What is defamation, libel and slander?
Whether you are the victim of internet defamation or being wrongfully accused of internet defamation, you need to understand the law. In order for a comment, post or article to constitute internet libel, the following elements must typically be met:

The first thing you must prove is that the statement constitutes a false statement of fact. A fact is different than an opinion. A fact can be proven true or false. Opinions are typically not actionable as defamation. The false statement of fact must harm your reputation. There are many false statements posted across the internet. In order to constitute libel, a statement must not only be false but must harm you or your company’s reputation and cause harm.

The false statement of fact causing harm must be made without adequate due diligence or research into the truthfulness of the statement. Alternatively, plaintiffs often attempt to prove that the false statement of fact was made with full knowledge of its falsity.

If the person who is the subject of the false statement of fact is a celebrity or public official, the plaintiff must also prove “malice.” Malice is proven when the person posting the information on the internet intended to do harm or acted with reckless disregard of the truth in making the statements.

There is often confusion about the differences between defamation, libel and slander. In many ways, courts treat defamation on the internet similar to off-line defamation. But there are differences which you need to understand when the false statements are made on-line.

Defamation: An unprivileged false statement of fact which tends to harm the reputation of a person or company. This is a catch-all term for both libel and slander.

Libel: Defamation which is written such as on a web site. Most on-line defamation occurs through libel by posting a web page, comment, bulletin board post, review, rating or blog post.

Slander: Defamation that is spoken such as through an transcribed video, podcast or audio file.

The miss United States pageant is in a court battle right now due to the national pageant being fixed supposedly. No one including Derrick Lee is supposed to be promoting the pageant under a court injunction yet Derrick believes he's above the law. DO NOT give him any money toward any pageant. I applaud everyone for making sure people know the real Derrick Lee. Obviously the national office saw through his lies. Over 10 complaints from different people. He only had 30 people compete. I competed at Miss Illinois United States. My entry fee was $300.00 and we paid for our opening number dresses which were $125. The other expenses were optional. Derrick didn't require you to get hair & makeup, photogtaphy or video. Coaching was optional and I received a $500 gift certificate towards my gown from Hannah's. You mean the coach and sponsor that traveled back and forth to Chicago to help girls prepare for state and nationals and didn't make a dime. The same lady that had no obligation to lend dresses to your queens for their photoshoots and showed up with a car full of dresses so that you could have an input in the creative process. I contacted the new national director on Facebook her name is Stephi Barton Williams she was very helpful and helped me dispute my transaction in PayPal to get my money back from him! I asked about the future of the Miss United States Pageant and she told me the future is bright and they got rid of the bad apples within the organization and they are taking applications for new directors in several states. Most of which are in the Midwest. I would so apply but I want to compete but her email address is director@unitedstatesnationalpageants.com. What I would suggest is contacting the Attorney General's office. When Derrick takes in entry fees without an executed contract as a director that is fraud. He needs to be stopped from doing this to other potential systems/contestants. They have already opened an investigation into the fundraiser for Lurie's hospital. No idea. Her interview outfit - the red looked great on her, but the top of the dress and zipper I didn't care for. However, it DID show off her incredible figure. Her evening gown showed off her amazing figure as well. I didn't like the crisscross top part and thought the bottom ruffles were excessive and distracting. I also wasn't a fan of the color. Would have loved it if it were that color but in a satin material or if it had been that same material but in a more vibrant blue. I think she would have also looked incredible in an emerald green. Then again, she's gorgeous and could pull off practically any color. Her swimsuit did her no favors. Don't get me wrong. She still looked AMAZING. But it covered way too much of her upper body. She has incredible abs, and only about 3/4 of her abs showed. I thought her talent outfit was very fun. Yes. Check on the Miss Il. USA website. They have student rates at $10. I think you can also buy them through the ISU website and also right at the Braden Auditorium . Subject: Are people using coaches still? I know Miss America is against it, but if you are a newbie, how do you compete unless you have a coach to tell you how to walk, interview, your talent, etc? It seems like if a pageant is against using a coach, then it is definitely helping the more experienced girls, rather than encouraging the newbies. That is not fair. Jaryn has done, and will continue to do, an awesome job representing our state. She has gotten a lot of attention at the national level so far and stands an excellent chance of doing well in AC. Wouldn't it be nice if the IL MAO board wasn't silent when there were positive things to say? My mom always said, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." Good advice, but it seems like many in this organization believe the opposite: "If you can't say anything crappy, don't say anything at all." Or at least, "if you can't say anything crappy, try harder." Jaryn needs at least as much support from us as she's getting from the rest of the MAO organization. Please take some time to say something nice. And if you can't, feel free not to say anything at all.

Her interview outfit - the red looked great on her, but the top of the dress and zipper I didn't care for. However, it DID show off her incredible figure. Her evening gown showed off her amazing figure as well. I didn't like the crisscross top part and thought the bottom ruffles were excessive and distracting. I also wasn't a fan of the color. Would have loved it if it were that color but in a satin material or if it had been that same material but in a more vibrant blue. I think she would have also looked incredible in an emerald green. Then again, she's gorgeous and could pull off practically any color. Her swimsuit did her no favors. Don't get me wrong. She still looked AMAZING. But it covered way too much of her upper body. She has incredible abs, and only about 3/4 of her abs showed. I thought her talent outfit was very fun. Either way, super excited for her because it looked like she had fun and I can't wait to see what she does as Miss IL for the rest of her year. Why? I think it's great that all pageants in Illinois are included on here. Contestants try different pageants all the time and I think it's a good thing for everyone to be able to find more about each pageant system.
