Based on how I have learned English and how I teach it currently, I'd say the great idea that underlies teching as a whole, considering discourse level, has to do with the way teachers see the role of discourse as part of the syllabus. In order words, the fact is: not all teacher are familiar with this approach. For some of the ones who consider it, it would be a detail or possibilities a language offers. So, discourse is only considered if it is, tied to irony or joke as we see in cartoons, or as being extremely intentional. To teach the essense of discourse, it must be presented in all and each item the students are presented, since the very beginning. On the contrary isn't it the same way Portuguese do when teaching "concordăncia" and "regęncia" always in a hurry in the last semester of High School and never give itmuch explanation? That is exactly how it feels to me...
