This photo was published on 16th July, three days before the final night. Miss New York, Sanita Pelkey (left), 21, and Miss Iceland, Bryndis Schram (right), 19, exchange smiles – despite their troubles – at the Miss Universe 1957 Beauty Pageant in Long Beach yesterday. Miss New York’s father died Saturday in the Bronx, New York, but she is staying in the contest in accordance with his wishes. Miss Iceland reports that, through mixup, she doesn’t yet have a return ticket home.
