This photo was published on 25th July 1959, one day after the final night. From left to right. Miss Universe 1959, Miss Japan, Akiko Kojima; the first runner-up, Miss Norway, Jorunn Kristjansen; and the second runner-up, Miss U.S.A., Terry Lynn Huntingdon. The other two contestants who were in the Top 5, but are not in this picture were: the third runner-up, Miss England, Pamela Anne Searle; and the fourth runner-up, Miss Brazil, Vera Ribeiro.

Akiko is the first Asian girl to win the crown in the eight-year history of Miss Universe.

The new Miss Universe is tall for her nationality – 5 feet 6 inches. She weighs 120 pounds.
