Miss Universe 1959. Photo 80.
This photo was published on 24th July 1959, the day of the final night. A new Miss Universe was crowned late tonight, and everyone will be asking her how it feels to win.
But what about the losers? For an inside view on how it feels to miss out on the big prize, I talked with Miss Denmark, Evy Norlund (left), who participated in Miss Universe 1958 and was in the Top 15 when Miss Colombia, Luz Marina Zuluaga (right) was chosen Miss Universe 1958. She lost, but she won.
Her appearance at the fate drew attention from Columbia Pictures. She won a contract and now has a good chance to upset the jinx against film fame for beauty contest winners.
The future for Evy looks rosy now, but she admitted that the outlook was black a year ago.
“I was chosen as one of the 15 semifinalists”, she recalled, “and then I was eliminated. I had exactly $1 left of my expense money. Yes, I had a plane ticket home, but I wanted to stay in America.”
Did she come here with hopes of winning?
“Yes, I felt I had a faint chance,” she said. “I think every girl comes here with that idea. But after a while, you realise you are not going to win, and you become resigned to it.”
“I knew that Miss Colombia was going to win last year. You can see the politics going on behind the scenes.’ She is a nice girl, Miss Colombia, but I don’t think she should have been the winner. Everyone agreed that Miss Holland was the most outstanding girl.”
Evy acted as hostess for the contestants in Miss Universe 1959 and got a chance to see them all. Whom does a loser pick for the winner? “Miss France is the most attractive girl.” Evy said, “She should win. But she may not. Politics, you know.”
