What is defamation, libel and slander?
Whether you are the victim of internet defamation or being wrongfully accused of internet defamation, you need to understand the law. In order for a comment, post or article to constitute internet libel, the following elements must typically be met:

The first thing you must prove is that the statement constitutes a false statement of fact. A fact is different than an opinion. A fact can be proven true or false. Opinions are typically not actionable as defamation. The false statement of fact must harm your reputation. There are many false statements posted across the internet. In order to constitute libel, a statement must not only be false but must harm you or your company’s reputation and cause harm.

The false statement of fact causing harm must be made without adequate due diligence or research into the truthfulness of the statement. Alternatively, plaintiffs often attempt to prove that the false statement of fact was made with full knowledge of its falsity.

If the person who is the subject of the false statement of fact is a celebrity or public official, the plaintiff must also prove “malice.” Malice is proven when the person posting the information on the internet intended to do harm or acted with reckless disregard of the truth in making the statements.

There is often confusion about the differences between defamation, libel and slander. In many ways, courts treat defamation on the internet similar to off-line defamation. But there are differences which you need to understand when the false statements are made on-line.

Defamation: An unprivileged false statement of fact which tends to harm the reputation of a person or company. This is a catch-all term for both libel and slander.

Libel: Defamation which is written such as on a web site. Most on-line defamation occurs through libel by posting a web page, comment, bulletin board post, review, rating or blog post.

Slander: Defamation that is spoken such as through an transcribed video, podcast or audio file.

With so many changes, I wondered if Scott B was kept on. He seemed to do a fair job of stage production. From what I've heard, not a good or supportive director, but was close with AS, so his shortcomings didn't matter. I hope he is back, he's kinda sexy...that huge smile!

Susan has been involved with pageants for many years; she began her career competing in local pageants across Western Kentucky, she eventually won the title of Miss Kentucky USA. I have been a fan of the Miss Illinois system for years and I have noticed quite a change this year. Are the numbers down this year? I think Ashley is doing a fantastic job as director but how are locals this year??

Just wanted to put this out there... If anyone is looking for a pageant coach for an IL pageant, contact Nikki Huber. She definitely knows what she is doing and seriously helped me! She helped me with walking, stage presence, wardrobe and gave me some health and fitness tips. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for an amazing coach!

Well unfortunately pageant coaching doesn't work that way. Ladies spend big bucks for coaches and I hire coaches for my daughter based on the coaches past success whether it's the coach themselves or their clients winning track records. I don't know this coach personally, she may be nice, great and fantastic but there are a lot of coaches in IL that have quite a great resume when it comes to their own experience. Every one Ashley is using are the same people AS used. All the money that was raised is going to new org. Bringing in all the people AS had for years only shows that Ashley had no connections whatsoever of her own.

Too bad Ashley does not have a clue how to run things.

I hope MAO gets wind of this nonsense. Not fair to anyone and stop blaming AS for every dang thing. It's very apparent she herself does not know how to recruit Contestants!

This post is so full of misinformation, it exhausts me to think of trying to correct it all. My only guess, again, is that you are someone (probably associated with AS, or AS herself) who finds themselves on the outside of the program, speculating about what is going on inside. It must be exhausting, keeping your nose pressed up against that window and still knowing so little. Let me just remind you that Ashley did not take AS's position. AS was fired. Every single sponsor is from the old group, not one new one. Production Team is exactly the same, Security, Hostesses, and more. She even brought back Shuey, Hannah and Zac her husband. Well, if you're referring to Hannah (because you lack the testicular fortitude to say it outright), she was no longer a board member when Amalia was fired. But let's just set that argument aside for a second, Hannah is a former. She's not going anywhere. Additionally, she's doing choreography for the state pageant. She is more than appropriate for that role. Now, back to her role in AS's regime, Hannah was very young and should never have accepted a board position. But, more importantly, the adult who was running the program should never have asked her. Further, said adult fostered an unhealthy relationship with Hannah at a pivotal time in her life. I think some grace could be extended to Hannah for being young and impressionable. Ultimately, if you find it difficult to do that, your attempts to intimidate or exclude her make you no better than Amalia herself. KF is not out, she's assisting with CMN so get your facts straight. Whether Hannah wants to admit it or not, she needs to tell the truth herself. The relationship between all these people is too complicated to discuss here and really none of our business. I'm not disputing that Hannah and Megan benefited from their association, but I do believe it came at a price to both. I have been a fan of MAO for several years, but I can say that I witnessed something I have never seen before. In my opinion, this is the biggest piece of unfair bs I have ever heard of.

Tonight, the local for Miss Central Illinois/Springfield/Prairie State was held. They were going to award three Miss titles and just one Outstanding Teen title (as there were only four teen contestants).

So, the three Miss crowns were announced as well as the one teen winner (plus a teen 1st RU). Then, during the after party held just outside the pageant auditorium, the director decides to announce that she is actually awarding a second teen title. But, she gives this title to one of the girls who was not even the teen 1st RU. A few minutes after that, the director decides to hand out a third crown to the teen who actually finished 1st RU.

So, the director awards three crowns and leaves the only other contestant with nothing. I do not understand how this was even allowed, especially since Ashley Hatfield (the new state director for Illinois) was there in attendance. I am not even directly affected by this, but I am sure pissed about it. What do you all think?

Farewell videos are to be played at the end of the pageant. After the judging is complete so that the judges don't see current contestants as a previous titleholder. The videos were mistakenly played before the competition area of the pageant, in front of the judges, showing Amelia in crown and sash. Wouldn't the judges already know Amelia was a previous titleholder? They would have read that on her resume. Numerous other contestants likely also placed on their resumes that they were previous titleholders or contestants, and how well they have done in other competitions. While there might not be an official rule on this, it is in poor taste to give any contestant more attention in front of the judges than another. Playing a farewell video of a contestant that is also an outgoing titleholder before judging is complete would be within the realm of poor taste. As a general rule in pageantry, if you think it might look bad or create drama, just don't do it. There will always be people that complain about things, but this appearance of impropriety could have been avoided with a little common sense. I fully agree with what you're saying, but I guess I'm confused about the complaint. Neither Adrien's, nor Amelia's videos were played prior to judging be completed, but a number of girls could have been in any of those videos. I think what's being taken out of the equation is the integrity of the judges. At this point, they already know each contestant's background and have interviewed the contestants as well. To worry that this one thing will influence the judging in any significant way implies that you can't trust the judges' ability to judge. I don't think the judges' integrity is in question; and the state organization has measures to prevent the local directors from influencing the outcome. I actually don't have a complaint about the outcome. I was not there. I was just making a comment about the appearance of impropriety that a seasoned local director should have realized. I didn't see the pageant and have no opinions on the outcome either way. Having seen Amelia at state, I have no doubt that she did well this weekend. No one wonders why the numbers are low. The numbers are expected to be low as the program recovers from the abuse of the previous group. I think it may be you who has no clue. The reason Amelia is eligible is because Miss Springfield is closed. She only competed for Miss Springfield, and this is because she was ineligible for Miss Central Illinois, as the previous titleholder. She had to relinquish that title in order to compete, which she did. At the local director's meeting, the rules were addressed regarding a titleholder being allowed to compete in the same pageant, but for a different title. It was read straight from the licensing agreement. The Field Directors and the Local Directors know the rules MAO has set forth. I don't know this family, but maybe they couldn't afford to "purchase" their daughter a title, not to mention that purchasing a title shouldn't really be what this program is about in the first place. For goodness sake people, if you put this effort in helping to make the system better Illinois would be unstoppable. If anyone was really in this for the girls, as I truly believe Ashley is, you would be pulling together instead of still pulling each person apart. What a great example adults are sending to the young ladies.

What a sad turnout for this pageant. Nothing like it used to be. There was no rhyme or reason to the way things were done. It was like hurry up and get the teen done and move along to the Miss. In all my years of being around pageants, I have NEVER seen anything like this before. They made a hue mistake taking away pre-teen and even the little one.

One of the reasons cited for Amalia's group losing their MAO license was the running of unsanctioned pre-teen pageants. They are not allowed, so that's why Southern Illinois didn't have one. The state program is decent. However, be prepared that if your daughter wins she has to attend nationals and it's very very expensive. Nothing is provided for you. Ad pages are mandatory. It's a week long event in VA so add in airfare,hotel and food for a week. That doesn't even cover wardrobe, hair and makeup and optional competitions. It's very competitive and they like them pretty! IJM might not be as prestigious as Miss America or Miss USA, but it is top of the line for pageants that can help prepare your daughter to get to the big stage. IJM is great but it's not for first timers unless you hire a good coach. It's very competitive. The state is not as glitzy as nationals. Their national pageant is very glam and like mentioned above you better have deep pockets $. This is entirely untrue. Being a contestant that was not local, not even knowing who the judges were, and meeting the director once prior, I WON a title. Not from knowing people, but from working hard and COMPETING for it. I then made Top 10 at internationals. If they're in Marion, it's probably because a settlement has been reached and they didn't want to wait on the mail to get their check. Very interesting read. After seeing many things happen in the pageant world I am glad to see someone do the right thing. My only question is, Why allow someone involved with contestants be allowed to judge in the first place? Models of sponsors or students should not be allowed to compete if the sponsor is involved in that year. It just does not look good for the organization. Subject: I completed my first pageant because I needed to bring awareness to my cause, anti-bullying. And here, pageant people are bullying. All I can say is that as a community you can disagree with people and even not like people but dont bash, this is completely unnecessary. The thread is about a trusted man, a director, a coach who made mistakes. He didn't learn from them in the Belleza system, no one spoke up to protect people he took advantage of so he was free to do it again, this time taking advantage of girls, their causes, their parents who don't have extra money to just give away, and from children. The money he stole was to benefit the children's hospital to help parents be able to stay with their sick children. This is a time to come together and stand up for what is right. Shane on you if you don't. Take pride in your title, in your system, in yourself. Or with 4 systems under investigation in Illinois right now, there won't be any left.

A big part of the problem in this organization is that, like you, some people forget the money belongs to the program for the benefit of the girls who participate in it. IF Ashley's group receives a dollar, it will not be "hers," but rather it will go to support a scholarship program for young women; you might have heard of it. MAO prep planned this whole thing. Problem was the contract was between Marion and ISA. With Mao trying to terminate the contract after the state pageant still left contract in good standing. That said, the money held by the City of Marion was supposed to be for the program, and Amalia no longer held the rights to the program. You got what you wanted. New regime, wonderful. But is it? Ashley has used everyone that was previously in place. All who volunteered for the old group. At least AS started a whole new team, all new sponsors.

Ashley is Not doing anything earth shattering. Numbers are way down, so give it a chance.

Marion should never have kept the money, whether MAO told them to or not.

Right now, all is wonderful bc their Queen is in Southern IL. Let's see how it works for Ashley when someone wins up North.

Not an AS proponent by any means but just by what I see. Nothing has changed much. The people volunteering are the same that volunteered for old group. So, the jury is still out.

Ashley obviously thought enough that the people who did work with them were a wise choice.

In my opinion, this is the biggest piece of unfair bs I have ever heard of. Tonight, the local for Miss Central Illinois/Springfield/Prairie State was held. They were going to award three Miss titles and just one Outstanding Teen title (as there were only four teen contestants). So, the three Miss crowns were announced as well as the one teen winner (plus a teen 1st RU). Then, during the after party held just outside the pageant auditorium, the director decides to announce that she is actually awarding a second teen title. But, she gives this title to one of the girls who was not even the teen 1st RU. A few minutes after that, the director decides to hand out a third crown to the teen who actually finished 1st RU. So, the director awards three crowns and leaves the only other contestant with nothing. I do not understand how this was even allowed, especially since Ashley Hatfield (the new state director for Illinois) was there in attendance. I am not even directly affected by this, but I am sure pissed about it. What do you all think?

The state program is decent. However, be prepared that if your daughter wins she has to attend nationals and it's very very expensive. Nothing is provided for you. Ad pages are mandatory. It's a week long event in VA so add in airfare,hotel and food for a week. That doesn't even cover wardrobe, hair and makeup and optional competitions. It's very competitive and they like them pretty! Subject: I completed my first pageant because I needed to bring awareness to my cause, anti-bullying. And here, pageant people are bullying. All I can say is that as a community you can disagree with people and even not like people but dont bash, this is completely unnecessary. The thread is about a trusted man, a director, a coach who made mistakes. He didn't learn from them in the Belleza system, no one spoke up to protect people he took advantage of so he was free to do it again, this time taking advantage of girls, their causes, their parents who don't have extra money to just give away, and from children. The money he stole was to benefit the children's hospital to help parents be able to stay with their sick children. This is a time to come together and stand up for what is right. Shane on you if you don't. Take pride in your title, in your system, in yourself. Or with 4 systems under investigation in Illinois right now, there won't be any left.

All who volunteered for the old group. At least AS started a whole new team, all new sponsors. Ashley is Not doing anything earth shattering. Numbers are way down, so give it a chance. Marion should never have kept the money, whether MAO told them to or not. Right now, all is wonderful bc their Queen is in Southern IL. Let's see how it works for Ashley when someone wins up North. Not an AS proponent by any means but just by what I see. Nothing has changed much. The people volunteering are the same that volunteered for old group. So, the jury is still out. Ashley obviously thought enough that the people who did work with them were a wise choice.

You say you want to drop it, but I'm assuming you meant you want to spew your opinion without anyone responding. That's not how things work when you're a grown-up. As far as I can tell, Ashley's group appears to have inherited a program that has been abused and run into the ground by an organization that was more corrupt than anyone could have even imagined. While she doesn't need me to defend her, Ashley has handled this with dedication and professionalism, taking on the task of rebuilding a program practically from the ground up, dealing with the mess left in Amalia's wake, all while attempting to diplomatically sort the people with their own personal agendas from the people who volunteered because they genuinely cared about the program.
