This photo was published on 22nd July 1959, two days before the final night. These three South American beauties read about themselves in a local newspaper.

The trio, resting during rehearsals for last night’s opening of Miss Universe 1959 beauty pageant, are left to right, Miss Bolivia, Corina Taborga; Miss Uruguay, Claudia Bernat; and Miss Brazil, Vera Ribeiro. International sympathies were witnessed after last night’s selection of finalists for Miss U.S.A.

Miss Illinois, Arlene Kay, was consoled by her roommate, Miss Japan, Akiko Kojima.

A list of 46 American contestants was pared to 15 finalists, including Miss Missouri, Barbara Jayne Stell, which will be cut to one Miss U.S.A. tonight.
