Subject: ABOUT THE MOVE TO PEACOCK

I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, at least we are going with the trends. Streaming services are here to stay, and popular sports like football are going onto streaming services. It is nice to actually be with the trend than against it or waiting until it is well beyond time to transition. Some of the Olympics were streamed on Peacock this summer.

On the flip side, NBC is running a repeat of a made for TV movie in the time it would have broadcast the pageant. Not exactly a vote of confidence, although with less than 3 million viewers for the 2019 broadcast it was likely destined to the television scrap heap. IF the pageant was being simulcast on Peacock as well as on NBC this probably would have been a minor win, but the ratings may have slipped even further.

To me, this is the death knell of the pageant. It was in 2019 with the changes. But, this is the first we are off of traditional television. And sorry, but streaming services are still different than television. Even though it is the way that cinema and entertainment is headed, the fact that the pageant is not being broadcast is huge. If you read Frank DeFord's book, he predicted that one day the pageant would be on UHF, which was a term for cable back in the days that he wrote the book (mid 1970s.) He was correct about it leaving network TV, around 40 plus years later. I think at this time, even being on a TLC or CMT type network would be moral victory. Maybe it will work on Peacock, but they are also having revenue problems and are not popular outside of your Comcast subscription. If you wanted to set your DVR to record the pageant you are out of luck. If the pageant was on Netflix or Hulu, that would actually be a better service. They are much more popular and more subscribers could be reached.

At the end of the day, the 2019 pageant was the last we will ever see on traditional television. And that is a huge sign that the program is in peril. Not that there are not others but when you lose the thing that makes your organization visible, it is a sign that the end is near. If Peacock does not get the results they want from this, it may not even be an option next year.

This is a long time coming, sadly, but the day is here. This very well could be the last pageant. Hilary Levey Friedman predicted that Miss America would always continue on if even in a ballroom, and that's just about where it is right now. But I am not even sure about that anymore. Too many things are happening.
