What is defamation, libel and slander?
Whether you are the victim of internet defamation or being wrongfully accused of internet defamation, you need to understand the law. In order for a comment, post or article to constitute internet libel, the following elements must typically be met:

The first thing you must prove is that the statement constitutes a false statement of fact. A fact is different than an opinion. A fact can be proven true or false. Opinions are typically not actionable as defamation. The false statement of fact must harm your reputation. There are many false statements posted across the internet. In order to constitute libel, a statement must not only be false but must harm you or your company’s reputation and cause harm.

The false statement of fact causing harm must be made without adequate due diligence or research into the truthfulness of the statement. Alternatively, plaintiffs often attempt to prove that the false statement of fact was made with full knowledge of its falsity.

If the person who is the subject of the false statement of fact is a celebrity or public official, the plaintiff must also prove “malice.” Malice is proven when the person posting the information on the internet intended to do harm or acted with reckless disregard of the truth in making the statements.

There is often confusion about the differences between defamation, libel and slander. In many ways, courts treat defamation on the internet similar to off-line defamation. But there are differences which you need to understand when the false statements are made on-line.

Defamation: An unprivileged false statement of fact which tends to harm the reputation of a person or company. This is a catch-all term for both libel and slander.

Libel: Defamation which is written such as on a web site. Most on-line defamation occurs through libel by posting a web page, comment, bulletin board post, review, rating or blog post.

Slander: Defamation that is spoken such as through an transcribed video, podcast or audio file.

If that were true for IL America, then the 2009 queen would not have won, and would have her photo on their website's wall of fame. Anji Meidel I believe was her name. What is Ms. Illinois America? The founder of LOLC keeps posting she is Ms. Illinois America 2018. I tried to find this pageant but I can't seem to locate it. My daughter is interested in doing more pageants and when I saw her posting, I was wondering what it was....anyone heard of it?

When looking at this feed I truly agree that it shows all the negative sides of pageantry and proves the negative stigma reflected on pageantry. But as a father of someone who has competed in her pageants before, I see this feed as many people who experienced and feel the same way my family does. These posts are clearly coming from people who have either tried to confront Lovena or report her and were unsuccessful. I do agree that some of these posts can be refined to stray away from foul language, but I do believe that it is important to share with the community the actions and comments Lovena Hunter has made throughout her time in pageantry. Coming from our personal experience, Lovena targeted my daughter for her weight as well as well as shared many inappropriate comments about her personal life with her.

My daughter has witnessed her be untruthful with money in regards to the pageant, and when my daughter confronted her on the matter she became short and ignored the question. My daughter has watched her steal, lie, and make fun of other girls as well as other directors within the pageant industry.

One of the most disheartening things that my daughter shared with me and my wife was that she witnessed her trying to give certain girls competing in her pageant an upper hand and favorited certain girls. So much to the point that my daughter over heard her give side comments to the judges about certain girls.

I was saddened to see the recent events happening at the current pageant she is running. When me and my family went to go watch her current pageant held in August, it was clear that she has not changed one bit over the years. The pageant was poorly put together and we never heard her once on stage recognize her titleholders for that year and only heard her talk about the amazing things she has done. At one point right before a crowning ceremony of someone with special needs she announced on stage "I want to get out of her so we are going to try to speed up this pageant". The pageant was 5 hours long.

One of the most concerning things was her attire the night of the pageant, in which she wore a very tight and short dress on a high up stage which we found extremely inappropriate. I share this publicly with hopes that those of you who have experienced the same thing will go forward to the organization she currently runs with hopes that she will no longer be able be a part of pageantry and affect young women in such a negative manner.

For many years, the Guru Moderator quickly deletes any voice of dissension against MAO leadership. Guru has state favorites as well.

A few posts on this website are truly bringing out the worst in people. I bet you can tell which ones I am talking about. It is truly sad because I feel the posts are making their authors seem like much worse people than they actually are, which is usually the case with anonymous websites such as this one. Many people have said things along the lines of "This is something I would say to her face", and if that is true, then post your name. Let people know who you are if you aren't ashamed of the speech you are putting out there. It is one thing to post your experience with someone, it is another thing to ACTIVELY try to slander someone's name, and then attack the people who have had positive experiences with that person.

I am NOT saying everyone has to agree with one another, and of course I am sure people would want to know of negative and positive experiences with certain systems or people involved, but you can do that without being HATEFUL. We all learned how to express ourselves respectfully in elementary school.

I tell my daughters "How you talk about other people says much more about you than it does about them."

TO REITERATE: I am just asking everyone to be more mindful about how you speak. Don't be hateful. It makes the pageant community in its entirety look bad.

I did some checking and have confirmed that Lovena Hunter is NOT taking over Illinois International pageants. She is NOT even on staff for this coming year. While she may support various systems around the state, she is not in charge and will not be helping direct Illinois International. Hope this eases some concerns.

I am the original poster of this thread. I am very familiar with the situation. VERY. I hate to see someone (who I do not know) getting trashed because of ASSumptions. Beverly was the director of IL Intl for a few years. Her forced departure from the system has been a long time coming. As someone who is part of the effort to get the state international system on track, I can tell you Lovena has been kind enough to suggest ladies enter Illinois International. My take-away from this is that the current "director" is out and that a new one is on her way in. I, like you, would like to see good things from this once great state pageant. According to the complaint Derrick was asked not once but twice to fill out the paperwork so they could get it approved and he refused. It also states that he never intended for the hospital to be the ultimate benefactor. That he had always intended to use the money to personally benefit by lining his pockets. Looks like she worked for "Standard Satellite", she sued many people for breach of contract through small claims and won. What EXACTLY is the problem with that? Out of 24 law suits that she was Plaintiff in for that company (which for those who aren't legal minded - she brought suit) she won 14 of them. LOLC is a platform to help send Sherrie and whomever she chooses as her new sidekick on international vacations. If your pockets do not appear deep enough, she wants nothing to do with you. They do have confirmation that they have had events and have spoke at schools but that only happens a few times a year. The rest of the money goes to a person, Sherri who expects you to pay to model for her but she will not model for free.

My experience with this pageant system has been awful. I submitted my first fee of $99 for my 5 year to receive a state finalist title in June 2016. I had heard nothing from the system so I attempted to contact a person who works for the system. The system claims that they did know where the funds went. I finally received my daughters crown in September. I didn't receive information or a handbook until December. The crown was broken when I received it and they would not replace it. So, I dealt with it and payed a registration fee and deposit of $304 for my daughter to compete for a state title. There was no pageant and the director stated that my daughter will be crowned and advancing to nationals. There was an unexpected death in my family in which I had to use my daughter's pageant funds for. I conveyed my unfortunate situation to this Christian pageant system and received no compassion or a bit of understanding. It was all about money for them and the director even mentioned how she will pursue legal actions to get my daughter's crown and sash back that she didn't even receive yet. It was as if my daughter had to pay for her tile and it wasn't earned. Because I couldn't pay to go to the next pageant, they refused my 5 year old her title that she supposedly had earned, not even when I explained the unexpected death in the family. This system also refused to refund me the $304 for the title that they refused to give to my daughter. The way they dealt with me and my situation was not Christian like and they are money hungry and could care less about a person or their situation.

I know of friends who love PURE however I also have talked to several others who have stories very similar to yours. I personally don't care for the 'give everyone who goes to state a title to lock everyone into nationals' types of pageants but some people like it. My opinion.. Titleholders pay for their wardrobe and travel expenses locally during the local reign. Then when they go to state, some are fortunate to have a wardrobe allowance but not near enough to cover what is required during the week. By the time you add up all expenses for what a 500 to 1,000 scholarship? Most state gowns cost this! So don't let them compete in another MAO pageant (not to mention, in a state with lots of closed pageants) after they have spend thousands of dollars to compete not to mention raised the required CMN money each time. But as a father of someone who has competed in her pageants before, I see this feed as many people who experienced and feel the same way my family does. These posts are clearly coming from people who have either tried to confront Lovena or report her and were unsuccessful. I do agree that some of these posts can be refined to stray away from foul language, but I do believe that it is important to share with the community the actions and comments Lovena Hunter has made throughout her time in pageantry. Coming from our personal experience, Lovena targeted my daughter for her weight as well as well as shared many inappropriate comments about her personal life with her. My daughter has witnessed her be untruthful with money in regards to the pageant, and when my daughter confronted her on the matter she became short and ignored the question. My daughter has watched her steal, lie, and make fun of other girls as well as other directors within the pageant industry. One of the most disheartening things that my daughter shared with me and my wife was that she witnessed her trying to give certain girls competing in her pageant an upper hand and favorited certain girls. So much to the point that my daughter over heard her give side comments to the judges about certain girls. I was saddened to see the recent events happening at the current pageant she is running. When me and my family went to go watch her current pageant held in August, it was clear that she has not changed one bit over the years. The pageant was poorly put together and we never heard her once on stage recognize her titleholders for that year and only heard her talk about the amazing things she has done. At one point right before a crowning ceremony of someone with special needs she announced on stage "I want to get out of her so we are going to try to speed up this pageant". The pageant was 5 hours long. One of the most concerning things was her attire the night of the pageant, in which she wore a very tight and short dress on a high up stage which we found extremely inappropriate. I share this publicly with hopes that those of you who have experienced the same thing will go forward to the organization she currently runs with hopes that she will no longer be able be a part of pageantry and affect young women in such a negative manner.

It is truly sad because I feel the posts are making their authors seem like much worse people than they actually are, which is usually the case with anonymous websites such as this one. Many people have said things along the lines of "This is something I would say to her face", and if that is true, then post your name. Let people know who you are if you aren't ashamed of the speech you are putting out there. It is one thing to post your experience with someone, it is another thing to ACTIVELY try to slander someone's name, and then attack the people who have had positive experiences with that person. I am NOT saying everyone has to agree with one another, and of course I am sure people would want to know of negative and positive experiences with certain systems or people involved, but you can do that without being HATEFUL. We all learned how to express ourselves respectfully in elementary school. I tell my daughters "How you talk about other people says much more about you than it does about them." TO REITERATE: I am just asking everyone to be more mindful about how you speak. Don't be hateful. It makes the pageant community in its entirety look bad.
