This photo was published on 22nd July 1959, two days before the final night. Miss Hawaii, Patricia Visser (left), congratulates Miss Nevada, Joy Blaine (right), when she was selected among the 15 semifinalists for the title of Miss U.S.A., the first act of the judges in choosing Miss Universe 1959. Both young women are the only divorced women among this year's candidates. This fact is not an obstacle, according to the pageant rules, and the odds were 7 to 1 that one of them would triumph as Miss U.S.A. In the decisive moment last night, however, Miss California, 19-year-old Terry Lynn Huntingdon, bested her 14 competitors.
