It's clear that the journalist was biased against the organization and against pageant girls. And while I have no doubt that the year is exhausting, Betty is Miss America. That's her job. Whine and complain to your friends or family, but not to a journalist. She gave the journalist exactly what she wanted and every pageant girl who wants to be taken seriously, who would love the opportunity to be Miss America, ought to be a little aggravated with Betty. There are any number of qualified women who probably would have enjoyed the opportunity instead-Hannah Roberts, Kelley Johnson, April Nelson and Meg McGuffin come to mind. Betty's comments were made without giving thought to how they impacted anyone else, and that's just not acceptable when you're Miss America being interviewed by a journalist. -- ILLINOIS Pageants Board

I was especially offended for the people who were in the parade with Betty, who may have walked away with a different impression of the experience and their interaction with her, and now they know what she really thought of them. Maybe parades aren't as personally rewarding or interesting as being at CMN hospitals or speaking in schools, but one's interests don't negate her responsibility to leave a positive impression on people wherever she is as part of the job she actively and competitively sought. It's been well-established how grueling it is to be Miss America for a year, as well as how taxing it can be for a state titleholder. In 2015, no one should have gone into it uninformed or unprepared. Why work so hard to get a job you don't really want? To me, Betty's frivolous, self-indulgent comments just validate what those who know her have said all along about her character and maturity level. It's too bad, too, because I really liked her.
