to advance. Another thing I wanted to mention is the pleasant surprises for me. Tonight, the Is have it-Idaho, Indiana, and Rhode Island. Idaho is strong this year. You notice her in each competition, and she is very articulate. Indiana, same thing. She has great stage presence, seems alive in each competition and I felt connected to her when she spoke. Rhode Island is not in your face but shining nicely and confidently. Arizona I noticed tonight. Colorado had a strong night, I thought. The way that she spoke she seems to have the achievement background that they like at Miss America. I thought Michigan was very fresh and likeable, I like how she wore a scarf that she designed, it was very pretty.

Of the ones that did not win a preliminary, the most consistent for me which were not mentioned above were Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin. I haven't seen many talents but I know Massachusetts is good as well as New York. Oklahoma is a little weaker. Utah always sends good talent. Wisconsin is really coming on strong to me.

Now, to the preliminary winners. None of these were out of left field to me, though I think there were many who were "better." It just comes down to individual judges preference. It is hard to get a good consensus with four judges. I suppose on the flip side judging can be all over the place with 5 or 7 different opinions. I really liked Maryland and Tennessee tonight. Both of them stood out to me in each category. I liked Maryland's platform. It is regarding educating parents on apps and what might be dangerous, etc. It was something that when I heard her, it made a lot of practical sense to me. I also really liked Tennessee in all aspects of competition. Her platform is about, if I understand correctly, mindfulness and other alternative mindsets and psychology in sports. Anyone who has played competitive sports would have agreed with her about the words and verbal abuse that often goes on. She really did stand out to me. AL didn't stand out to me as much. I think she did well all night but she is one of the ones I would have had several others ahead of. MS I thought was good in fitness, some others were a bit better but she was certainly no surprise. She has an overall good look, is consistent. I would like to see what her talent is like. She's not a strong top 10 for me but given the state history I wouldn't be surprised to see her on Sunday evening. Texas-yes, she looks really good. I have always liked her platform and once again, I really think she would have a great story and be able to help bridge the gap between law enforcement and a public which is often at odds. She looked good in fitness as well. I know her talent is a bit weaker but I think the gown win should be enough to put her in the top 10.

I was thinking about if Maryland was the frontrunner. I said so initially but upon rethinking it, it is really hard to tell with only four judges. Obviously she impressed them in both categories. If you go by state competitions, it is really hard to tell. Sometimes they are the clear winner, sometimes they end up as runner-up. In 2015 nobody will ever forget the double preliminary winner Iowa not making the top 10. I am sure she's headed for the top 10 and likely top 5 but it is hard to say.

To address the poster about the USA and what Robin is going for-yes, it is markedly different. The fitness and evening gown competitions really have a USA vibe. It unfortunately was what Miss America fans have been saying would have made the difference for years. The difference is nobody is going to see these preliminaries aside of the die hards. Is it too USA? That's an interesting question. We will see after the talent competition tomorrow night. Branding it as Miss America's Got Talent is hardly going to bring folks in. The irony is that the USA and even Universe competition has gotten very "Miss America" over the years with achievement, stories, girl-next-door/religious vibe.

The production was a lot better than I thought it would be, admittedly. After the disaster of 2021 I think everyone was a bit scared. But this was very nice, the stage was very nice. You realize you are not in Convention Hall anymore but it did have a very nice stage. I am glad I never have to hear the fitness song again LOL. The only thing I do not like is no intermission. Tomorrow night will be a hoot with 51 talents. I am not sure how long the talents are? If they are a minute and a half that is around an hour and 15 minutes of actual competition but between fillers/moving pianos, etc. it will be a while. I just think and hope a lot of people do not shut down after a while. The contestants towards the end are really going to have to wow because I know it is going to drag. Everything tonight felt very rushed. There is nothing wrong with an intermission.

A few more thoughts/observations:

New York's platform is menstrual equity. It is a very progressive platform that was championed by none other than Meghan Markle. The palace was reported not to like it. My guess is Miss America will feel the same way. If there was a competition to be lost because MAO would not like it, it is this. I am just keeping it real.

Maine-is an openly gay contestant. She is only the second behind MO 2016.

Virginia's platform is regarding emotional abuse and relationship abuse. I think it is great to talk about and have a conversation about.

New Jersey's platform regarding having sister libraries in New Jersey and Africa seems very intruiging. I would want to hear more about this! As I mentioned below, she and New Mexico were mixed up. They allowed them to come back and compete properly. They also said the wrong first name. But for NJ fans she was ever classy and handled it very well.

So, there you have it, night 1! I will be live commenting tomorrow night. Although this was comprehensive if anyone has any other questions please let me know and I will be glad to answer them.

I am still here. I had a bit of a scare, though. Back in May, I started with some severe health issues. I wasn't able to really do much of anything and was too exhausted to post. I am feeling better now, although near not perfect. Definitely on an upward trend. My apologies to those who came here with all that ridiculous spam. I saw a post asking the board to be deleted. Not happening, I have a long history here ;) But it does get frustrating, I will admit that.

I did get to see some of the state competitions which were available on Pageants Live and was impressed with what I saw. I will post more about that later. For now, the pageant is in 2 weeks so I will definitely be posting about that in its entirety. I am reluctantly purchasing, and I cannot state RELUCTANTLY enough, the 2 bit 2 night preliminary competition. It is WAY overpriced at $99 especially if you do not want to see the teen competition. I have seen people complain about Pageants Live but for $33 a month you got a full competition including the final night. I am glad that it will be on Youtube for all to see final night but way to stick it to those who want to see the preliminaries. In future years I am not sure I will pay that much. Just to note: I have no problems paying for any preliminary or program which I want to see. The issue is that for what you are getting, is it a fair price? Two nights of competition, no. It is entirely overpriced.

However, from what I have been reading, I am not sure how many more years there is going to be a national pageant. They cannot seem to get out of debt, secure sponsorships, locations for the pageant, and it seems like there are severe issues with the way things are being run. It looks like contestants haven't gotten their scholarships, and that is a serious problem. Although I am not an expert at the legal behind this it would seem as a breach of contract and not being compensated for services provided or promised. I am not exaggerating when I say the Miss America Organization could cease to exist at the national level. It isn't a good time for pageants in general, USA/Universe has major problems, too.

But for now, we will enjoy. Please stop back often for commentary. Glad to be with all of you again! Best wishes for a better 2024.

A frontrunner has emerged with Maryland, I am not surprised. She had a good night. I was not totally surprised with MS or TN either. TN is having a really strong competition, I think. I still love TX and congrats to AL too.

But there is GOOD competition this year. More thoughts shortly! There are a LOT of good contestants.

I am disappointed to see that one of the Teen Prelim judges is from the group "Moms for Liberty." That group is well-known for their stance against LGBTQ rights. They have worked aggressively to ban books, particularly when it comes to the LGBTQ community. I don't believe someone from that group should be judging the pageant. And that particular judge also holds strong religious beliefs that are not consistent with girls who are from any other religion. For example, if a teen contestant is a Jewish lesbian, she stands zero chance of getting a good score from that judge. No one from a group like that - including the far left groups too - should ever judge at Miss America. They are too politically and religiously focused.

I wish I could say that I was excited, but this has been overall so low key that I really can't get into it. Maybe once things start.

I am going to be watching the preliminaries and commenting live, so please stop back. I am not sure if they will have awards for one large group or how they were divided for interview. I will post any information about that when it comes up.

Probably what I will do is post my impressions live and then come back and do a rundown of talent selections, platforms, etc. It is near impossible as much as they rush through the competition to list that information live.

If any of you have any questions or want feedback on a certain contestant please let me know and I will be glad to respond.

Happy Wednesday! I hope you all had a great new year and I wish you the best for 2024.

I watched the state pageants on Pageants Live and some others, and I was impressed. I will talk about the ones which were available and what my thoughts are on the winner.

TX-The granddaddy of the pageants. The beauty of TX is that whoever is in that top 5 could easily be competitive at Miss America. This year I saw some contestants with real potential, including the preliminary talent winner who played the violin and was in the top 10 (I forget her name.) Ellie EARNED that win. She was fantastic. That was going to be a battle between her and Madison Matlock until the end and she absolutely rose to the occasion. I said last year that Averie Bishop was who made sense to me would end Texas' drought at Miss America. She certainly did well, but I also think that Ellie could make a case for herself at Miss America. The only weaker thing about her is her talent, but when has talent actually mattered? She really is a pretty girl, she looks fantastic in an evening gown, and she has something personal about her that I really like. She seems regal yet very humble and there's something about her that you are drawn to. She looks like a young 21st century American woman, and she seems like she would be relatable to young women. Another thing that I like about her is her platform. I think she would be an excellent bridge between law enforcement and others, and I think she might be able to bring a human, reasonable voice to the fractured relationship between law enforcement and the public. I am taking a very close look at her as a possible Miss America.

About Madison Matlock-people think she is a lock for Miss TX; they have the past two years by virtue of her aunt. I will say this much-if TX is political, she will win one of these years, especially if her aunt and grandparents are large benefactors. If her last name was Matlock there is about a 99 percent chance we wouldn't be having this conversation. She is a good competitor and there is no doubt her aunt is coaching her. There is also no doubt in my mind that she's got the best resources to be able to compete. She is definitely old school, and old school works in TX. But if she wins next summer, it will be 19 years removed from her aunt. Morgan has very little clout in the pageant world. With judges from outside TX and some who likely have no idea who she is, I do not think she is a lock for the TX crown based on her name. Also, there are contestants in any given year who are going to be ready to win the next year. So, I really am not certain she is going to win. I am 50/50 on her.

OK-I really like Sunny. She is very pretty; she reminds me of a young Sophia Lauren. Like TX, she also has something that draws you to her. She also has a compelling story in the Miss America system. I have wondered how the older contestants will fare this year. If I were a judge and a contestant told me how much they persevered to get there, it would suggest to me that she has a lot of determination and would be a great Miss America. Sunny did very well in the fitness competition. I am not sure why the last few Miss OKs did not make the cut at Miss America but they are not a state to count out. I think she has a good chance at going very far at Miss America.

MO-When the top 5 was called, I had Hayley and the first runner-up as the most well-rounded to me. Hallie Hebron's older sister Erika was Miss MO and Hallie has good talent. I thought she performed a little better last year, but I still thought she had a chance at winning. Hayley seems to have a lot going for her. The only question mark for me is that she is one of many who is doing a monologue. I thought her message was good but there are so many motivational monologues/monologues about the program that I think it is going to be hard to distinguish themselves.

AR-I also like Cori, I think she is very well-rounded and let's face it, AR always sends the best contestants. I was a bit mystified as to why AR has fallen off the radar the past few years but I do not expect them to stay away that long. I think Cori is solid for the top 10.

KY-I am just going to keep it real. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Chapel Tinius and I was disappointed that she did not win. She's been stalling the past few years. She is a former teen winner and heaven knows they do well in this pageant, so I do see her as a future Miss KY. Truth be told, I was paying such close attention to her that I really didn't pay much attention to Mallory. KY overall hasn't been as competitive at Miss America as of late, although it is a state where I expect them to be well-prepared and make the cut if they have a quality winner.

FL-I was very impressed with Juliette. She is solid across the board, and FL is a state which has continued success. She is firmly in my top 10 based on her strong performance, solid competitive in all categories and the success of the state.

LA-It was a competitive pageant. I was personally rooting for Olivia George, I think she had more of a likeability and maturity than Makenzie. I can see why Makenzie won and like other states with much success, she will be well-prepared by the time she hits Miss America. Her talent is entertaining and of late, entertaining talent seems to be winning. Although with having one large talent group it is hard to say who will be standing out.

So, there you have it. What say you about the state winners this year? Who is your favorite? If you are from a state not mentioned here, please tell us about your state titleholder.

Here are my 19 and then other possibilities:

Angola, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Curacao, Guatemala, India, Mexico, Namibia, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Russia, USA, Venezuela.

I could also see making the cut: Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Ireland, Italy, Laos, Philippines, Singapore, Spain, or Thailand. I liked Egypt a lot in SS but her gown was awful.

That is such a tragic story and absolutely abhorrent. I know that anyone can raise a child that goes horribly off the path. But I just really have to wonder how deep the senior Haskell's problems go. All that illusion of a genteel Southern man is so far from reality. Senior Haskell went mercilessly after a young woman's life and acted in what might be considered a sociopathic way. He really set out to ruin her, manipulate the people around him. He relied on deception.

Really, I think after this that ANYONE who wants to credit him with "saving" the program needs to STFU about him ever again. Please put him on the ash heap where he belongs.

That was so dragged out, the hostesses seemed very uncomfortable and not natural at all. The outgoing Miss USA and that guy from the Bachelor (who was a villian by the way) sounded like they were reading from a teleprompter. And I only had TX and possibly PA in the top 5. I had the other 3 nowhere near that top 5. The winner looks entirely too surgical for my taste. She has beautiful eyes, I will give her that. But her veneers were so big they made her upper teeth stick out over her bottom teeth and they looked really fake. Some fake teeth at least do not look as bad as those. She kind of looks like what you would see at Miss Universe but not from the United States. They say she is Venezuelan, and she does seem to give off that vibe. I have no problems with her beauty, just what she did to enhance herself. She doesn't look natural and it takes away from her beauty.

I just feel like something was missing last night, it was so low energy and I didn't even care who won. That's never the case. It was about as bad as the MAO pageant this past year.

Mallory went through a hell of an ordeal. The only thing I thought of typing this out is that Sam might be demanding stuff right now. If we discuss this let's make sure not to say something that is going to get him riled up.

I am woefully behind on everything since the pageant ended, including a final night recap. And emails! I got some nice correspondence over pageant week and will get to them. But I did get a chance to watch the preliminaries and I think we will see a traditional powerhouse win this year. Some come across as very arrogant and thus, unlikeable for me. I didn't particularly care for the hair flipping. But here is the ones that stood out the most to me:

USA, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Dominican Republic, South Africa, Angola, Slovak Republic, Germany, Colombia, Curacao, Great Britain, India, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Bahrain, and Ukraine.

I think there is a strong possibility that the crown comes back to this part of the globe, somewhere in the Caribbean or Central America.

I will be watching and giving some commentary in this thread.

Happy Miss America day!

In CT, this is nowhere near the event that it used to be, it just seems to come and go quickly. But I have enjoyed these past few days. I have enjoyed pageant season being able to watch the contestants earlier this summer and now see them at Miss America. It’s always exciting, and what a lovely class of young women this year. Sometimes there are years where you think there will be a nightmare winner, but I think that this year everyone will be happy or satisfied with the winner. A lot of nice, thoughtful young women. I am anxious to know who it will be.

The following had a nice week but just didn’t stand out enough in each category that I anticipate seeing them in the top 10:
AK-I definitely don’t see a repeat for them, but Jessica is a lovely young woman. I appreciated the story she told about the Alaska sisterhood, it is wonderful that she gets to represent them.
AZ-She hasn’t been bad all week at all, I just don’t think she did enough to separate herself. I enjoyed her clogging, though.
CO-Had a weaker talent, so I do not anticipate her making the cut. She did well in gown, though, very pretty girl.
CT-I just didn’t think she stood out from the crowd enough, she was a bit subdued. But I really enjoyed her talent.
DE-This one pains me, she is absolutely sweet and adorable. I just don’t think she did enough competition wise. But she is such a wonderful young woman, I know the future is very bright for her.
DC-She did well enough in gown and sounded very intelligent, but I didn’t see that she did enough to stand out from among the crowd this week.
ID-I really enjoyed her, I enjoyed hearing about her teaching stories, and her talent was enjoyable. I know she has a bright future.
IL-I really liked her platform, and I think she’s a great young woman. She just didn’t stand out enough this week.
MT-She has done everything that she needed to do, but there are only so many slots open in the top 10. She made Montana proud, and I really enjoyed her this week.
NH-She is a really cute and sweet girl, great platform, and she seems very joyful. I didn’t think she stood out this week but she will do great things with her platform.
NJ-I really liked her answer onstage, and she seems very bubbly and natural. I just didn’t think she set herself apart from the competition.
NM-I liked her gown presentation and talent music. She didn’t really set herself apart from the crowd this week, but she seems like a lovely young woman.
NC-I really like her, and I know she’s got some serious pipes. She seems like a great young woman and she didn’t do poorly at all, just not enough to stand out.
WA-Like NC she didn’t do poorly at all, just not enough to set herself apart. I liked her gown presentation, and I really thought she did a great job answering her SII question.
VT-She is a fantastic speaker, but her talent was subpar. She looks like a young Mariska Hargitay and seems like a great young woman. She no doubt has a bright future.

The following I do not really expect to see but I wouldn’t be totally shocked if I did:
ME-You know I LOVE her. But Maine has a very hard time as a state cracking the top 10/15 at Miss America. The only thing I would say in her favor is that judges have been looking beyond the state in these last years and perhaps they will fall in love with her like many of us in the audience. She has something about her.
MO-I saw her win her state pageant, she is very pretty, a very pretty dancer. She is a bit laid back compared to some of the other contestants, and I think that is why we probably won’t see her. But the judges might find her charming.
ND-Since Cara’s win, the state has been on an upward trend. I really liked her all week, and she was one of my pleasant surprises. I don’t think we will see her but I think she did well enough that if she meshes with the judges, we might see her.
RI-I really liked her, her gown was beautiful. I think she didn’t quite do enough to stand out from some of the others but I think she did have something unique and likeable about her that might make the judges notice her.
TN-She should run to USA, she is a very pretty young woman and looks fantastic. Or Volunteer. Her talent wasn’t quite up to snuff and she didn’t do enough otherwise, but you never know.
UT-She was good enough and consistent, but probably not enough to stand out from some of the others who did better.
WY-I just think she seemed a bit inexperienced but she was absolutely adorable. I think she has a future in pageants and now there are two systems in which she could succeed. She is very likeable and genuine, I am thinking that she might sneak In if the judges like her.

The following I think are a possibility, not given. I could really see them going either way:
AL-This is a state with a very strong reputation. She is very much like the Miss AL last year where she had an entertaining and pleasing talent, good on onstage question. I don’t think she is as strong, though. Just based on state reputation, I cannot rule her out.
HI-She is one where I think if she connected with the judges could go far, if not, then we will likely not see her. Her talent was really one that I couldn’t figure out. It started out weak but she can definitely sing. She looked good in a gown and HI has a good state program overall. So, it’s hard to say.
KS-Her talent was very nice, I would say she was the strongest of the lyrical dancers this year. She does have a compelling personal story. It is all going to come down to how she connected with the judges.
KY-She has the personality of the pageant. It’s as if she got the genes of Chera Lyn Cook and Richard Simmons. She is very outgoing and very comfortable with herself, and also very intelligent. I have a feeling if the judges love her and are feeling her she could go a long way.
MI-I really can’t count her out. Her talent was entertaining enough, and she is a good, positive speaker. It’s going to be close, but I haven’t ruled her out.
MN-She was consistently good across the board this week. I found her to be well-spoken and she did stand out a bit. Again, it will come down to how she connected with the judges.
MS-She has also been one who has been consistently good across the board all week. She doesn’t completely jump out from the crowd, but she has been good enough to make the top 10.
OH-I am not sure about her. Sometimes I saw brilliance from her and sometimes she seemed a bit off. I think it will come down to her interview. She certainly has good talent and she looked good in a gown. I could see her going far or missing the top 10 completely. I just don’t know.
OR-She is really cute, and she has a lot of personality. Her talent was certainly good enough, and she always seemed enthusiastic. I am not certain she makes the top 10 but I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see her.
SD-She has been refreshing this week. Her talent was solid enough, she looked nice in a gown, and had something natural and refreshing about her. I would not be surprised to see her.
VA-This is a state with a stellar reputation who can bring out the most in their competitors. I think she is ready and had a consistent competition all week. It will just be about how she connected with the judges. I would not be surprised if we see her and I would not be surprised if we do not see her.
WV-This is another state with an uphill climb, but I haven’t ruled her out entirely. She is unique, managed to blend her platform in with her talent, and was very positive. I really enjoyed her this week.

The following are strong bets to end up in the top 10. While I realize there are only so many slots, I think these have the greatest chance of making it:
AR-Ebony has been good all week, I scored her high in each of her categories. Certainly consistent enough across the board, great state reputation. I think there is a good chance we see her in the 10 tonight.
IA-She is hit or miss for me, it just depends how the judges connected with her in interview. If she hadn’t won a preliminary I probably wouldn’t have her anywhere near the 10. Her talent was weaker, actually, and I am not sure that one category is enough to make her that consistent. But it still counts for something.
LA-She has been consistently good across the week, and it is a state with a great record at Miss America. Her talent was probably one of the stronger ones the first night, and that will count for something.
MA-Despite her poor talent showing, she oozes confidence and you definitely notice her. She may not win with that talent but I do think she has enough going for her that a top 10 is a distinct possibility.
NE-I have to hand it to the Miss Nebraska program. Ever since Teresa’s win they have been sending quality contestants to Miss America; this year is no exception. I thought she was very skilled at the baton and appreciated that she did a true dance rather than just a fast-paced baton act. She had a good story as well and I think she has a strong shot at the top 10.
NV-She has been consistent across the board this week, definitely one of the better talents in the pageant. She is a good, positive speaker, has a lot of good energy. I could see her doing very well tonight.
NY-The ONLY reason I have her in this category is state reputation alone. If she were from another state I would say no. But this is NY after all, and they know how to get it done year after year. There is just something off about her-kind of her demeanor, I didn’t think she could speak very well during the competitions. But you can’t discount a Miss NY.
OK-It’s funny, when I saw her state pageant I thought potentially top 5 at Miss America. That is entirely possible still. She looks fantastic in a gown and had to have done well in red carpet. Her talent wasn’t anything that blew you away but it was certainly sufficient.
PA-Above average in red carpet, good speaker, talent certainly is passable. She has a compelling personal story and she did well expressing herself. I think she is a strong possibility for the top 10.
SC-She was probably the best pop/non-classical vocalist in the whole pageant. She has a compelling personal story and did well in red carpet as well. It’s been a few years for SC but I think they might be back this year.

Now, to the few who are my sure things:
CA-Catherine has probably been the most consistent across the board of the non-winners. She is talented at the piano, looked good in a gown, and speaks very intelligently and confidently. I cannot imagine a top 10 without her.
FL-She is also one of the non-winners who I think pops out. She has a great stage presence, may have won her red carpet round and does well overall. Her talent isn’t as good as some of the other lyrical dancers but FL has a great record at Miss America, and I think Lindsey will continue that tradition.
GA-I thought she was a potential double winner but she had to have scored well. I think people will like her. She’s very humble and yet when she performs, she’s just a natural. Something comes alive in her. She reminds you of a Miss GA of old.
IN-With her having won preliminary talent she is definitely in the top 10. She presents herself well and seems like an overall total package. Her speaking extemporaneously seems a bit weak, but she is overall a strong candidate.
TX-There isn’t a year where Miss TX doesn’t make the cut, and I am sure this is no exception. Averie still has a lot of qualities that scream Miss America to me. While she might not have been winning every category she was still consistent. She still has a lot to like and I think the judges will see that.
WI-Preliminary talent win and she is highly intelligent. She definitely fits the mold of some of our previous winners and successful contestants where she is talented and brilliant at the same time.

So, who do I think is going to win?

This year it is really hard to say. What seemed to work in the past is not resonating this week. Usually classical talents (piano, opera) won preliminaries. As far as SII, that could go many different ways. So, it is very hard to say what the judges are looking for. I think this makes it fun rather than being so predictable. There were years when we knew who was going to win. The ones I am taking the closest look at are:
WI-She is talented and can talk nuclear energy with the best of them. I think she might be great to pull in some corporate sponsors, ones which might provide scholarships and some interest in the program where there is money to be had. I said the same about Camille but to be fair, she was during a COVID year and couldn’t do much. I don’t really see any weaknesses in her competition. She reminds me of Erin Andrews in looks and is tall and statuesque like her. There’s a lot to like.
GA-It’s funny because I didn’t have GA on my radar this year. It’s not that I don’t, because this is a tremendously successful state. With Victoria I did, although I did not know much about Kelsey. I think people would like her if she won, she would be popular. I do like that quality about her that she is humble and yet just goes out and does her thing very well.
As far as the non-preliminary winners, it’s really hard to say. I think CA has been the most consistent but does she have the Miss America qualities they are looking for? And what are they looking for this year? Trying to bring attention to the program almost seems moot. They can’t really pick a winner for what they are looking for. I love Emma and we barely heard a word about her. So, trying to strategically pick a winner is not really much of a factor.

I would say Georgia based on her consistency throughout the competition, state success, and her seemingly kind personality, but I just don’t know.

Now I am off to a Christmas party! We aren’t having the best weather here where I am and we all have an agreement that we are going to end early. So I might be around an hour behind on commentary but I will comment as I start to watch and go along. BEST OF LUCK to all of the lovely ladies, and I can’t wait to meet our new Miss America! THANK YOU to all of you who have been reading and commenting all week.

Talk to you all soon enough!
